Chapter 28 - Chapter 28 – The Awakening Depths

___________________

The ocean trembled.

Not from magic.

Not from battle.

From something waking up.

The pressure crashing through the ancient corridors became unbearable as the ruins groaned around them.

Stone cracked.

Ancient pillars shattered.

Dark energy spread upward from beneath the ocean floor like black veins consuming the city.

Lior nearly lost balance.

"…W-What is that?!"

No one answered immediately.

Because everyone felt it.

That presence.

Ancient.

Massive.

Hungry.

Even Mira's smirk had disappeared.

"…Yeah…"

"…That's definitely bad."

Astra's eyes remained fixed on the darkness beyond the gate.

For the first time—

Her calm expression showed urgency.

"…It's waking too early."

Ravian stepped beside her instantly.

"…Can it fully awaken?"

"…Not yet."

She paused.

"…But partial awakening is enough to destroy this entire region."

Silence.

Dianara clenched her fists.

"…Then we leave. Now."

Another tremor shook the ruins violently.

This time stronger.

The massive gate behind Astra cracked slightly.

Black-red energy leaked through the opening.

The water around it distorted unnaturally.

Izumi narrowed his eyes.

"…That thing is behind the gate?"

Astra nodded once.

"…The Devourer."

The name alone made the atmosphere heavier.

The Escape Begins

Ravian moved immediately.

"…We retreat to the upper ruins."

Mira frowned.

"…Retreat?"

"…You cannot fight this."

Mira looked ready to argue—

Until the gate shook again.

A deep sound echoed through the corridor.

Not a roar.

Not a scream.

A heartbeat.

One massive pulse.

Everyone froze instantly.

Their fragments reacted violently.

The resonance lines between them flickered uncontrollably.

Lior grabbed his head.

"…Ah—!"

Dianara caught him quickly.

"…The system is reacting to it…"

Astra's voice lowered.

"…Because the Devourer was the reason the system was created."

That single sentence hit harder than the tremors.

Movement

"Go."

Ravian's voice turned sharp.

Commanding.

No one argued this time.

They ran.

Through collapsing corridors.

Across shattered ruins.

Ancient structures fell around them as black-red energy continued spreading upward through the city.

Izumi stayed near the back with Astra.

"…How long have you been guarding this place?"

"…I stopped counting."

"…Alone?"

Astra glanced at him briefly.

"…Mostly."

Something about that answer felt heavy.

Mira suddenly appeared beside them.

"…You two can do trauma bonding later."

The corridor ahead exploded.

BOOM.

A massive claw burst through the stone wall.

Black-red energy covering its surface.

Everyone immediately scattered.

"What the hell is THAT?!" Lior shouted.

The claw twitched unnaturally.

Far too large to belong to any normal creature.

Astra's eyes darkened.

"…A manifestation."

The claw slammed downward again.

Destroying the corridor instantly.

Seraphina moved first.

Her blade flashed—

A clean strike cut across the claw.

But—

It regenerated instantly.

"…Physical damage is ineffective," Astra warned.

Mira clicked her tongue.

"…Of course it is."

Team Coordination

Izumi stepped forward.

"…Then we suppress it and move!"

Ravian nodded immediately.

"…Agreed."

The team reacted quickly now.

Better than before.

More synchronized.

Dianara cast layered barriers to slow the claw's movements.

Lior reinforced them using fragment energy.

Seraphina cut apart incoming debris.

Mira vanished into shadows—

Reappearing directly above the claw.

"…Try eating this."

Blood-red shadow energy exploded from her daggers.

The claw recoiled slightly.

Astra's eyes widened faintly.

"…Shadow and blood…"

"…Interesting."

Izumi used the opening instantly.

His blade surged with resonance energy—

And slammed into the claw.

This time—

The regeneration slowed.

Ravian stepped in immediately afterward.

Golden-red mana erupting around him.

Together—

Their combined strike shattered the manifestation completely.

The corridor fell silent again.

For about three seconds.

Then the walls started cracking even harder.

"…RUN!" Mira shouted.

The Truth Below

They burst into a massive open chamber near the upper ruins.

Collapsed towers floated around them beneath the ocean currents.

Faint moonlight filtered through broken sections above.

But behind them—

The darkness kept rising.

Astra stared downward quietly.

"…It's adapting."

Dianara looked horrified.

"…Adapting to what?"

"…Us."

Silence.

Ravian's expression hardened.

"…The Devourer learns through resonance."

Lior looked pale.

"…You mean it's copying us?!"

"…Not exactly," Astra replied.

"…But the more it interacts with the system…"

"…the stronger it becomes."

Izumi clenched his fist.

"…Then we seal it again."

Astra looked at him directly.

"…That's no longer possible."

End Build-Up

The ocean floor beneath the ruins suddenly split open.

A gigantic eye opened within the darkness below.

Ancient.

Crimson.

Watching them.

Everyone froze.

The pressure crashing over them became monstrous.

Even breathing felt difficult.

The eye locked onto Izumi.

Then—

Toward all seven resonance holders.

And for the first time—

The Devourer smiled.

The eye stared at them.

Unmoving.

Ancient.

And yet—

Every single person there felt the same thing.

It was aware.

Not like a beast.

Not like a monster.

Like something intelligent.

Something old enough to understand fear itself.

Lior's legs trembled.

"…Why is it looking at us like that…"

Astra answered quietly.

"…Because it recognizes the resonance."

The giant crimson eye narrowed slightly.

The water around the ruins distorted violently.

Then—

The darkness moved.

A massive shape began rising from beneath the broken city.

Not fully.

Only partially.

But even that partial form was enormous.

Black-red energy wrapped around its body like living smoke while fragments of ancient chains dragged behind it through the ocean floor.

Dianara's breathing slowed.

"…Those chains…"

Ravian nodded grimly.

"…The original seal."

Crack.

One of the chains shattered.

The pressure instantly doubled.

Mira cursed under her breath.

"…Yeah, no."

"…I officially hate this thing."

The Devourer Speaks

Then—

The creature spoke.

Not aloud.

Not physically.

Inside their minds.

"Resonance…"

The voice was deep.

Broken.

Ancient beyond understanding.

Lior grabbed his head immediately.

"…AH—!"

Seraphina stepped beside him instantly, stabilizing him before he collapsed.

The Devourer's eye remained locked on the group.

"Incomplete…"

The floating fragments around them pulsed violently.

Astra's fragment glowed brightest of all.

The creature focused on her next.

"Last Guardian…"

Astra's expression hardened.

"…Don't speak to me."

For the first time—

Emotion entered her voice.

Anger.

Forbidden Truth

The ruins trembled again.

More chains cracked in the darkness below.

Izumi stepped beside Astra.

"…You know this thing personally."

Astra stayed silent briefly.

Then—

"…The first resonance failed because of it."

Everyone froze.

Dianara turned immediately.

"…What do you mean failed?"

Astra stared at the rising darkness.

"…The first complete resonance nearly succeeded."

"…The system stabilized."

"…The seal activated."

Her crimson eyes darkened slightly.

"…But the Devourer adapted."

Silence.

Ravian clenched his fist.

"…That information was never recorded…"

"…Because the survivors erased it."

Astra answered coldly.

Mira frowned.

"…Why?"

Astra looked at all of them.

"…Because they were terrified."

The Devourer suddenly moved.

A massive wave of black-red energy erupted upward.

"MOVE!" Ravian shouted.

The team scattered instantly as the blast tore through the ruins behind them, erasing entire structures instantly.

Not destroying.

Erasing.

Resonance Evolution

Izumi steadied himself mid-water.

"…We can't keep running forever!"

"…Correct."

Astra raised her hand slowly.

Her fragment floated upward.

"…So we force synchronization."

Dianara's eyes widened.

"…Are you insane?!"

"…Partial evolution."

Astra continued calmly.

"…Not completion."

"…Just enough to survive."

Ravian immediately understood.

"…You want to trigger combat resonance intentionally."

Izumi looked between them.

"…Can we even do that?"

Astra looked directly at him.

"…Only through the primary."

The Devourer's eye shifted again.

Watching carefully.

Learning.

"Interesting…"

Synchronization

Astra moved toward Izumi.

"…Listen carefully."

The pressure around them intensified again as another chain shattered below.

"…Resonance isn't just power."

"…It's acceptance."

Izumi frowned.

"…Acceptance of what?"

Astra's voice lowered.

"…Each other."

Before he could answer—

She placed her hand against his chest.

Directly over the resonance mark.

The world exploded in light.

Shared Connection

Instantly—

The connection spread.

Not just to Izumi.

To everyone.

Mira gasped slightly.

Seraphina's aura flared.

Lior nearly lost balance.

Dianara's magic surged wildly.

Ravian's mana erupted outward.

The resonance lines between all seven members became visible.

Bright.

Connected.

Alive.

For a moment—

They all felt each other completely.

Not surface emotions.

Not thoughts.

Everything.

Fear.

Resolve.

Pain.

Loneliness.

Hope.

Astra's endless isolation.

Mira's fear of abandonment.

Seraphina's hidden exhaustion.

Lior's insecurity.

Dianara's burden.

Ravian's guilt.

And Izumi—

The crushing pressure he kept carrying alone.

Mira's eyes widened slightly.

"…You idiot…"

The resonance pulsed again.

Stronger.

And this time—

The Devourer reacted.

Its eye narrowed sharply.

For the first time—

It looked cautious.

Final Moment

The seven resonance marks began glowing simultaneously.

The floating fragment pieces merged briefly into a circular formation above them.

Dianara stared upward in disbelief.

"…The system…"

"…it's responding…"

Astra's voice remained calm despite the chaos.

"…Good."

"…Now we survive."

Far below—

The Devourer roared for the first time.

The entire ocean shook.

And the war between resonance and destruction—

Finally began.
