Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: The library

The dungeon tunnels were quieter today.

Sam moved through them with far more confidence than before.

His footsteps were light.

His senses sharp.

Every distant drip of water… every shifting pebble… every faint monster growl echoed clearly in his enhanced perception.

"Stats definitely helped," Sam muttered.

He reached the familiar corridor where the trap door had dropped him yesterday.

Sam looked down at the floor suspiciously.

"…Yeah, not stepping there again."

Instead he stepped around the pressure plate carefully.

But before he could pass—

The old stone shifted.

CRACK.

The floor broke anyway.

"Aaaaah come on !"

Sam dropped through again.

THUD.

He landed on a pile of dusty books.

Sam slowly sat up.

"…Okay maybe that trap resets itself."

Dust floated through the air as the ancient chamber revealed itself again.

The Library of Evergreen.

Towering shelves.

Floating lanterns.

Statues of old wizards.

And endless books.

Sam stood up slowly, brushing dust off his coat.

"This place is still insane."

He walked deeper into the library.

This time he explored more carefully.

The books here weren't random.

They were organized.

Different sections.

Different magical disciplines.

He read the faded stone labels above the shelves.

ELEMENTAL MAGIC

SPELL THEORY

ANCIENT RITUALS

MAGICAL CREATURE STUDIES

Sam whistled.

"This place is basically wizard college."

He stopped in front of one shelf.

The label read:

STORM ARCHIVES

Sam grinned.

"Oh hell yeah."

He started pulling books out.

Titles appeared one after another.

"Storm Conduction Through Mana Channels."

"Advanced Lightning Redirection."

"Weather Manipulation for Intermediate Wizards."

Sam's eyes sparkled.

"I'm about to become Thor."

He stacked several books on a table and sat down.

For the next few hours…

Sam studied.

Carefully.

Slowly.

The books described techniques far beyond what he currently knew.

One chapter explained how to store lightning inside mana constructs.

Another described how ancient storm mages created temporary storm clouds above battlefields.

Sam practiced a small technique first.

He raised his hand.

Lightning appeared.

But this time…

He compressed it.

Instead of letting the energy explode outward, he forced it into a tiny sphere.

The lightning spun inside the orb like a trapped storm.

Sam smiled slightly.

"Storm battery."

The sphere hummed quietly in his hand.

Controlled.

Stable.

He released it.

The lightning vanished.

Sam leaned back in his chair.

"This place is ridiculous."

The system chimed softly.

Sam nodded.

"Nice."

Then he noticed something strange.

At the far end of the library…

A massive stone door stood behind several broken shelves.

He hadn't seen it yesterday.

Curious, Sam stood up.

The door was enormous.

Covered in ancient ice-blue runes.

A statue stood beside it.

A tall wizard with a long beard carved from crystal-like stone.

The statue held a staff pointed toward the door.

Sam looked closer.

The name carved at the base read:

Evergreen

Sam blinked.

"The Evergreen?"

The system chimed again.

Sam folded his arms.

"So the good stuff is locked."

He looked at the runes carefully.

They pulsed faintly.

Whatever was behind that door…

Was probably extremely valuable.

Sam smirked.

"Well."

He tapped the storm magic book he brought.

"Guess I've got studying to do."

He turned back toward the library shelves.

Hundreds.

Maybe thousands of magical books remained untouched.

Outside the dungeon…

The world of Ooo was growing more dangerous each day.

But deep underground…

Sam had discovered something far more powerful than monsters.

Knowledge.

And if he learned enough of it

The lightning wizard wandering the wasteland might one day become something far more terrifying.

Deep Beneath the Valley, The Library of Evergreen

Time passed quietly underground.

Days blurred together in the ancient library.

Sam had made the dusty chamber his temporary home. A corner of the library now held a small bed made from old cloaks and fabric he found in storage chests. Nearby sat a fire pit made from broken stone blocks where he occasionally cooked the meat he hunted from creatures near the dungeon entrance.

For the first time since the world collapsed, Sam had something close to routine.

Every day followed the same cycle.

Train.

Study.

Practice.

Sleep.

Repeat.

Week One

Sam stood in the center of the library hall.

Five mana spheres floated around him.

Each orb crackled with compressed lightning.

Sweat dripped down his forehead.

"Control… not power."

He exhaled slowly.

The spheres rotated around him in a slow orbit.

Faster.

Faster.

Then suddenly—

He snapped his fingers.

All five spheres shot forward like guided missiles.

BOOM

BOOM

BOOM

BOOM

BOOM

Stone pillars cracked under the explosions.

Sam lowered his hand.

His breathing slowed quickly.

Two weeks ago something like that would have drained him badly.

Now it felt natural.

Almost instinctive.

The system chimed.

Sam smiled slightly.

"Nice."

He opened his palm again.

Lightning appeared instantly.

No hesitation.

No instability.

The energy obeyed him like a trained animal.

He raised both hands.

Lightning formed into thin threads.

Then he shaped them.

Spears.

Blades.

Whips.

Each form lasted only a few seconds before dissolving back into sparks.

Sam nodded approvingly.

"Okay… that's starting to feel like breathing."

That had been his goal.

Not just casting spells.

But making magic as natural as movement.

And after days of repetition…

It finally was.

Week Two

The library walls now showed signs of Sam's relentless training.

Black scorch marks.

Broken stone pillars.

Fragments of shattered statues.

But Sam had improved tremendously.

Lightning now followed his will instantly.

He could create storm batteries, detonate mana sphere bombs, and control lightning strikes with terrifying accuracy.

Even his physical combat improved.

One afternoon he stood in the center of the chamber again.

This time with the Demon Eye Sword.

Three dungeon monsters had followed him into the library.

Grotesque creatures made of stone and bone.

They charged.

Sam didn't even move his feet.

A mana sphere appeared.

Then three more.

The spheres shot forward.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

The monsters collapsed instantly.

Sam sheathed the sword calmly.

"Yeah… definitely stronger."

He walked over to the library table and opened another storm magic book.

Two weeks of constant practice had made him significantly more dangerous.

And he wasn't even close to mastering everything yet.

Meanwhile…

Far Away Near the Coast

Wind blew across the gray ocean.

The shore was filled with activity.

Dozens of survivors moved across the rocky beach carrying wood, rope, and scrap metal.

Half-built boats rested on the sand.

Some were small fishing boats.

Others were larger vessels slowly being constructed.

The goal was clear.

Leave the mainland.

Escape the chaos spreading across the continent.

Near one of the fires sat Elena and the two children.

They had been traveling with the survivor group for nearly two weeks now.

The leader of the camp, a man wearing a brown animal hat, had welcomed them.

Everyone worked together.

Building.

Fishing.

Preparing to sail.

But even in this safer place…

Elena often looked toward the horizon.

Her expression distant.

One evening she sat on a piece of driftwood watching the ocean.

The children sat beside her.

"Mama… do you think Sam is okay?" the younger one asked softly.

Elena smiled gently.

"I think he's very okay."

She looked down at the sand.

"That man is unbelievably strong."

The older child nodded.

"He fought those monsters like a superhero."

Elena chuckled quietly.

"Yeah… he did."

But her smile slowly softened.

Her hand drifted to her stomach unconsciously.

Two weeks had passed.

And her body had begun changing slightly.

She hadn't told anyone yet.

But she knew.

A mother always knows.

Elena whispered quietly to herself.

"Sam… you idiot."

A small blush appeared on her face as she remembered that night.

The warmth of the blankets.

The quiet laughter.

His confident smile.

She sighed softly.

"You didn't even know…"

Her hand rested gently over her abdomen.

Inside…

A new life had already begun.

Sam's child.

Elena looked toward the sea again.

"I hope you're still alive out there."

The wind carried her quiet words across the waves.

The children leaned against her sides.

They missed him too.

The strange lightning wizard who had appeared out of nowhere and protected them.

But the world was too big now.

Too broken.

Finding someone again after losing them…

Was nearly impossible.

Meanwhile…

Beneath the Valley Library of Evergreen

Sam stood in the center of the chamber.

Lightning slowly spun around his body like a living storm.

He raised his hand.

The electricity condensed into a glowing sphere.

Stable.

Perfect.

He smiled slightly.

"Yeah…"

Magic truly did feel like breathing now.

But somewhere far away…

Across the continent…

A woman quietly carried his child.

And Sam had no idea.
