Chapter 15 - Chapter Fifteen: Echoes Beneath the Ice

For several long moments, no one moved.

Snow drifted quietly across the clearing where the Sentinel had fallen. The massive body of the giant lay shattered across the valley floor, its once-glowing runes now dim and lifeless. Fragments of ice glittered across the ground like broken glass beneath the pale sky.

The storm had faded.

Only a cold wind remained.

Teren was the first to break the silence.

"…Did we win?"

Rovan poked one of the crumbled constructs with the tip of his spear.

The pile of ice didn't move.

He shrugged.

"Looks like it."

Lysa stepped down from the rock she had been using as a vantage point. She scanned the forest edge carefully, bow still ready in her hands.

"The army's gone," she confirmed.

Aeralyn exhaled slowly.

Her body felt like it had been drained of every ounce of strength. The warmth that had burned through her moments ago had faded into a soft, lingering glow beneath her skin.

She looked back toward the center of the clearing.

The Heart of Balance floated gently above the snow again, pulsing with calm, steady light.

Caelum stood beside it.

But something about him had changed.

Aeralyn pushed herself to her feet and walked over.

"Are you alright?" she asked quietly.

Caelum didn't answer right away.

He was staring at the Heart.

His reflection shimmered across its glowing surface.

"…Yes," he said finally.

But his voice sounded distant.

Rovan joined them, leaning his spear against his shoulder.

"If that's what victory looks like," he said, glancing around at the destroyed battlefield, "I'm almost afraid to ask what defeat looks like."

Teren stood up slowly, brushing snow from his cloak.

"I vote we never find out."

Lysa approached last.

Her sharp eyes moved across the broken remains of the Sentinel.

"That creature wasn't just another construct," she said.

Caelum nodded.

"It was ancient."

He turned slightly toward the others.

"Older than the kingdoms of this world."

Teren blinked.

"You mean someone built that thing… a long time ago?"

"Yes," Caelum replied.

"And not just one."

Aeralyn frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Caelum placed his hand gently against the glowing Heart.

The crystal pulsed brighter.

"Sentinels were guardians of the First Winter," he explained.

"They were created to protect powerful artifacts like this one."

Rovan crossed his arms.

"Well that one did a terrible job."

"It did its duty," Caelum said calmly.

"It tried to stop us from moving the Heart."

Aeralyn looked back at the giant's shattered body.

"But it attacked us."

"Yes," Caelum replied.

"Because it believed we were the threat."

Teren scratched his head.

"That's… not very comforting."

The group fell silent again.

Snow continued falling softly across the valley.

But something still felt wrong.

Aeralyn felt it first.

The warmth inside her shifted uneasily.

"Caelum," she said slowly.

"Why is the Heart still glowing stronger?"

Everyone turned toward the crystal.

It pulsed again.

This time brighter.

And faster.

Lysa's eyes narrowed.

"That doesn't look like it's calming down."

Caelum's expression darkened slightly.

"It isn't."

Rovan sighed.

"Of course it isn't."

Aeralyn stepped closer to the Heart.

The air around it hummed with energy now.

"What's happening?"

Caelum placed both hands against the crystal.

For the first time since they had met him, uncertainty flickered across his face.

"The Heart is reacting."

"To what?"

He looked toward the distant mountains beyond the valley.

"To something waking up."

Teren groaned.

"You've got to be kidding."

The ground trembled slightly beneath their feet.

Not a violent quake.

Just a faint vibration.

But it was enough.

Everyone felt it.

Rovan slowly turned toward the distant horizon.

"Please tell me that's just the mountain settling."

No one answered.

Far beyond the forest, deep in the frozen mountain range, a faint blue glow appeared along the cliffs.

Another.

Then another.

Lysa stared at the distant lights.

"…Those look like runes."

Caelum nodded slowly.

"Yes."

Aeralyn felt a chill run down her spine.

"More Sentinels?"

Caelum's voice was quiet.

"No."

The Heart of Balance pulsed once more.

Stronger than ever before.

"Something worse."

The distant lights spread across the mountains like waking stars beneath the ice.

Ancient power was stirring again.

And whatever had slept beneath the frozen world for centuries…

Was beginning to wake up.
