Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 : The Eyes Watching Her

Morning arrived quietly over the city.

Sunlight stretched across the tall windows of the Romano penthouse, bathing the marble floor in pale gold.

Elena stood near the balcony, arms crossed as she stared at the busy streets far below.

Cars moved like ants.

People rushed through their daily routines.

Normal life.

A life she had once lived.

Now everything felt different.

She was no longer just Elena.

She was Elena Romano.

The wife of one of the most powerful men in the country.

And apparently…

A target.

The thought still unsettled her.

Behind her, the penthouse doors opened.

Footsteps approached.

She didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

"Good morning," Alessandro said calmly.

Elena exhaled slowly.

"I'm starting to think your definition of 'good' is very different from mine."

Alessandro walked beside her and looked down at the city.

"You're still thinking about Victor Hale."

It wasn't a question.

Elena glanced at him.

"You told me a powerful enemy is watching me."

She paused.

"Should I just forget that?"

His expression remained unreadable.

"No."

"Then what do you expect?"

"Adapt."

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"That's your advice?"

"Yes."

He turned slightly toward her.

"This world doesn't reward fear."

His voice was calm, but there was something serious underneath it.

Elena looked back toward the city.

"I'm not afraid."

She paused.

"I'm just… adjusting."

Alessandro studied her quietly for a moment.

Then he nodded once.

"That's good."

Before Elena could respond, Alessandro's phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Yes."

His tone shifted slightly.

Professional.

Focused.

Elena watched him carefully.

She couldn't hear the other side of the call, but she noticed something.

Alessandro's jaw tightened.

Then he said quietly:

"Send him up."

The call ended.

Elena frowned.

"Who was that?"

"My strategist."

"Strategist?"

"Yes."

She tilted her head.

"You have a strategist?"

Alessandro looked at her.

"Running an empire requires more than guns."

That made sense.

A few minutes later, the elevator doors opened.

A tall man stepped into the penthouse.

He looked younger than Elena expected.

Maybe early thirties.

He wore a simple black suit, but unlike the others Elena had seen around Alessandro, this man didn't look like a bodyguard.

He looked like a scientist.

Sharp eyes.

Calm posture.

Observant.

He immediately noticed Elena standing there.

His gaze flickered briefly with curiosity.

Alessandro spoke.

"Elena."

She turned.

"This is Adrian Vale."

The man nodded politely.

"My strategist."

Adrian extended his hand.

"Pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Romano."

Elena shook his hand.

His grip was firm but respectful.

"Nice to meet you too."

Adrian glanced between them briefly before speaking.

"I apologize for arriving unannounced, but we have a situation."

Alessandro gestured toward the living room.

"Explain."

Adrian walked toward the large screen mounted on the wall.

With a small remote, he activated it.

Several maps appeared.

Shipping routes.

Company branches.

Financial flows.

Elena blinked.

This looked complicated.

Adrian pointed to one section.

"Victor Hale has been making quiet movements across three different markets."

Alessandro crossed his arms.

"Which ones?"

"Shipping logistics."

That wasn't surprising.

Adrian continued.

"Private security firms."

Elena frowned slightly.

Why security companies?

Then Adrian added the final one.

"And media networks."

Now Alessandro's eyes narrowed.

"Media?"

Adrian nodded.

"Yes."

He clicked the remote again.

A news article appeared on the screen.

The headline read:

"Romano Empire: Built on Power or Corruption?"

Elena's stomach tightened slightly.

"That's… not good."

Adrian shook his head.

"It's only the beginning."

He brought up another article.

Then another.

Then another.

All of them questioning the Romano family.

Their business.

Their influence.

Their power.

Alessandro's voice was calm.

"But these aren't attacks."

Adrian nodded.

"Correct."

"They're probes."

Elena looked confused.

"Probes?"

Adrian glanced at her.

"Yes."

His tone was patient.

"When powerful enemies attack, they rarely strike immediately."

He pointed to the screen.

"They test the defenses first."

Elena understood now.

"So he's testing how strong the Romano empire is."

Adrian gave a small approving nod.

"Exactly."

Alessandro walked closer to the screen.

"What's his endgame?"

Adrian looked thoughtful.

"That's the problem."

"We don't know yet."

The room fell quiet.

Elena suddenly spoke.

"Maybe… it's not about business."

Both men looked at her.

She felt slightly awkward under their attention.

"What do you mean?" Alessandro asked.

Elena gestured toward the screen.

"You said he hates you."

"Yes."

"And now you suddenly got married."

Adrian's eyes sharpened slightly.

Alessandro remained silent.

Elena shrugged lightly.

"If I were a villain in a movie…"

She pointed at herself.

"I'd start here."

Adrian slowly turned toward Alessandro.

"That's actually possible."

Alessandro's gaze darkened.

"Victor Hale isn't stupid."

Adrian nodded.

"That's why it makes sense."

Elena blinked.

"Wait… you're agreeing with me?"

Adrian smiled faintly.

"Strategically speaking, yes."

Alessandro looked back at the screen.

Then said quietly:

"He wouldn't touch her."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"You sound very certain."

Alessandro's voice was calm.

"But I'm not."

The room went silent again.

Then Adrian spoke carefully.

"There's something else."

Alessandro glanced at him.

"What?"

Adrian changed the screen again.

A photograph appeared.

It was taken from far away.

But Elena immediately recognized the place.

Her favorite café.

From yesterday.

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Wait…"

Adrian pointed at the image.

"This was taken yesterday afternoon."

Alessandro's voice turned colder.

"Surveillance?"

Adrian nodded.

"Professional level."

Elena felt a chill run down her spine.

Someone had been watching her.

Without her knowing.

Alessandro's expression hardened.

"Victor Hale."

Adrian crossed his arms.

"Most likely."

Elena swallowed slowly.

"So… he's already watching me?"

Alessandro turned toward her.

His voice was calm.

But dangerous.

"Yes."

She forced herself to stay calm.

"Well… that's creepy."

Adrian almost laughed.

But stopped when Alessandro glanced at him.

Then Elena asked quietly:

"So what happens now?"

Alessandro walked toward her slowly.

His presence felt heavier than usual.

"Now…"

His eyes were sharp.

"We prepare."

Elena tilted her head.

"For what?"

Alessandro's voice was low.

"For the moment Victor Hale decides to stop watching…"

He paused.

"…and starts acting."

Outside the penthouse windows, the city looked peaceful.

But beneath that calm surface…

A war was slowly beginning.

And Elena Romano had just become its center.
