Chapter 22 - chapter 22: The First Challenge

The valley was quiet now, but the air still thrummed with energy. Every nerve in my body screamed danger, every shadow seemed to breathe, and my mark pulsed like a heartbeat I could feel in my chest.

Lucien stayed close, silent, his presence a shield and a warning. "They're testing you," he said. "Not just the other packs—Kaiden included."

I glanced toward the forest edge. Kaiden was still there, his gray eyes sharp, unreadable. "Testing me? How?"

Lucien's lips pressed into a thin line. "By sending challenges your way. To see how you react. To see if you're truly… yours, or theirs."

I clenched my fists. "I'm mine."

"Good," Lucien said, "because the first test begins now."

A sharp roar tore through the valley. A pack of rogue wolves emerged, larger than before, coordinated, their eyes glowing with predatory intent. They didn't hesitate—they lunged straight for me.

My mark flared instinctively. White light exploded outward, blasting the first wave back. Trees shook, leaves scattered, and the air itself seemed to vibrate with power.

One rogue lunged again. I focused, letting the energy flow like a river under control this time. Shockwaves rippled outward, knocking him off balance. Another tried to flank me—he didn't get close.

Kaiden's voice cut across the valley, low and dangerous. "Not bad, Omega. But you'll need more than raw strength to survive me—and them."

I flinched at the words, my heart hammering. It wasn't just a warning; it was a challenge. A claim. And the pull between us tightened in ways I hadn't expected.

Lucien moved beside me, calm as ever. "Control. Don't let emotion dictate power. Let it guide your strategy."

I nodded, raising my arms. The light burst brighter, hitting the rogue pack like a wave of pure force. Wolves scattered, yelps of fear echoing across the valley. Only a few remained, cautious now.

I breathed heavily, the mark dimming, pulsing with anticipation. I realized then: this was more than survival. Every attack, every threat, tested me. Shaped me. And Kaiden—he wasn't just watching. He was learning what I could do.

The last rogue backed away, fear plain in his eyes. I lowered my arms, hands trembling, chest heaving.

Lucien gave a faint smile. "Well done. First challenge… survived."

I glanced toward the forest. Kaiden's gaze lingered on me longer than necessary, eyes dark, wolf stirring beneath the surface. Possession. Curiosity. Something more.

And I realized: surviving wasn't enough. I had to rise. To become unstoppable.
