Chapter 24 - Phase Two

The city did not sleep that night.

Emergency sirens echoed endlessly, helicopters circled above, and every screen across the district replayed the same footage, a fractured sky opening for exactly thirty-two seconds before sealing again.

No explanation.

No answers.

Only fear.

Arjun sat on the rooftop of the academy infirmary, knees drawn slightly inward, watching the horizon where the fracture had appeared hours ago.

The sky looked innocent now.

Too innocent.

Mira stepped onto the rooftop quietly, carrying two cups of warm tea. She handed one to him without speaking.

He accepted it.

Hands still shaking slightly.

You disappeared for a moment, she said.

Arjun nodded.

I wasn't here.

Where were you?

He searched for words and failed.

Somewhere… before reality decides things.

Mira didn't fully understand, but she didn't push. She had learned that forcing answers from Arjun only made them slip further away.

Wind passed gently between them.

Below, the academy buzzed with investigation teams and council officials.

Kael appeared moments later, closing the rooftop door behind him.

You're officially a classified problem now.

Arjun raised an eyebrow slightly.

That sounds serious.

It is. The council thinks you triggered the event.

Figures.

Kael leaned against the wall.

Sensors recorded the anomaly locking onto a single biological signal. Yours.

Mira frowned.

So they blame him?

They fear what they don't control, Kael replied.

Silence settled again.

Then Arjun spoke.

It called itself a Witness.

Kael straightened.

You communicated with it?

Not exactly. It… understood me.

Arjun stared into his tea.

It said I survived deletion.

Mira's fingers tightened around her cup.

Deletion from what?

Before Arjun could answer, the rooftop lights flickered once.

All three of them froze.

A familiar cold presence filled the air.

Lyra stood near the edge of the roof, looking down at the city lights.

Phase Two has begun, she said calmly.

Kael groaned softly.

She does that entrance thing on purpose, doesn't she?

Lyra ignored him.

The Observer confirmed anomaly persistence.

Arjun stood.

Meaning?

Meaning reality failed to erase you once. Now it must decide what to do instead.

Mira looked confused.

Reality… decides?

Lyra turned toward them.

Worlds operate on correction. Errors are removed to maintain stability.

Her silver eyes rested on Arjun.

But you remained.

Kael crossed his arms.

So what happens to an error that refuses to disappear?

Lyra answered without emotion.

It becomes a threat.

A deep vibration suddenly passed through the air again, weaker than before but unmistakable.

Not from the sky this time.

From below.

The rooftop floor cracked slightly beneath their feet.

Arjun felt a sharp pain behind his eyes. Images forced themselves into his mind.

Underground tunnels.

Ancient symbols.

Something awakening beneath the city.

He grabbed his head.

It's under us.

Mira stepped closer.

What is?

Arjun looked toward the academy grounds.

Something woke up when the Observer came.

Lyra nodded.

Correction systems activate locally first.

Kael's expression darkened.

You're telling me there's another thing down there?

Not another, Lyra said softly.

A guardian.

The ground trembled harder.

Far below the academy, something massive shifted after centuries of silence.

Stone cracked.

Seals broke.

And deep beneath layers of forgotten structure, a single eye opened in darkness.

On the rooftop, Arjun exhaled slowly.

So Phase Two isn't about watching anymore.

Lyra's gaze softened slightly.

No.

It is about judgment.

The academy lights suddenly went out across the entire campus.

Darkness swallowed everything.

And from beneath the earth, a low ancient roar echoed upward, shaking the city to its core.
