Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: A Student of Amaterasu

Three years had passed since Damon began his training with Amaterasu, a journey marked by growth and challenges. They spent those years in a serene clearing surrounded by lush greenery, where the warmth of the sun kissed the earth and nature resonated with their every movement. Each day flowed with a mix of excitement, rigorous training, and reflection until Damon's body could barely take any more.

Throughout these years, Amaterasu taught him various stances and postures crucial for mastering swordsmanship—techniques like Chudan-no-Kamae, Jodan-no-Kamae, and Gedan-no-Kamae. As they practiced, Amaterasu emphasized how each posture was essential for achieving balance and combat power.

They transitioned into learning Grip Techniques, where Amaterasu explained that having a proper grip was vital for maintaining control and effectiveness in battle. "For example, the Seiza grip serves as the foundation for many other techniques," she instructed, demonstrating the precise positioning of fingers.

Next, they moved on to footwork, where movements like Koshi Ashi and Tachi-Ai were critical for enhancing agility and maneuvers. Amaterasu stressed the significance of learning to execute cuts with precision—cuts like 'Men,' 'Kote,' and 'Do' were vital for delivering accurate strikes in a fight.

Finally, they delved into the philosophy of swordsmanship and the mind, where discipline, respect, and practice emerged as fundamental traits for mastering the art of the sword. With each lesson, Damon absorbed the teachings quickly, his determination shining brightly. He seldom complained and often felt invigorated by the challenges presented to him, much to Amaterasu's delight.

With diligent effort and beads of sweat glistening on his brow, Damon eventually developed his own style focused on inflicting damage and swiftly dealing with adversaries using powerful cuts. He also learned to deflect attacks strategically, turning enemies' strength against them.

As time progressed, Amaterasu found herself increasingly impressed by the capabilities of Damon's sword, which at first glance appeared to be an ordinary divine katana. However, there was something extraordinary about his weapon—it absorbed energy from existence itself, harnessed within the striking red gem on the hilt. Over time, this mesmerizing ability began to transmit energy to Damon, enhancing his skills in ways he could scarcely understand. Amaterasu observed it with intrigue; it was the first katana she had seen exhibit such unique qualities.

As the days turned into weeks, Damon learned to harness this power to his advantage, gradually becoming stronger with each training session. Amaterasu calculated that if he continued on this path, it wouldn't be long before he would surpass her in power and skill.

Recognizing this potential, Amaterasu began to teach Damon how to control his power, emphasizing the importance of focusing his energy and compressing it so that it wouldn't drain him too swiftly. This didn't particularly concern her, as she had come to realize that Damon was practically a reservoir of energy and resilience—he didn't seem to tire like many others did.

"Many gods neglect to learn how to manage their power," Amaterasu explained one day, her tone reflective. "They often believe that raw strength is enough. But knowing how to control that power is the key to true mastery. Without it, chaos reigns, and that uncontrolled power will eventually dominate you."

Damon, already the type of god who relished training, faced no objections to practicing his abilities. Each week brought transformation; through sweat and relentless practice, the fluidity of his movements deepened. Eventually, he began to seamlessly integrate the katana's energy into each strike, achieving a profound harmony with the blade.

During breaks for meals, Damon took every opportunity to ask Amaterasu about her pantheon, his curiosity insatiable. "What are the yōkai like?" he inquired excitedly, eager to absorb her knowledge.

Amaterasu, seeing no harm in sharing insights, spoke warmly about yōkai like the kyūbi and other supernatural beings that inhabited her world. As she described each entity, her eyes sparkled with a mix of pride and nostalgia.

On one particular afternoon, she mentioned Yamata-no-Orochi, a colossal serpent with nine heads. "It's not stronger than the gods in raw power," she explained, her voice firm yet contemplative, "but it possesses something even more formidable—immortality. Its ability to endure is a challenge that even the strongest have yet to conquer."

Damon listened with rapt attention, his fascination growing with each tale.

However, Amaterasu's demeanor shifted whenever humans were brought into the discussion. She spoke of them quietly, as if burdened by a weariness that went far beyond physical fatigue.

"Humans," she said softly, her voice steady, "are always hungry." She paused, reflecting on the balance between the yōkai and the human realm before continuing. "Aside from the yōkai and the human world, we also bear the responsibility of another realm called the chakra realm."

"In that realm," she explained, "humans who can harness chakra achieve remarkable things. Yet the world has changed; with the very power gifted to them to bring peace, they now find themselves waging war against one another, sowing chaos where harmony once thrived."

Sadness tinged her words as she recounted how clans had been feuding for centuries, children forced into battle against each other, even as young as four years old.

Despite her attempts to intervene, Amaterasu found it hopeless—her efforts to settle rivalries with words rather than weapons met repeated failure. Each time she quelled one conflict, two new ones would raise their heads, a never-ending cycle that gnawed at her spirit.

Damon felt the weight of Amaterasu's struggles seep into his very being. He understood without her needing to articulate it; the burden of her responsibilities weighed heavily upon her. Yet, he chose not to press the issue further, feeling it was a dangerous topic to explore. Instead, he pivoted to lighter subjects, and they spent the afternoon discussing how different the Shinto pantheon was in comparison to the Greek one.

Especially the architecture, which piqued Damon's interest; he couldn't help but admire how beautiful and intricate the dojos were.

As their training progressed, Damon found himself recognizing Amaterasu not just as a mentor but as a companion. By the end of each day, he could no longer deny the special place she held in his heart, particularly for the guidance she offered in helping him control his katana without asking for anything in return.
