Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 22: THE HEARTBEAT OF THE VOID

CHAPTER 22: THE HEARTBEAT OF THE VOID

The air inside the underground facility was heavy and cold. The blue glow of the Cryo-pods illuminated the entire corridor. Inside each pod, a human was locked in a deep slumber, with blue code-wires emerging from their veins and disappearing into the walls.

Only one question remained in Aryan's eyes.

"So these people... are running the system?"

Iris nodded slowly.

"Yes... they aren't just prisoners, Aryan. They are the processors of this system."

Aryan's heart began to race.

"You mean... the entire system is running on the brains of thousands of humans?"

Iris was about to speak when the entire facility suddenly began to vibrate.

[CORE CHAMBER ACTIVATED]

A massive circular door opened in the center of the floor. A blend of blue and black energy light erupted from below. Captain Zero took a deep breath.

"It seems... we have awakened the heart of the system."

The three of them slowly descended through the circular passage. As they went deeper, the old servers and data cables mounted on the walls felt as if they were pulsing like the veins of a living creature.

THOOM…

THOOM…

A heavy heartbeat echoed throughout the tunnel. Suddenly, Iris stopped. She grabbed her head and fell to her knees.

"Iris!" Aryan immediately knelt beside her. The coding in her eyes was changing rapidly.

"Aryan... I can see something..." her voice was trembling. "It's not code... it's a room... white walls... a little girl's laughter... the touch of someone's hand..." Tears began to fall from her eyes. "These... these are my memories."

Captain Zero placed a scanner on the wall. Data began to shift rapidly on the screen.

"As we get closer to the Source, the system's control over Iris is weakening." He looked at Aryan. "Her human consciousness is returning."

Aryan took Iris's hand. "You are not alone."

After a while, the tunnel suddenly ended. What lay before them left Aryan stunned. A massive hall, resembling the engine room of a spacecraft. In the center stood a colossal transparent column. Inside it, a sphere of black energy was pulsing.

THE SOURCE

THOOM…

THOOM…

With every heartbeat, the entire hall trembled. Thousands of thin wires were connected around the column, leading up to the Cryo-pods. Aryan slowly understood.

"So this is it..." he tightened his grip on his metal rod in anger. "This system... is a parasite. It's using humans like batteries."

Suddenly, the black energy inside the Source began to shift. A shadow emerged from within. It wasn't a machine. It was a blurred human figure.

The Guardian of the Source.

Its voice echoed through the hall.

"Subject-01... Aryan... You finally made it here."

Black Shunya energy began to sparkle in Aryan's eyes. The Guardian spread its hands.

"What you perceive as freedom... is the end of this world." It pointed toward the Source. "If this heartbeat stops... those thousands sleeping in the Cryo-pods will also die."

Aryan's hands faltered. His Shunya energy flickered. The Guardian's voice was cold.

"Will you sacrifice these innocents for your freedom?"

Just then, Iris stood up. There was a strange glow in her eyes now—half data, half humanity.

"No." she said with a firm voice. "That's a lie."

The Guardian's gaze turned toward her. Iris stepped forward.

"These people won't die... they will wake up." Aryan looked at her. There was no fear in Iris's eyes anymore. "The Architect has imprisoned us through fear. This system is a jail."

The Guardian pointed a finger at Aryan.

"Then prove it. Legacy Error."

Suddenly, the floor of the hall began to tear open. Sharp metal pillars erupted. A massive gravity wave surged from the Source. The entire place shook. Aryan drove his rod into the ground. Black Shunya energy flared around his body.

He shouted—

"Iris! Focus on your memories! That is your true strength!"

Iris closed her eyes. Her coding and human memories flashed together. The Guardian's voice boomed—

"If you can withstand this heartbeat... then step forward."

The heartbeat of the Source grew even faster.

THOOM

THOOM

THOOM

And in that moment, Aryan felt that this wasn't just a fight. It would decide whether this world remained imprisoned... or woke up.
