Volume 2: Chapter 17 – The Girl Who Wasn't Seen
---
[Scene: Unknown Location - 10 Years Ago]
(A small apartment. Dim. Quiet. A girl sits by the window. She's seven years old. Long dark hair. Big eyes. Watching the world outside.)
Young Girl: (whispering) "They don't see me. They never see me."
(Her mother enters. Tired. Worried.)
Mother: "Akari, come away from the window."
(The girl's name is Akari. Akari Tachibana.)
Young Akari: "Mommy, why don't people see me?"
Mother: (kneeling) "What do you mean, sweetie?"
Young Akari: "At school, the teachers look past me. The kids play without me. Even when I talk, they don't hear."
Mother: (holding her) "You're special, Akari. Different. One day, someone will see you. Really see you."
Young Akari: "When?"
Mother: "I don't know. But I promise, they will."
---
[Flashback: The Park - Same Year]
(Akari sits alone in the sandbox. Building small castles. Watching other children play.)
Young Akari: (thinking) "They're all laughing. Having fun. Why can't I be like them?"
(Then she sees him. A boy her age. Sitting alone too. Reading a book.)
Young Akari: (thinking) "He's alone too. Like me."
(She watches him. He doesn't notice her. But she notices him.)
Young Akari: (thinking) "His name is Kenta. I heard someone call him. He's always reading. Always alone."
(She wants to approach. But she's scared. Rejection. Invisibility.)
---
[Flashback: The Sandbox - The First Meeting]
(One day, he looks up. Sees her watching.)
Young Kenta: "Are you going to build with us?"
Young Akari: (heart stopping) "Can I?"
Young Kenta: "There's room."
(She moves closer. Heart pounding. For the first time, someone sees her.)
Young Akari: (thinking) "He sees me. He actually sees me."
(They build together. Sui and Yui join. Four children. Laughing. Playing.)
Young Akari: (thinking) "This is happiness. This is what it feels like."
---
[Flashback: The Flower]
(She picks a white lily from the edge of the park.)
Young Akari: (holding it out) "For you, Kenta-kun."
Young Kenta: (taking it) "Why?"
Young Akari: "Because you're kind. You let me play. You didn't ignore me like the others."
Young Kenta: (confused) "You're nice. Why would anyone ignore you?"
Young Akari: (sad smile) "They don't see me. Most people don't."
Young Kenta: "I see you."
Young Akari: (eyes glistening) "I know. That's why you're special."
(She leans forward. Kisses his cheek. Soft. Sweet.)
Young Kenta: (freezing) (ears red)
Young Akari: (standing) "I have to go now."
Young Kenta: "Will you come back tomorrow?"
Young Akari: (turning, smiling) "If you remember me, I will."
(She walks away. Disappears.)
---
[Flashback: That Night - Danger]
(Her father bursts through the door. Pale. Shaking.)
Father: "We have to leave. Now."
Mother: "What? Why?!"
Father: "They found us. They're coming."
Young Akari: (scared) "Who, Daddy?"
Father: (kneeling) "Akari, listen to me. We have to go. Tonight. We can't say goodbye to anyone."
Young Akari: (crying) "But Kenta-kun! I promised I'd see him tomorrow!"
Father: (holding her) "I'm sorry, baby. But we have to disappear. For your safety."
Young Akari: "Why?! What did we do?!"
Father: (quietly) "Nothing. That's the problem. They don't want us to exist."
(They leave that night. No goodbye. No trace.)
---
[Flashback: The Journey - Years Passing]
(They move from city to city. Never staying long. Always looking over their shoulders.)
Akari Age 8: (writing in a diary) "I miss Kenta-kun. I hope he remembers me."
Akari Age 9: "New school. New faces. No one sees me."
Akari Age 10: "I tried to draw his face today. It's fuzzy. I'm scared I'll forget him."
Akari Age 11: "Dad says we're safe now. But I still feel invisible."
Akari Age 12: "I dream about the sandbox. About the flower. About his red ears."
Akari Age 13: "I wonder if he's okay. If he's happy. If he ever thinks of me."
---
[Scene: Present - Akari's Apartment]
(She's 17 now. Sitting by another window. Staring at another sky.)
Akari: (whispering) "Ten years. I've been running for ten years."
(Her room is small. Sparse. But one wall is covered. Drawings. Photos. All of the same boy. Drawn from memory.)
Akari: (touching one) "Kenta-kun. I never forgot you. Did you forget me?"
(She looks at an old photo. The kindergarten class. Her name scratched out. Her father did that. To protect her.)
Akari: (thinking) "I'm invisible again. Like before. But this time, I chose it."
---
[Scene: The Beach - 3 Weeks Ago]
(She sits alone on the shore. Watching the waves. Hugging her knees.)
Akari: (thinking) "Dad said we're safe now. The danger passed. But I don't know how to be seen anymore."
(Then she sees him. In the distance. On the beach. With two girls.)
Akari: (heart stopping) "Kenta..."
(She watches. He's laughing. Smiling. Holding their hands.)
Akari: (thinking) "He's happy. He found people who see him. He doesn't need me."
(She stands. Starts to leave. Then he turns. Looks in her direction.)
Akari: (freezing) "Does he see me? Can he?"
(Their eyes almost meet. Then the girls call him. He looks away. She disappears into the crowd.)
Akari: (crying, walking away) "You're happy. That's enough. I don't need to be seen."
---
[Scene: Present - Akari's Room - Night]
(She lies in bed. Staring at the ceiling.)
Akari: (thinking) "I saw him. After ten years. He's real. He's alive. He's happy."
(She touches her cheek. Where she kissed him so long ago.)
Akari: (whispering) "Do you remember, Kenta-kun? Do you remember the girl who gave you a flower?"
(No answer. Just silence.)
Akari: (closing her eyes) "I see you, Kenta-kun. Even if you don't see me."
---
[Scene: The Next Morning - Watching]
(She stands at a distance. Near his school. Watching.)
Akari: (thinking) "He walks with them every morning. Sui and Yui. They never leave his side."
(She watches him laugh. Watches them kiss his cheeks. Watches him smile.)
Akari: (thinking) "He's loved. He's not alone anymore. That's all I ever wanted for him."
(She turns to leave. Then stops.)
Akari: (thinking) "But I'm still alone. Still invisible. Still running."
(She walks away. Disappears into the crowd.)
---
[Scene: Akari's Room - The Wall of Memories]
(She sits before her wall. Dozens of drawings. All of Kenta. From memory. From imagination.)
Akari: (touching one) "I've drawn you a thousand times. But I've never been able to draw myself."
(She picks up a pencil. Tries to draw her own face. Can't.)
Akari: (frustrated) "I don't know what I look like anymore. No one sees me enough to reflect back."
(She puts the pencil down. Hugs her knees.)
Akari: (whispering) "Kenta-kun... if you saw me... would you remember? Would you care?"
---
[Scene: The Decision]
(Her phone buzzes. A message from her father.)
Father: "Akari, the danger is truly over. You don't have to hide anymore. You can live. Really live."
Akari: (staring at the message) "Live? How?"
(She looks at her wall. At Kenta's face. At the beach memory.)
Akari: (thinking) "Maybe... maybe I don't have to be invisible anymore."
(She stands. Walks to the window. Looks toward the city. Toward him.)
Akari: (quietly) "Kenta-kun... I'm still here. I've always been here. If you're looking for me... I'm waiting."
(The wind blows. The curtains move. Somewhere in the city, Kenta touches his chest. Feels something. Doesn't know why.)
Akari: (smiling softly) "See you soon. Maybe."
---
[Scene: Kenta's Room - Same Moment]
(Kenta sits at his desk. Nineteen treasures before him. He touches his chest.)
Kenta: (thinking) "Strange. For a moment, I felt... warm. Like someone was thinking of me."
(He looks at the scratched-out photo. At his father's journals.)
Kenta: (whispering) "Are you out there? Are you thinking of me?"
(No answer. But the astrolabe gleams.)
---
[Scene: Akari's Room - Night]
(She adds a new drawing to her wall. Herself. For the first time. Standing beside Kenta.)
Akari: (looking at it) "One day. Maybe."
(She lies in bed. Stares at the ceiling.)
Akari: (thinking, last thought) "I see you, Kenta-kun. I've always seen you. When you're ready... I'll be here."
(She closes her eyes. Hopeful. For the first time in ten years.)
Akari: (whispering) "See you soon."
