Chapter 19 - Chapter Nineteen:The Warning

Lina

Rain follows me all the way home.

By the time I reach my building, the sidewalks shine under the streetlights and the air smells like wet pavement and cold metal. The city feels quieter than usual, like everything has slowed down just enough to notice the space between sounds.

I climb the stairs to the third floor, my mind still replaying the conversation from earlier.

Someone's asking questions about you.

Victor sent someone to check on me.

That thought should make me angry.

Instead, it makes my chest feel strangely tight.

Inside the apartment, I drop my bag on the couch and kick off my shoes. The radiator knocks once like it always does, complaining about the cold.

Everything is exactly the same.

But something inside me feels slightly unsettled now.

I walk to the kitchen and pour a glass of water, staring out the window while the rain continues falling softly against the glass.

Victor promised not to chase me.

He kept that promise.

So why does it feel like his world is suddenly creeping closer again?

My phone buzzes on the table.

I glance down.

Unknown number.

Again.

For a moment, I consider ignoring it.

But curiosity wins.

"Hello?"

The voice on the other end is calm.

Too calm.

"Miss Moreno."

My grip tightens around the phone.

"You again?"

"I apologize for the intrusion," he says. "But I believe you deserve a warning."

"A warning about what?"

"About the people asking about you."

A chill moves through my stomach.

"I already know someone's asking questions."

"You don't understand the kind of people asking them."

Silence stretches between us.

"What do they want?" I ask.

"Victor Hale."

My heart stutters slightly.

"What does that have to do with me?"

A short pause.

Then the man says something that makes the room feel colder.

"Everything."

I lean against the counter.

"I don't work for him anymore."

"That doesn't matter."

"Then explain it."

His voice lowers slightly.

"People like Victor Hale don't have weaknesses."

I already know where this is going.

"But if they did," he continues, "those weaknesses would look exactly like you."

The line goes silent.

He hangs up before I can respond.

I stand there staring at the phone long after the call ends.

The radiator knocks again behind me.

Outside, the rain keeps falling.

For the first time since leaving Victor's world, I feel something familiar pressing against the edges of my new life.

Danger.

Victor

Marco doesn't bother knocking.

He walks straight into my office and drops a folder onto the desk.

"We have a problem."

I close the document I'm reviewing.

"That's rarely new information."

"Not this kind."

I open the folder.

Inside are several printed photographs.

My stomach tightens immediately.

Lina.

Walking down the street near her apartment.

Standing outside the consulting office.

Carrying groceries through the front door of her building.

Someone has been watching her.

Closely.

My voice becomes very quiet.

"Where did these come from?"

"Intercepted them this morning."

"From who?"

Marco exhales slowly.

"That's the problem."

He taps the edge of one photo.

"They've been circulating through three different channels."

My eyes narrow.

"Corporate?"

"No."

"Political?"

"No."

I look up at him.

"Then who?"

Marco hesitates.

Then he says the one name I hoped not to hear.

"Elena."

The room goes completely still.

"That's impossible," I say.

"Is it?"

"Elena wouldn't target Lina."

Marco raises an eyebrow.

"Victor… you know Elena better than anyone."

Yes.

I do.

Which is exactly why the idea makes my chest tighten.

Elena doesn't lose control.

She eliminates problems.

I stand and walk to the window overlooking the city.

"You're certain?" I ask.

"Not completely."

"But close."

Behind me, Marco leans against the desk.

"She's been meeting with several board members recently."

"That doesn't prove anything."

"It proves timing."

My mind begins assembling the pieces.

The board's sudden pressure.

The rumors spreading again.

Now someone watching Lina.

It's too coordinated to be coincidence.

"Why now?" I ask quietly.

Marco's answer is immediate.

"Because you changed."

I turn slightly.

"What does that mean?"

"You let Lina walk away," he says.

"People noticed."

"And?"

"And powerful men aren't supposed to choose love over control."

The words sit heavily in the air.

Marco continues.

"Elena built her entire worldview around power."

"Yes."

"So when she saw you break that rule…"

He shrugs.

"She probably decided to remind you why it exists."

My hands tighten against the window frame.

"She's using Lina."

"That's the theory."

Rage moves slowly through my chest.

Cold.

Precise.

Dangerous.

Marco watches me carefully.

"You're thinking about going after her."

"I'm thinking about ending this."

"That would start a war."

"It already has."

He studies my expression.

"You promised Lina you wouldn't drag her back into your world."

I remember that promise clearly.

But looking at those photographs…

Someone already has.

"That promise was meant to protect her," I say quietly.

Marco nods.

"And if protecting her now means breaking it?"

I stare down at the city lights below.

 Cars moving through the streets.

Thousands of lives continuing normally.

Unaware that wars between powerful people rarely stay contained.

"If Elena thinks Lina is a weakness…"

I turn back toward him.

"…then she's about to learn something important."

Marco folds his arms.

"What's that?"

My voice stays calm.

Cold.

Certain.

"That I don't lose the things I love."

Silence fills the room.

Then Marco nods slowly.

"Well," he says.

"Looks like the quiet part of the story is officially over."

Outside the window, thunder rolls somewhere in the distance.

And for the first time since Lina Moreno walked away from my life…

I'm preparing to fight for her.
