Morning arrived slowly in the valley.
A pale gray light crept over the frozen mountains, turning the endless snowfields silver beneath the rising sun. The broken remains of the Architect were already beginning to disappear under drifting snow, as if the world itself was trying to bury the battle that had taken place.
The group stood near the edge of the valley.
Ahead of them, the golden beam from the Heart of Balance stretched across the snow like a glowing road leading straight toward the towering mountain range.
Rovan stared at it.
"Well," he said, adjusting his grip on his spear, "I guess we're really doing this."
Teren groaned quietly.
"Into the ancient mountain network full of magical disasters?"
Rovan nodded.
"Exactly that."
Lysa checked the arrows remaining in her quiver.
"Complaining will not make the mountains smaller," she said calmly.
Teren sighed.
"I wasn't hoping for smaller. Just… less cursed."
Aeralyn stood beside the floating Heart of Balance.
The crystal hovered just above the snow, drifting slowly forward as if it already knew the path ahead. Its warm golden glow cut through the cold air like a small sun guiding them forward.
She looked back at Caelum.
"You're quiet."
The prince stood with his cloak shifting softly in the mountain wind. His icy blue eyes remained fixed on the distant peaks.
"These mountains," he said quietly, "were once the center of winter magic in this world."
Rovan raised an eyebrow.
"That sounds like something we should have known earlier."
Caelum ignored the comment.
"The Architects were guardians. Not conquerors."
Aeralyn frowned.
"But that one tried to destroy the Heart."
"Yes."
"Because something has changed."
The group began walking.
Snow crunched beneath their boots as they followed the glowing path across the valley floor. The mountains loomed larger with every step, their jagged peaks rising like frozen spears into the clouds.
Teren shivered.
"Anyone else feel like we're walking into a trap?"
"Probably," Lysa replied.
Rovan smiled slightly.
"Definitely."
They reached the frozen river where the Architect had crossed earlier.
The ice was shattered here, broken into massive chunks scattered across the water. A faint mist of cold energy still drifted from the cracks.
Aeralyn knelt near one of the fractured sections.
"The water isn't frozen anymore," she said.
The river beneath the ice flowed slowly now, dark and cold.
Caelum examined the broken ice.
"The Architect's energy melted the current beneath the surface."
Teren stepped carefully across a large slab.
"So the giant ice monster accidentally fixed the river."
Rovan jumped across the gap and landed beside him.
"See? Not all bad."
They crossed the river cautiously, hopping between the broken pieces of ice until they reached the far side.
From there, the path grew steeper.
The mountain pass began where the forest came to an end.
Tall black cliffs rose on both sides, narrowing the path into a long frozen corridor that twisted upward into the mountains.
Wind howled through the stone walls like a distant warning.
The Heart drifted forward into the pass without hesitation.
Aeralyn followed.
Snow crunched beneath their boots as they moved deeper between the cliffs.
The air grew colder.
Much colder.
Even Aeralyn's warmth struggled against the freezing wind now.
Teren wrapped his cloak tighter.
"I officially miss the valley."
Rovan glanced up at the cliffs.
"Too quiet."
Lysa nodded slightly.
"There should be animals here."
"Or at least birds."
But the mountains were silent.
No sound of wings.
No tracks in the snow.
Only wind.
After nearly an hour of climbing, the path widened slightly.
Aeralyn suddenly stopped.
The Heart had stopped too.
Its golden glow brightened.
"What is it?" Rovan asked.
Aeralyn pointed ahead.
At first, it looked like another wall of ice blocking the pass.
But as they moved closer, shapes became clearer.
Massive shapes.
Frozen in place.
Teren's voice dropped to a whisper.
"…Oh no."
Dozens of enormous figures stood across the frozen canyon.
They were shaped like giants made of ice and stone.
Each one was covered in the same glowing runes the Architect had carried.
But these were not broken.
They were standing.
Still.
Dormant.
Sleeping.
Rovan stared at the silent army.
"You've got to be kidding me."
Lysa counted quickly.
"Twenty… maybe more."
Caelum stepped forward slowly.
His voice was quiet.
"The Sentinel army."
Teren looked like he might faint.
"You mean the smaller version of the thing we already almost died fighting?"
"Yes."
The Heart pulsed again.
Golden light spread across the canyon walls.
The beam pointed beyond the frozen army.
Deeper into the mountain pass.
Aeralyn swallowed.
"So the source… is past them."
Rovan exhaled slowly.
"Of course it is."
Lysa lowered her voice.
"Can they wake up?"
Caelum studied the runes carefully.
"If the mountain network fully activates…"
"…yes."
Teren stared nervously at the silent giants surrounding them.
"…Then maybe we should move very quietly."
The group began walking again.
Slowly.
Carefully.
They passed between the towering frozen Sentinels.
Each giant stood twice the height of the one they had fought in the valley.
Ice claws.
Stone armor.
Rows of glowing runes sleeping across their bodies.
Aeralyn felt her heart pounding with every step.
The Heart of Balance floated silently ahead of them.
The only light in the canyon.
Halfway through the frozen army, something happened.
One rune flickered.
Then another.
A faint blue glow pulsed along the chest of the nearest Sentinel.
Teren froze.
"…Did anyone else see that?"
The rune flickered again.
And the giant's head moved.
Just slightly.
A grinding sound echoed through the canyon.
Rovan slowly raised his spear.
"…Run."
