After that, they launched into a discussion that went completely over my head. It felt like they were speaking in some secret code, territories, shipments, percentages, alliances. I didn't understand a single thing, so how could I possibly pretend to be interested?
"You look uninterested, Mrs Volkov."
One of the men sitting across from me pointed it out bluntly. Anyone could see I wasn't paying attention, my eyes kept drifting, my fingers tapping restlessly on the table.
"You could take some drinks or look around with Maria,"
Mark suggested smoothly.
That sounded like the perfect escape. I nodded and followed the woman in the elegant red dress out of the room. Instead of staying in the main hall, Maria led me toward another set of golden doors. I trailed behind her quietly, already regretting the decision to come.
