Chapter 23 - The Unexpected Pair

The living room smelled of expensive coffee and quiet observation.

The television screen had gone dark, but no one had really moved on.

Merlin and Jisoo's date still lingered—in the way people sat,in the way they looked at each other,in the silence between conversations.

Luna stirred her latte slowly, eyes narrowed.

"They looked… comfortable," she said."Almost too comfortable for a first date."

Minho leaned back with a lazy grin.

"Or maybe they're just the only ones not overthinking everything."

He glanced across the room.

"Did you see Jisoo laugh? That wasn't for the cameras."

Kiara didn't respond.

She was watching Jisoo—quietly, carefully.

Like she had just started paying attention.

Merlin sat in an armchair, posture relaxed, expression neutral.

But she felt it.

That gaze.

Before she even looked up.

Leon stood near the doorway, ready to leave.

Silent. Still. Watching.

Their eyes met for a split second.

It wasn't long enough to understand.

But long enough to feel something shift.

Merlin looked away first.

Their exit had none of yesterday's chaos.

No teasing.No noise.No interruptions.

Just quiet.

Aria stepped forward first, her movements composed and precise.

Leon followed, hands in his pockets, expression unreadable.

"You're quieter than usual today," Aria said as they reached the car.

Leon opened the door for her.

"I'm always quiet."

Aria tilted her head slightly.

"There's a difference between being quiet… and being somewhere else."

Leon didn't respond.

But he didn't deny it either.

The gallery was wide and open, almost too quiet.

Every step echoed softly against polished floors.

They stood in front of a massive blue canvas—simple, abstract, almost empty.

"Do you like it?" Leon asked.

Aria studied it for a moment.

"I like that it doesn't try to impress anyone."

She shifted her gaze slightly.

"It just exists."

Leon nodded once.

"That's rare."

They walked deeper into the gallery.

The space changed.

Tall iron pillars formed a narrow passage, shadows stretching between them.

The air felt heavier here.

More enclosed.

Aria's voice softened.

"Most people here are performing."

Leon glanced at her.

"They are."

"They've practiced their reactions. Their timing."

She paused briefly.

"But you look like you're waiting for an exit."

Leon let out a quiet breath.

"Is it that obvious?"

"To me? Yes."

They stopped between the pillars.

For the first time, Leon looked directly at her.

"You don't seem surprised."

"I'm not."

Aria held his gaze steadily.

"You don't belong in environments where everything is controlled."

Leon studied her for a moment.

"Then why are you here?" he asked.

Aria gave a faint, knowing smile.

"To see what people do when control slips."

He looked away first.

Toward the shadows stretching across the floor.

"I've spent years making the right choices."

His voice remained steady.

"Career. Reputation. Image."

Aria listened without interrupting.

"So I came here," he continued,"to see what happens when I stop doing that."

She stepped a little closer, still keeping her distance.

"And?"

Leon's jaw tightened slightly.

"I think I found something I wasn't supposed to."

Back at the mansion, no one was joking anymore.

Even Luna had gone quiet.

"They're not even flirting," she whispered.

Minho leaned forward.

"They don't need to."

Kiara spoke without looking away from the screen.

"She's getting him to talk. No one else has."

Jisoo sat on the rug, elbows resting on his knees.

His eyes stayed fixed on the screen.

"He's not distant," he said quietly."He's choosing what to show."

Behind him, Merlin stood near the sofa.

Arms folded.

Still.

Watching.

Leon's voice through the speakers sounded different.

Lower.

More careful.

Not guarded.

Just… selective.

And that difference unsettled her.

The sky had turned deep shades of purple and gold.

The city stretched endlessly below them.

Aria stood near the railing, the wind brushing through her hair.

"Are you here to find something?" she asked quietly.

Leon stood beside her.

"Or someone?"

He didn't answer immediately.

The silence stretched.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Even the cameras seemed to wait.

"I thought I came here with a reason," Leon said finally.

His voice was lower now.

"But now it feels like I'm watching myself make a mistake."

Aria didn't react.

She simply watched him.

"You're not confused," she said.

"You're aware."

Leon let out a small breath.

"Doesn't make it easier."

She turned slightly toward him.

"You're not the kind of person who makes impulsive decisions."

"No."

"But you're not stopping this one either."

Leon didn't respond.

Because he didn't need to.

When they returned, the energy in the mansion shifted immediately.

"So?" Luna called out from the stairs."Was it intense or just quiet staring?"

Aria smiled faintly as she walked past.

"It was… honest."

She didn't stop.

But as she passed Merlin—

She gave her a brief, knowing look.

And kept walking.

Leon stayed behind for a moment.

He walked toward the kitchen.

Then paused.

Merlin stood near the counter.

Close.

Too close.

For a second—

Neither of them moved.

No words.

No expressions.

Just that same unspoken tension.

Leon finally looked at her.

Not the way he usually did.

Not analytical.

Not distant.

Something quieter.

Something unsettled.

Then he turned—

And walked away.

Merlin didn't move.

Her fingers tightened slightly around the glass in her hand.

She had spent the last few days thinking she understood him.

His silence.

His distance.

His reactions.

But the version she had just seen—

The one Aria had spoken to—

That wasn't the same person.

And the part that bothered her most—

Wasn't that he had changed.

It was that she hadn't been the one to see it first.
