Dan gazed with unwavering intensity at the glowing spheres of fire and the swirling liquid water floating directly before him, suspended in the air without any physical support. A sphere of orange-red flame radiated intense heat, while a ball of translucent blue water remained fluid yet perfectly spherical.
He had truly mastered the use of the fundamental elements, and he did so without a single complex Hand Sign—the very tools the Shinobi of the future would rely upon. No gestures. No specific hand movements. No sequences. Only intent, will, and understanding.
The element manifested, shaped itself, and obeyed.
This was because Dan's path of power diverged radically from the path of the future Shinobi. If one were to compare his method with theirs, the difference was both clear and profound. Dan acquired this elemental mastery through an exhaustive, scientific, and radical comprehension of Chakra itself—its basic nature, its internal mechanisms, and the laws governing its transformation. He understood the "why" and the "how" at a foundational level, allowing him to shape it directly through his will.
Future Shinobi, conversely, would use the elements through fixed, memorized templates—the Hand Signs. These were specific sequences and precise movements that triggered a technique. Most of them would not truly understand how the process worked; they only knew that it did.
To provide a clear analogy: it was the difference between the scientist who invented a complex device and the end-user. Both can operate the machine and achieve results. However, the scientist understands every minute detail, every circuit, and every physical principle behind the design. Thus, the scientist can modify, improve, and innovate new uses for it. The user, however, is limited by the manual, pressing buttons and following instructions within a confined framework.
For decades, Dan had been somewhat frustrated by the lack of clarity regarding how Nature Transformation truly functioned. How does neutral, formless Chakra transform into actual scorching fire or liquid water? What is the physical law? Why are Hand Signs so vital?
He finally obtained these answers during his recent, intensive research into the complexities of Spiritual Energy—specifically the role of consciousness and how it shapes and directs energy. As is established, Chakra consists of two primary components: Physical Energy and Spiritual Energy. His discovery allowed him to understand that these two parts play distinct, functional roles in the formation of Ninjutsu.
Spiritual Energy acts as the "brain" of the Chakra—the commander and the architect. It carries the intent, the consciousness, and the visualization. it decides what must happen: Fire or water? Strong or weak? A sphere or a spear? All of this is programmed by the Spiritual Energy. It is the directive force.
Physical Energy, on the other hand, is the "body"—the executor and the raw fuel. It carries out the commands issued by the Spiritual Energy. It is the gasoline necessary for the engine, the raw material that is molded and transformed according to the orders received.
The reason Spiritual Energy holds the mantle of command is simple: it carries a literal fragment of the user's consciousness. It is not neutral energy; it is conscious energy. Physical Energy is neutral and inert, requiring direction.
This realization made the entire system of power vastly more transparent for Dan. Chakra was not merely a simple energy source, but a dual system of commander and executor—mind and body. True mastery comes from controlling this system by dominating the spiritual aspect through will and intent. Dan could use the elements without signs because he possessed the cognitive power to command the spiritual side directly. Ordinary Shinobi required Hand Signs as a "crutch" or a linguistic bridge to translate their desires into commands that the Spiritual Energy could understand. The signs act as pre-set templates, a substitute for profound understanding.
Yet, this new comprehension brought him to the threshold of even more daunting mysteries. Every answer birthed ten new questions.
The first major inquiry: If Spiritual Energy carries a fragment of consciousness, then where exactly is the soul?
This was a philosophical and existential puzzle. From his memories of the original story of this world, he knew that souls and resurrections were tangible realities. The Edo Tensei summoned the souls of the deceased. Souls migrated to an "afterlife" after the cessation of the body. Did this mean the physical vessel was merely a temporary carrier? A ship? A house?
But where was it located?
Dan knew his own body with surgical precision—cell by cell, molecule by molecule. Yet, he had never found anything resembling a "soul" as a physical or even a distinct energetic entity. He could see the effect of his consciousness—how his intent moved energy—but where did the soul reside? In the brain? The heart? Was it diffused throughout the entire anatomy? It remained elusive, hidden beyond the reach of ordinary physics.
The second major question concerned the mechanics of the elements themselves. How was formless energy converted into physical matter like water or fire? Was it a literal transformation of energy into matter, a creation from nothingness, or perhaps a summoning from another dimension?
These questions had occupied his thoughts for a long time. Fortunately, he had begun to secure some convincing answers—not yet the full picture, but a promising start.
