Chapter 38: Woodbury

"What are your plans? Join us, or leave Atlanta?"

Guillermo was silent for a moment before speaking. "Are these my only two choices?"

Caesar had no intention of forcing him to choose. He explained plainly.

"It's not that I'm only giving you these two choices. It's that you only have these two choices."

"The people who slaughtered your nursing home are a group of raiders who survive by killing their own kind and eating human flesh."

"They're from a community called Woodbury. After defeating you, they won't let you join them. They'll just kill all of you."

"What fought you was just one small Woodbury squad. No one knows how many more people they have."

Hearing this, Guillermo anxiously countered, "But what if the Woodbury community doesn't know intelligence about us?"

Caesar looked at Guillermo with surprise. "You don't think everyone in that squad died, do you?"

"Huh? Didn't they?" Guillermo froze. Given Martinez's situation, it would be very difficult to survive.

Caesar said, "The apocalypse has a very low margin for error. That squad had high combat training. The probability they survived and went back to report is quite high."

"So even if you could find another good base in Atlanta, I don't think you could survive in the city."

After listening, Guillermo thought for a moment and asked, "If I join you, I wouldn't have to leave the Atlanta area?"

Guillermo and his group had lived in the Atlanta area for many years. They didn't really want to leave.

"My ranch is near Atlanta."

"Aren't you afraid these people will come for revenge?" Guillermo had been ambushed by Martinez and his men, losing too many people. He was already somewhat fearful.

A confident smile rose on Caesar's face. "I'm not afraid of Woodbury."

"As long as I want, I can easily eliminate them."

Yes, Caesar and his people had enough power to eliminate enemies. And what do I have? Just bluffing. No guns or ammunition. Can only be slaughtered at will.

After thinking it through, Guillermo said, "I'll join you."

"But I have one requirement."

"Mm, go ahead." Caesar wasn't surprised and nodded.

Guillermo raised his head and spoke solemnly. "You can't treat us differently. You can't make us eat inferior food while forcing us to do the hardest work."

Guillermo understood clearly how terrible it felt to be discriminated against. Applied to the apocalypse, it could mean facing the most dangerous work while receiving the least reward.

He didn't want his brothers' lives casually thrown away.

Caesar said with certainty, "That's no problem. There's just one thing—they need to remain loyal."

"Don't worry, I understand."

Guillermo nodded.

After the deal was settled, Guillermo returned to the tent area to discuss with his companions.

...

The sun shone brightly. The weather was clear.

CDC underground level one.

Perhaps because they'd slept too comfortably, Rick and the others woke up later than usual, trickling into the cafeteria.

In the cafeteria, Lori had already prepared breakfast and kept it warm.

Rick entered the cafeteria and saw Lori washing last night's dishes. He walked up and kissed her gently. "Thank you for your hard work, dear."

"Eww~" Carl, waiting for his cereal, wore a disgusted expression, clearly unable to tolerate middle-aged sweetness.

"Hey!" Carl's extreme reaction prompted Lori to pinch his little face. "This is normal for middle-aged couples, OK?"

Carl could only nod. "Okay, okay."

Seeing his cereal was ready, he quickly grabbed the bowl and walked away.

This mischievous appearance finally showed some childlike energy. Lori thought.

Turning around, the couple's eyes met. Rick said, "Let him be."

The cafeteria was lively and harmonious. Everyone chatted and laughed while eating their ordinary breakfast.

When Jenner entered the cafeteria and saw the lively crowd at the table, he froze, still not quite processing it.

Lori greeted him with a smile. "Good morning, Dr. Jenner."

"I've made breakfast. Is there anything you'd like? If you don't want any of this, I can make you something new."

Lori's enthusiasm left Jenner at a loss. He quickly waved his hands. "No, no, I'll just eat this."

With that, Jenner sat in his seat.

Lori immediately brought over a plate with food on it, steaming hot.

While eating, Jenner thought for a moment and said, "After breakfast, I'll take you to tour underground level two."

"Oh!" Rick nodded in surprise. He'd thought Jenner wouldn't open level two to them, but he hadn't expected Jenner to be so generous.

Jenner understood his meaning and explained. "Level two does have many dangerous viruses. I won't take you to see those viruses."

"Just a simple tour. The best way to eliminate curiosity is to face it directly."

Hearing Jenner say this, several people at the table looked somewhat embarrassed.

They'd discussed level two yesterday. They were indeed very curious about it.

They hadn't expected Jenner to directly offer them a tour.

Rick glanced at them but said nothing. Such curiosity was perfectly normal.

Soon, almost everyone at the table had stopped eating, waiting for Jenner to take them on the tour.

But they waited and waited. One person at the table kept eating nonstop.

That person was Tate.

Tate didn't look particularly large, but her appetite was incredible. She kept eating voraciously.

Her eating manner wasn't pretty either. She looked like she hadn't eaten in two or three days.

"Tate." Rick hesitated, then turned his head to ask, "Weren't you full last night?"

Tate had an egg in her mouth. She shook her head blankly and said unclearly, "I was full."

"Tate, you're amazing. You can really eat!" Carl sincerely gave her a thumbs up. He'd never seen anyone who could eat more than Tate.

Tate blinked and said proudly, "I'm impressive, right!"

After waiting a while longer, everyone at the table was getting impatient.

Rick worried Jenner would lose patience about showing them around. He could only negotiate with Tate. "How about you eat here while we go tour?"

"If you want to know about it, we'll tell you when we get back."

"Eh~" Tate quickly swallowed a piece of sandwich in her mouth, nodding with bulging cheeks. "Let's go, I'm ready!"

"Alright then, let's go!"

Jenner stood up with relief. He really was getting impatient.

Rick and the others quickly got up and followed Jenner.

Tate, at the very back, casually grabbed two more sandwiches from the table—stuffed one in her mouth and wrapped the other in a bag, shoving it in her pocket.
