Chapter 17: A Terrible Day for Rain
The sky over the cemetery was clear and blue, the kind of perfect autumn day that felt almost cruel in its brightness. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves on the trees lining the rows of graves, carrying the faint scent of chrysanthemums and freshly turned earth. The funeral for Toru Hagakure was small but heavy with the presence of two full classes—1-A and 1-B—dressed in somber black. Suits and dresses blended into a sea of quiet mourning, the students standing shoulder to shoulder as the simple casket was lowered into the ground.
Cid stood near the front, dressed in a formal black suit that looked strangely sharp on his usually rumpled frame. A dark peaked cap sat low on his head, the brim casting a shadow over his eyes. He hadn't said a word the entire service. His hands were at his sides as if he didnt know what to do with them.
Yui stood beside him, close enough that their shoulders brushed. She wore a simple black dress, her short hair neatly brushed back. She had stayed right there with him since they had arrived together. Her eyes were glistening with unshed tears as she watched the funeral go on.
The priest finished the final words. The casket settled into the earth with a soft, final sound. One by one the class stepped forward to place flowers or say their private goodbyes. Mina was openly crying, supported by Jiro and Momo. Kirishima stood rigid, with his fists clenched at his sides, trying to be strong for the others. The rest of the class was silent, the weight of the loss settling over them like a blanket none of them could shake off.
When the last flower had been placed, the crowd began to thin. But Cid didn't move. He stayed rooted in place, hat brim low, staring at the fresh grave. The last and only time he saw her face flashed before his eyes and it caused him to clench his jaw so tight it hurt.
Yui turned to him gently, her voice soft. "Cid… are you okay?"
He didn't answer right away. Then, in a low, steady voice that barely carried above the breeze, he said:
"Yeah… I'm fine. Except it's a terrible day for rain."
Yui blinked, confused. She glanced up at the clear blue sky, not a cloud in sight. "It's not raining."
Cid pulled the cap lower to cover his eyes. A single tear slipped down his cheek, catching the sunlight as it fell. His voice was quiet, almost broken.
"Yes… it is."
Yui's eyes widened as she saw the tear fall in front of her in slow motion as if the world slowed as her eyes tracked it. Without a word she reached down and took his hand fully, fingers lacing through his and squeezing hard. She didn't let go. They stayed like that for a long time, the two of them standing alone at the grave as the rest of the class slowly drifted away. The breeze rustled the leaves, but neither of them moved.
After what felt like hours they turned to leave. Yui kept her hand in his as they walked toward the cemetery exit.
A sleek black limo pulled up silently at the curb just as they reached the gate. Two men in crisp dark suits stepped out, their expressions blank and professional. They moved with the calm authority of people who were used to being obeyed.
One of them stepped forward and addressed Cid directly. "Mr. Kageno. The Director would like a word with you. Please step into the vehicle."
Cid stopped. His grip on Yui's hand tightened for a fraction of a second. He looked at the agents, then at the tinted windows of the limo.
Yui's eyes narrowed slightly as she realized who these people were. She squeezed his hand hard and glared at the two agents.
Cid looked at them tired and emotionally drained. "I'm not in the mood to deal with this right now, I will talk to her later." he tried to continue walking but an agent stepped in front of him.
"Mr. Kageno. The Director would like a word with you right now if you would. She is waiting in the car" the agent said a bit more sternly as if it would force him to comply.
Cid let out a long, tired sigh knowing he couldn't put this off much longer any way so he might as well get it over with. He turned to Yui, looking her in the eye. "I'll be right back. Don't go far." making sure to emphasize what he wanted.
She nodded, though worry was clear in her expression. He gave her hand one last squeeze before letting go and walking toward the limo. The agents opened the door for him. He slid inside without a word.
The interior was cool and dimly lit. A woman in a sharp business suit sat across from him — the Director of the Hero Public Safety Commission. She was older, composed, with sharp eyes that studied him like a specimen.
"Mr. Kageno," she began smoothly, voice polite but firm. "We've been monitoring the situation at U.A. Your performance during the USJ incident was… impressive from the footage we have seen. The new abilities you displayed are exactly the kind of potential we always knew you had. It's time we discussed bringing you back under proper supervision, you will need more guidance now than ever. The Commission has resources that can help you master—"
Cid cut her off, voice low and even.
"I'm done."
The Director's expression didn't change, but her eyes sharpened. "Done?"
"I'm done with the HPSC," Cid said, staring straight at her. "I'm not your asset. I'm not your tool. I want out. Full release. No more check-ins. No more monitoring. I'm done, I quit, I will no longer work with the HSPC as its tool."
The Director leaned back slightly, a faint smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You know that's not how this works, Cid. Your kind of power is too dangerous to be left unchecked and well accidents happen all the time… especially people close to you. We wouldn't want anything to happen to that nice girl out there, would we? So how about you be a good little--urgh"
He didn't let her finish
Cid's eyes narrowed. The glowing star pattern flickered faintly behind his black irises. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't move.
Instead, he focused.
With a single, precise thought he expanded the space right around the Director's heart — a controlled, microscopic increase in the space around the organ and vessels, just enough to create sudden, uncomfortable pressure on her chest. The Director's breath hitched. Her hand instinctively went to her chest as a wave of dizziness and tightness washed over her.
Cid's voice remained calm, almost conversational.
"You're getting old, Chairwoman. Your heart isn't as strong as it used to be. You should really take better care of yourself, you're looking a little out of breath" cid said in a voice that would have sounded sincere if the look he was giving her hadn't promised her a very unpleasant death if she answered wrong.
The Director's eyes widened. A thin sheen of sweat broke out on her forehead and she started breathing heavier. She stared at him, the polite mask cracking for the first time.
Cid held her gaze, cold and unblinking.
He released the pressure with another thought. The Director gasped softly, hand still pressed to her chest, breathing hard.
She glared at him, voice tight with anger and reluctance.
"…Fine," she spat, the word dripping with venom "We'll leave you be. For now."
Cid didn't smile. He simply opened the door and stepped out of the limo. The agents outside didn't try to stop him.
He stopped just at the threshold and looked back at her and said " I hope we never meet again, it was a horrible time knowing you." Then he turned and walked away.
Yui was waiting just a few steps away, worry clear on her face. When she saw him, she rushed forward and took his hand again.
"Are you okay?" she asked softly.
Cid looked down at her, the corner of his mouth twitching in a tired, faint smile.
"Yeah," he said quietly. "I'm okay. I just had to deal with some business."
He squeezed her hand once, and together they walked away from the limo.
