The mountains glowed.
Far beyond the frozen forest, streaks of pale blue light crawled along the cliffs like veins of ancient magic awakening beneath the ice. One by one, the runes carved into the distant peaks ignited, spreading across the mountain range in a silent chain reaction.
Aeralyn stared at the horizon.
"That's… not normal."
Teren squinted.
"It looks like the mountains are… lighting up."
Rovan rested his spear against his shoulder and sighed.
"I liked the mountains better when they were just mountains."
The Heart of Balance pulsed again.
Its light flared brighter than before, sending a ripple of warm energy across the clearing. Snow melted slightly around it, forming thin rings of steam in the cold air.
Caelum watched the distant runes carefully.
"They're awakening," he said.
Lysa frowned.
"What exactly is awakening?"
Caelum turned toward them.
"The network."
Everyone stared at him.
Teren blinked.
"…That explains absolutely nothing."
Caelum stepped closer to the Heart and placed his hand against its glowing surface again. The crystal hummed softly beneath his touch.
"Long before the kingdoms existed," he began, "this world was protected by ancient guardians and powerful artifacts. The Heart of Balance was one of them."
Rovan gestured toward the shattered Sentinel lying across the valley.
"And that giant ice nightmare was another."
"Yes."
"But the Sentinels were only soldiers."
Aeralyn felt a knot forming in her stomach.
"If they were soldiers… then who was the commander?"
Caelum looked back toward the glowing mountains.
"The Architects of Winter."
The wind seemed colder after he said the words.
Teren crossed his arms.
"That name sounds extremely bad."
"They were ancient beings who controlled winter magic on a scale far beyond anything we know," Caelum continued.
"They built the Sentinels, created the rune network across the mountains, and forged artifacts like the Heart."
Lysa glanced at the glowing peaks again.
"So if those runes are lighting up…"
"…it means something is activating the system again," Aeralyn finished.
Caelum nodded.
"Exactly."
Rovan scratched his chin.
"So we destroyed their giant ice guard dog… and now the entire security system is waking up."
"That is one way to describe it," Caelum said.
Teren groaned loudly.
"I hate ancient security systems."
The ground trembled again.
This time the vibration lasted longer.
Cracks spread across the frozen river at the edge of the clearing.
The Heart pulsed once more.
Stronger.
Faster.
Aeralyn stepped closer to it again.
The warmth flowing from the crystal now felt… urgent.
"It's warning us," she said quietly.
Caelum looked at her.
"Yes."
"Warning us about what?"
Before he could answer, a low rumble echoed from the distant mountains.
It wasn't thunder.
It was deeper.
Slower.
Like something enormous shifting beneath layers of ice.
Everyone turned toward the glowing peaks.
The runes flared brighter.
A large section of the mountainside suddenly collapsed, sending a massive avalanche cascading into the valley below.
Snow and ice thundered down the cliffs like a crashing wave.
But that wasn't the worst part.
From the center of the collapsing mountain, a shape began to rise.
Teren squinted.
"…Please tell me that's just a rock."
Lysa shook her head slowly.
"No."
The shape moved.
Ice and snow slid off its enormous body as it stood taller and taller against the horizon.
Rovan exhaled slowly.
"Well."
"That's bigger than the Sentinel."
Aeralyn's breath caught in her throat.
The creature emerging from the mountain was colossal.
Even at this distance, it dwarfed the giant they had just defeated.
Its body was made of jagged ice and ancient stone, glowing with countless runes that burned like frozen fire.
Two enormous wings of crystalline frost slowly unfolded from its back.
Teren looked like he might faint.
"That… that's a dragon."
Caelum shook his head.
"No."
His voice was quiet.
"That is an Architect."
The creature lifted its head.
A roar rolled across the valley like a living storm.
The sound shook the trees of the frozen forest and sent ripples across the cracked river ice.
The Heart of Balance pulsed violently now.
Aeralyn could feel its energy surging through the clearing.
Rovan spun his spear once.
"Alright," he said.
"New plan."
Lysa lowered her bow slowly.
"I'm open to suggestions."
The enormous Architect stepped fully out of the broken mountain.
Each step shook the ground beneath their feet—even from miles away.
Caelum stared at it grimly.
"If it reaches the Heart…"
"It will destroy it," Aeralyn finished.
Teren stared at the giant figure marching across the distant snowfields.
"…How exactly are we supposed to stop something that big?"
No one answered right away.
The wind howled softly through the valley.
Snow drifted across the shattered battlefield where the Sentinel had fallen.
And far away, the ancient Architect of Winter began its slow march toward them.
Aeralyn clenched her fists.
Warm magic flickered faintly around her hands again.
"This world survived the first winter," she said quietly.
Rovan glanced at her.
"And?"
She looked toward the approaching giant.
"It can survive this one too."
The Heart of Balance flared brightly behind them.
And the next battle had already begun.
