Chapter 37 - Chapter Thirty-SevenThe Fall of the Tower

The detonator clicked.

Across the city, time seemed to pause.

Inside the De Luca estate war room, every eye remained fixed on the blinking timer that had just reached zero.

Elena's fingers tightened around Alessandro's hand.

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then the monitors erupted with static.

Adrian leaned forward.

"What the hell…?"

The camera feed from the council tower suddenly flickered back to life.

And then—

The ground shook.

The Explosion

Deep beneath the council tower, a violent shockwave tore through the foundation.

Steel beams twisted like paper.

Concrete cracked open with a thunderous roar.

The underground parking structure collapsed first.

Then the central support columns shattered one after another.

On the surveillance feed, the massive glass tower trembled.

Office lights flickered wildly across its countless floors.

Adrian whispered,

"Oh no…"

Outside the building, pedestrians stopped in the street, staring upward as the skyscraper groaned.

Then—

The entire tower began to fall.

Glass shattered outward in a massive wave.

Steel supports snapped like bones.

And the heart of the mafia council came crashing down.

The sound of the collapse echoed across the entire city like thunder.

Dust and debris exploded into the air as the structure crumbled into itself.

Within seconds, the once powerful council headquarters had become nothing more than a mountain of rubble.

Silence in the War Room

Back at the estate, no one spoke.

The monitors showed the aftermath.

Smoke rising.

Sirens wailing across the city.

Helicopters already circling above the ruins.

Adrian slowly leaned back in his chair.

"…that just happened."

Elena stared at the screen in horror.

Hundreds of lives had just ended in an instant.

And the city would never be the same again.

She turned slowly toward Valentina.

"You killed them."

Valentina didn't respond.

Her eyes remained locked on the footage.

Then she whispered quietly,

"No."

Elena frowned.

"What?"

Valentina pointed to the screen.

"Look again."

The Missing Man

The cameras zoomed in on the wreckage.

Emergency crews rushed toward the destroyed tower.

But one thing was immediately clear.

There were no armored vehicles in the underground structure.

No convoy.

No sign of Orlov.

Adrian noticed it too.

"He's not there."

Valentina nodded slowly.

"He left before the detonation."

Elena's heart sank.

"He planned it."

Alessandro's voice was cold.

"Yes."

He turned toward Valentina.

"You built the bomb."

"Yes."

"And he used it."

"Yes."

Adrian exhaled.

"So the council is dead…"

"…and Orlov just removed every rival he had."

The realization settled heavily in the room.

Orlov hadn't just escaped.

He had just wiped out the entire leadership of the mafia council.

And inherited their empire in the process.

The Ruthless Truth

Elena looked toward Alessandro.

"What happens now?"

His answer came quietly.

"Now the war begins."

Adrian blinked.

"That wasn't already a war?"

Alessandro's eyes darkened.

"No."

"That was the opening move."

Valentina finally turned away from the monitors.

"For him… yes."

Elena stared at her sister.

"You didn't see this coming?"

Valentina hesitated.

For the first time since the night began, she looked uncertain.

"No."

Adrian folded his arms.

"Well that's comforting."

The City Reacts

Across the city, sirens screamed through the streets.

Police units flooded toward the collapsed tower.

Firefighters fought massive fires burning through the wreckage.

News helicopters circled overhead, broadcasting the destruction live.

Within minutes, every television screen across the country carried the same breaking headline.

MASSIVE EXPLOSION DESTROYS CITY SKYSCRAPER

But no one outside the underworld knew the truth.

The tower hadn't been just another building.

It had been the throne room of the mafia.

And now it was gone.

The Real Game

Inside a dark penthouse overlooking the smoking ruins, Viktor Orlov watched the live broadcast calmly.

A glass of whiskey rested in his hand.

Behind him, several armed guards stood silently.

One of his lieutenants approached.

"The council is confirmed dead."

Orlov nodded.

"And De Luca?"

"Still alive."

Orlov smiled faintly.

"Good."

The lieutenant frowned.

"Good?"

"Yes."

Orlov took a slow sip of his drink.

"Because now he has nothing left to hide behind."

He turned toward the massive window.

The burning skyline reflected in the glass.

"This city only has room for one king."

A Dangerous Alliance

Back at the estate, Elena sat quietly at the table.

The weight of the night pressed heavily on her chest.

Hundreds had died.

Her sister had built the bomb.

Orlov had used it.

And Alessandro was preparing for another war.

She finally looked up at him.

"You're not going to stop."

"No."

"Even after all this?"

Alessandro met her gaze.

"Especially after this."

Elena swallowed.

"And what about us?"

The question hung in the air.

Adrian pretended to study one of the monitors.

Valentina remained silent.

Alessandro walked closer to Elena.

His voice softened slightly.

"This war was coming long before you met me."

Elena looked down at the table.

"I know."

"But now you're part of it."

She nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Alessandro tilted her chin up gently so she had to meet his eyes.

"And I will burn this entire city before I let anyone take you from me."

The quiet promise in his voice sent a shiver through her.

Danger.

Possession.

Protection.

All wrapped together in one man.

The New Enemy

Suddenly, Adrian's computer beeped again.

"Uh… guys."

Everyone looked toward him.

Adrian stared at the screen with wide eyes.

"You might want to see this."

He turned the monitor toward them.

A message had just appeared across their secure network.

Only three words.

CHECKMATE, DE LUCA

Below the message was a video file.

Valentina clicked it open.

The screen filled with a dark room.

And a familiar face tied to a chair.

Elena gasped.

Because the person on the screen wasn't Valentina.

It wasn't a council member.

It was someone far more dangerous.

Someone Elena had thought was long gone.

A man slowly lifted his head toward the camera.

And smiled.
