Chapter 23 - Chapter 23 – The Broken Path

______________

The sphere didn't stay quiet for long.

Its pulse grew stronger.

More frequent.

Like something inside it was trying to break free—or wake up.

Dianara stood closest to it now, her eyes scanning every flicker of light, every shift in its structure.

"…It's accelerating," she said.

Izumi stepped beside her.

"…Because I touched it?"

Dianara didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…Partly."

She pointed at the crack running across its surface.

"But this…"

"…this was already happening."

Mira leaned against a broken pillar.

"So we're basically standing next to a ticking bomb."

"Not exactly," Dianara replied.

"It's not unstable in the way you think."

She paused.

"…It's incomplete."

Lior looked up at the sphere.

"…Like the system?"

Dianara nodded.

"Yes."

"And if what Izumi saw is correct…"

Her voice lowered.

"…this core was never finished."

Seraphina stepped forward.

"…Then we don't activate it."

Simple.

Direct.

Logical.

Izumi shook his head.

"…We might not have a choice."

Mira immediately pushed off the wall.

"Don't start that again."

Izumi glanced at her.

"I'm not saying I'll do it."

"…Not yet."

"But if this is the only way to stop that thing—"

"It's not," Dianara cut in suddenly.

Everyone turned.

Her expression had changed.

Focused.

Sharp.

Determined.

"…There's another possibility."

A Different Theory

Silence fell.

Then Mira smirked slightly.

"…Finally."

"Took you long enough."

Dianara ignored her.

Her attention locked onto the sphere.

"…If the system was incomplete…"

"…then someone tried to finish it."

Izumi frowned.

"…Who?"

Dianara's voice dropped.

"…Or failed to."

She moved closer to the sphere.

Studying the cracks.

The energy patterns.

"…This isn't random damage."

"…It's structural."

Izumi stepped closer.

"…Meaning?"

Dianara pointed at the inner glow.

"…Something was inserted."

"…And rejected."

That changed everything.

Lior blinked.

"…So someone already tried to become the core?"

Dianara nodded slowly.

"…Yes."

Mira crossed her arms.

"And it didn't work."

"…Exactly."

Seraphina's gaze sharpened.

"…Then the system rejected them."

Dianara nodded again.

"Yes."

"And that tells us something important."

Izumi looked at her.

"…What?"

Dianara turned to face him.

"…Compatibility isn't enough."

Silence.

"…There's another condition," she continued.

"…Something the system requires…"

"…that hasn't been met yet."

The Hidden Condition

Izumi's expression shifted.

"…Then what is it?"

Dianara hesitated.

"…I don't know."

"But—"

She looked at the sphere again.

"…we might be able to find out."

Mira raised an eyebrow.

"…How?"

Dianara took a breath.

"…By triggering a partial activation."

Immediate reaction—

"No."

Seraphina's voice was firm.

"That's too dangerous."

Dianara didn't argue.

But she didn't back down either.

"…So is doing nothing."

Izumi looked between them.

"…If we don't understand it…"

"…we can't make the right choice."

Silence.

Then—

Seraphina closed her eyes briefly.

Thinking.

Weighing.

Calculating.

"…A controlled attempt," she said finally.

"Nothing more."

Dianara nodded.

"That's all I need."

Mira sighed.

"…This is definitely going to go wrong."

The Attempt

They moved into position.

Carefully.

Dianara set up a stabilizing formation around the sphere.

More complex than before.

Layered.

Precise.

"…This should limit the reaction," she said.

"…In theory."

Mira smirked.

"In theory is always comforting."

Lior stepped back.

Holding the fragment close.

"…What do I do?"

Dianara pointed.

"Stay ready."

"If it reacts too strongly, we cut the connection immediately."

Izumi stepped forward.

The sphere hovered in front of him.

The crack faintly glowing.

Waiting.

"…Same as before?" he asked.

Dianara nodded.

"…But this time…"

"…don't go too deep."

Izumi exhaled slowly.

Then—

Placed his hand on the sphere.

End Build-Up

The reaction was instant.

The sphere lit up—

Brighter than before.

The crack widened—

Faster.

Energy surged through the chamber.

The formation around it flickered.

Struggling.

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…That's too much!"

Lior shouted—

"The fragment's reacting!"

Mira stepped forward—

"…Of course it is!"

Izumi's vision blurred.

The world began to shift—

Again.

But this time—

Something was different.

The system didn't just respond.

It resisted.

The moment Izumi touched the sphere—

The reaction was violent.

Not like before.

Not controlled.

Not calm.

The light surged wildly.

The crack across the sphere spread rapidly—

Branching into multiple fractures.

The stabilizing formation shattered instantly.

Dianara shouted—

"Pull back!"

But Izumi couldn't.

His body froze.

Not physically—

But internally.

Like something had locked onto him.

The world around him collapsed again.

But this time—

It wasn't white.

It was broken.

Fragments of space floated around him.

Shattered pieces of memory.

Incomplete visions.

Corrupted.

"…System… conflict detected…"

The voice returned.

But it was different now.

Distorted.

Glitching.

Izumi clenched his fists.

"…What's happening?!"

Images flashed around him.

Fast.

Chaotic.

A figure.

Standing where he stood now.

Another "core candidate."

Surrounded by light.

Trying to connect.

Then—

Rejection.

The system lashed out.

Energy surged violently.

The figure screamed—

Then vanished.

Gone.

Izumi's breath caught.

"…That's the one…"

"…who failed."

The voice echoed again.

Broken.

"…Previous attempt… unsuccessful…"

"…Compatibility threshold met…"

"…Condition failure…"

Izumi's eyes narrowed.

"…What condition?"

Silence.

Then—

The space around him shifted again.

This time—

Clearer.

More stable.

He saw the system being built.

Ancient beings working together.

Creating the fragments.

The seals.

The core.

And then—

The final step.

A circle.

A ritual.

Multiple individuals standing together.

Not one.

Izumi froze.

"…Wait…"

The voice returned.

Faint.

But clearer than before.

"…Final condition…"

"…Synchronization of multiple wills…"

Izumi's eyes widened.

"…Multiple…?"

The Real Truth

The vision stabilized further.

The ancient figures stood in formation.

Each holding a fragment.

Each connected.

Not one core.

A collective.

"…Single host insufficient…"

"…System requires resonance…"

"…Multiple compatible entities…"

Izumi's breath slowed.

"…So it wasn't supposed to be one person…"

"…Correct."

Everything clicked.

The failed attempt—

That person tried to become the core alone.

That's why the system rejected them.

That's why it broke.

Izumi clenched his fists.

"…Then why did you choose me?"

Silence.

Then—

The answer came.

"…Primary compatibility detected…"

"…Others… pending…"

Izumi's mind raced.

"…Others?"

Return to Reality

The world shattered again.

The chamber returned.

The sphere.

The others.

Izumi staggered back.

"…!"

Mira caught him immediately.

"Oi—!"

"You good?!"

He steadied himself.

Breathing heavily.

"…Yeah…"

But his eyes—

Were different.

Dianara rushed forward.

"What happened?!"

Izumi looked at all of them.

One by one.

"…It's not just me."

Silence.

Mira frowned.

"…What?"

Izumi pointed at the sphere.

"…The system…"

"…it doesn't need one core."

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…Don't tell me…"

Izumi nodded slowly.

"…It needs multiple."

Lior blinked.

"…Like… a group?"

"…Yes."

The New Possibility

The atmosphere shifted.

Completely.

Mira smirked slightly.

"…Now that sounds better."

Dianara stepped forward.

Her mind already racing again.

"…That explains everything."

"The rejection…"

"The instability…"

"…the incomplete system…"

Seraphina's gaze sharpened.

"…So the burden is shared."

Izumi nodded.

"…If we do this…"

"…no one disappears alone."

Mira crossed her arms.

"…Now you're talking."

But Dianara didn't relax.

Not fully.

"…There's still a problem."

Everyone turned.

"…We don't know how many are required."

"…Or what 'compatible' fully means."

Silence.

Izumi looked at his team.

"…Then we figure it out."

Final Scene

The sphere pulsed again.

But this time—

It wasn't unstable.

It was… responding.

To all of them.

Lior's fragment glowed.

Mira's shadow magic flickered slightly.

Dianara's mana reacted.

Even Seraphina's aura shifted faintly.

Dianara whispered—

"…It's recognizing us…"

Far below—

The sealed entity stirred again.

Stronger.

Faster.

And this time—

It felt something new.

Not one presence.

But many.

And far away—

Hidden in the shadows of the world—

Someone smiled.

"…So the system is waking up…"

The next move—

Had already begun.
