When fire meets fire… only the one who knows when to smile survives.
The side road leading to the edge of the Oregon forest was empty.
Ian Vale drove steadily.
He knew this road well.
Better than those following him.
He saw the taillights in the mirror.
One vehicle.
Then another.
He didn't flee.
Didn't accelerate.
He continued.
Near the remains of his old home
He stopped.
Killed the engine.
Stepped out slowly.
Took two steps forward.
Suddenly
A powerful floodlight exploded in his face.
He raised his right hand to shield his eyes.
In his left
A small case.
Footsteps moved between the trees.
Five men emerged.
Four unmistakably security.
The fifth stepped forward calmly.
Marcus Heller.
He entered half the circle of light.
Studied the young man before him.
Reading glasses.
Thick hair.
The look of a diligent graduate student.
A faint smile touched his lips.
"You're different than I expected."
Ian hesitated slightly, voice measured.
"Don't come closer… or the case burns."
Heller stopped.
Raised an eyebrow.
"No… I won't come closer."
Then added coolly,
"You'll hand it to me."
From the treeline
Two figures emerged.
Jack Harper.
Margaret Harper.
Bound.
Exhausted.
But alive.
Ian's eyes hardened.
"Where's Emmy?"
Heller took a slow step forward.
"One step at a time."
Ian's voice sharpened.
"I don't release the case until they're free."
Heller smiled.
"Did you think tonight was about following your terms?"
A pause.
"What about what we want?"
Ian answered steadily,
"You get the case after everyone walks."
Heller moved closer.
"Right now I have these two."
He gestured to Jack and Margaret.
"As for the girl… I won't need her once I confirm what you're carrying."
Silence thickened.
Then Ian said:
"Fine."
Heller's curiosity sharpened.
"They leave in my car."
Ian pointed behind him.
"I stay. Until Emmy is released and you verify the contents."
Heller exchanged a glance with one of his men.
"Agreed."
His men stepped forward.
Unbound Jack and Margaret.
They rushed toward Ian.
Held him tightly.
Cried.
Jack whispered, voice breaking,
"Don't do this…"
Margaret murmured,
"Save Emmy…"
Ian wrapped his arms around them.
Spoke with unsettling calm.
"Get in the car."
He held Jack's gaze.
"Follow the route on the screen."
"Even if it changes."
Margaret hesitated.
"Even if it changes."
Jack nodded.
They got in.
The vehicle pulled away slowly.
Inside, the navigation screen lit up.
The route shifted.
Turned.
Looped.
Shortened.
Minutes later
Two vehicles emerged from opposite sides.
Intercepted them.
Men in civilian clothing.
Calm.
Efficient.
They extracted Jack and Margaret.
Transferred them to another car.
A third driver took their original vehicle and continued down the road.
Moments later
Three black SUVs began pursuing the decoy.
Jack understood.
The route had never been random.
It was design.
Back in the forest
Ian entered Heller's vehicle.
Door closed.
Engines moved.
Heller stared ahead.
"You have potential," he said evenly.
"If you choose correctly."
Ian remained silent for a moment.
Then replied:
"There must be a compelling offer if you expect cooperation."
Heller smiled faintly.
"You may be smarter than your father."
Ian didn't respond.
He looked out the window.
Trees passing rapidly.
Road swallowing them.
Inside him
There was no panic.
Only another layer of the plan.
Still unseen.
And the convoy
Drove toward the facilities.
