Chapter 13 - Chapter Thirteen: The Spear of Winter

The sky roared.

Above the clearing, the massive spear of ice continued to grow, twisting slowly in the storm like a frozen comet waiting to fall. Lightning-like streaks of pale blue energy crawled across its surface.

The Sentinel lowered its arms.

The weapon was ready.

Aeralyn felt the air grow painfully cold.

Even the warmth of the Heart of Balance seemed to tremble under the weight of the coming strike.

Teren pointed upward with a shaking hand.

"That thing is bigger than the mountain we just climbed."

Rovan cracked his neck.

"Then we should probably break it before it drops."

Caelum stood beside the glowing Heart, both hands lifted as he focused on maintaining the barrier. Frost swirled around him like a protective storm.

"I cannot leave this position," he said. "If the barrier collapses, the Heart will be exposed."

Aeralyn nodded.

"Then we handle the sky."

Lysa looked up, calculating quickly.

"I can reach it with arrows," she said, "but I doubt wooden shafts will stop a falling glacier."

Aeralyn stepped forward into the center of the clearing.

Golden warmth gathered around her palms, spreading outward like the glow of sunrise.

"We won't stop it alone," she said.

Rovan grinned.

"Good thing we're not alone."

The constructs rushed them again.

Rovan charged first, spear spinning in his hands as he smashed into the front line. Ice bodies shattered beneath his strikes, fragments scattering across the snow.

Lysa fired arrow after arrow into the advancing creatures, each shot exploding into bursts of frozen energy that slowed the approaching army.

Teren nervously raised his staff.

"Okay… okay… I can do this…"

He released a pulse of magic that knocked several constructs backward.

Then another.

Then another.

"Hey!" he shouted. "I'm getting good at this!"

Aeralyn barely heard him.

Her eyes were fixed on the sky.

The spear began to fall.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

Wind howled as the enormous weapon tore through the storm clouds.

"Now!" she shouted.

Lysa fired three arrows in rapid succession.

The arrows struck the falling spear and shattered into bursts of magic—but the weapon barely slowed.

Rovan hurled his spear upward with incredible strength.

It spun through the air and struck the icy surface with a thunderous crack.

For a moment, a fracture appeared.

But the spear continued falling.

Teren stared in horror.

"That did nothing!"

Aeralyn closed her eyes.

The warmth inside her surged.

She could feel the Heart of Balance behind her, pulsing like a second heartbeat. Its energy reached toward her magic, amplifying the heat flowing through her body.

For the first time since the journey began, she didn't resist it.

She embraced it.

Golden light erupted from her hands.

"Move!" she shouted.

The others dove aside as Aeralyn thrust both palms toward the sky.

A massive wave of blazing warmth exploded upward.

The clearing filled with blinding light.

The two forces collided.

Fire against frost.

The falling spear cracked violently as the sudden heat spread across its frozen surface.

Steam exploded into the air as entire sections began to melt and fracture.

The weapon shattered.

Thousands of shards of ice burst apart in the sky like falling stars.

Fragments rained across the valley, crashing harmlessly into the snow.

For a moment, the battlefield went silent.

Then Teren slowly stood up.

"…She did it."

Rovan retrieved his spear from the snow, staring upward with a grin.

"Remind me never to stand in front of her when she's angry."

Lysa lowered her bow.

"That was impressive."

But the victory lasted only a second.

The Sentinel roared.

The sound shook the valley harder than before.

The giant stepped forward, entering the clearing completely now.

Up close, it was even larger than they imagined—its frozen armor layered with ancient runes, its glowing core pulsing with terrible cold.

Aeralyn's breath slowed.

"That thing is the one controlling the army."

Caelum nodded behind them.

"Yes."

The constructs surged again.

But this time they didn't attack the group.

They rushed the barrier.

Hundreds of ice creatures slammed against the glowing shield surrounding the Heart of Balance.

Cracks spread across the surface of the barrier like spiderwebs.

Caelum's voice tightened.

"They are weakening it."

The Sentinel raised one enormous arm.

Cold energy gathered around its hand.

Aeralyn realized the truth instantly.

"It's not trying to kill us," she said.

"It's trying to destroy the Heart."

Teren looked panicked.

"That seems significantly worse!"

Rovan stepped forward again.

"Then we stop the big one."

Lysa nodded.

"I'll keep the smaller ones off Caelum."

Aeralyn looked at the towering Sentinel.

Warm light flared around her hands again.

"Rovan," she said.

He glanced back.

"Yeah?"

"Let's bring down a giant."

He grinned wider.

"Finally something interesting."

The two of them ran forward together.

The Sentinel swung its arm like a falling mountain.

Rovan leapt aside just in time as the ground exploded beneath the impact.

Aeralyn slid across the snow and unleashed a blast of golden heat against the giant's leg.

The magic struck with a thunderous crack.

Ice shattered across its armor—but the Sentinel barely moved.

"Okay," Rovan said, dodging another massive strike.

"That's… a big giant."

Aeralyn fired another blast of magic.

More cracks spread across the creature's frozen body.

"But not unbreakable," she said.

Behind them, Lysa continued firing arrows into the swarm attacking the barrier.

Teren sent bursts of magic wherever he could, knocking back creatures that got too close to Caelum.

And in the center of the clearing, the Heart of Balance pulsed brighter and brighter.

The Sentinel lifted both arms.

The storm above the valley darkened again.

But this time, the giant wasn't aiming at the sky.

It was aiming at the ground.

Aeralyn's eyes widened.

"It's going to bring the mountain down."

Rovan glanced upward at the shaking cliffs around the clearing.

"…That seems rude."

The Sentinel slammed both fists into the earth.

The entire valley trembled.

Cracks split across the frozen ground.

The battle was no longer just against the army.

The world itself was starting to collapse around them.

And the Heart of Balance was still in the middle of it.
