Chapter 3 - The Secrets Behind His Silence

The morning sunlight crept slowly through the thin curtains of the bedroom, painting soft golden lines across the white walls. Amara stirred in bed, her eyes slowly opening as the unfamiliar room came into focus again.

It had been three days since her sudden marriage to a man she barely knew.

Three days of awkward silences.

Three days of unanswered questions.

Three days of living with a stranger.

She turned her head slightly and noticed that the other side of the bed was empty.

As always.

Daniel had already left.

A small sigh escaped her lips as she sat up, pulling the blanket around her shoulders. The house was large and beautiful, but it felt cold… almost lonely.

Amara glanced at the bedside clock.

6:12 AM.

He always left early.

And he always returned late.

She wondered what kind of work required someone to disappear so quietly every day.

Sliding out of bed, Amara walked toward the window and pushed the curtains aside. Outside, the morning in Lagos was already alive with movement. Cars honked in the distance and street vendors shouted as they prepared for the day.

Yet inside the mansion, everything was silent.

Too silent.

After showering and getting dressed, Amara walked downstairs to the kitchen. To her surprise, breakfast had already been prepared and neatly arranged on the table.

Toast.

Eggs.

Tea.

And beside the plate was a small folded note.

Her heart skipped slightly as she picked it up.

The handwriting was strong and careful.

"Eat before it gets cold. — Daniel."

Amara stared at the message for a long moment.

It was simple.

But strangely thoughtful.

"Who are you really?" she murmured softly.

She sat down and began eating slowly, her thoughts wandering. The man she had married was polite… distant… mysterious.

He never touched her.

He never asked personal questions.

He never explained anything.

It was as if they were two strangers sharing the same house… tied together by a marriage neither of them seemed ready to talk about.

After breakfast, Amara decided she couldn't sit around all day.

She needed answers.

Walking through the large hallway, she began exploring parts of the mansion she hadn't seen before. Most of the rooms were spotless and neatly organized, but they looked unused… almost like a hotel.

Finally, she reached a door at the end of the corridor.

It was slightly open.

Curiosity pulled her forward.

She pushed the door gently.

Inside was a study.

Bookshelves lined the walls from floor to ceiling. A large wooden desk stood near the window, covered with files and papers.

Amara stepped inside carefully.

Something about the room felt different… personal.

She moved closer to the desk and noticed a framed photograph lying face down.

Slowly, she picked it up.

Her breath caught in her throat.

The photo showed Daniel standing beside an older woman. They were both smiling warmly at the camera.

The woman looked kind… motherly.

But what caught Amara's attention was the date written in the corner of the frame.

Two years ago.

She tilted her head slightly.

"Your mother?" she whispered.

Before she could think further, she heard the sudden sound of a car pulling into the driveway outside.

Her heart jumped.

Daniel.

Quickly placing the photo back where she found it, Amara hurried out of the study and returned to the living room.

Moments later, the front door opened.

Daniel stepped inside.

He looked surprised to see her standing there.

"You're home early," Amara said cautiously.

Daniel removed his coat slowly.

"Yes."

His eyes studied her briefly, as if trying to read something.

"Did you need something?" he asked.

Amara hesitated.

There were a thousand questions on her mind.

But she didn't know where to start.

Finally, she spoke.

"What do you do for work?"

Daniel paused.

For a moment, it seemed like he might ignore the question.

But then he answered calmly.

"I run a company."

"What kind of company?"

"Security."

That word made her blink.

Security?

Before she could ask another question, Daniel walked toward the kitchen.

"I'll make dinner," he said.

Amara frowned slightly.

"You don't have to cook every time."

"I don't mind."

His tone was polite but distant.

She followed him into the kitchen, leaning against the counter as she watched him chop vegetables with quiet precision.

"Daniel," she said softly.

He didn't look up.

"Yes?"

"Why did you agree to marry me?"

The knife stopped moving.

For a few seconds, the kitchen became completely silent.

Daniel slowly placed the knife down and wiped his hands with a cloth.

Then he turned to face her.

"Your father needed help," he said simply.

Amara's eyes narrowed.

"That can't be the only reason."

Daniel held her gaze.

"You're safe here."

"That's not what I asked."

Another pause filled the room.

Then Daniel spoke again, his voice lower.

"There are things happening around your family that you don't understand."

A chill ran down Amara's spine.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel looked toward the window for a moment before answering.

"Your father made enemies."

"Enemies?"

"Yes."

The word hung heavily in the air.

Amara felt confusion building inside her chest.

"What does that have to do with marrying me?"

Daniel's expression softened slightly.

"More than you realize."

Amara opened her mouth to speak again, but suddenly the sound of a phone ringing cut through the room.

Daniel pulled his phone from his pocket and looked at the screen.

His expression changed instantly.

Serious.

Focused.

Without a word, he stepped away and answered the call.

"Yes."

Amara couldn't hear the other person's voice, but she could see the tension growing in Daniel's face.

"What happened?" he asked sharply.

Silence.

Then his jaw tightened.

"I'm on my way."

He hung up.

"What is it?" Amara asked nervously.

Daniel grabbed his coat.

"I have to go."

"But you just came back!"

"I know."

He walked toward the door.

"Daniel," Amara called after him.

He stopped.

For a moment, he looked back at her.

Something in his eyes seemed conflicted… almost worried.

"Lock the doors," he said quietly.

Then he left.

The sound of the front door closing echoed through the house.

Amara stood there, her heart pounding.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Hours passed.

Night slowly covered the city.

Still, Daniel didn't return.

Amara sat alone in the living room, staring at her phone.

Should she call him?

Would he even answer?

Suddenly—

A loud noise came from outside.

Her heart jumped.

She stood up slowly and walked toward the window.

A black car had parked across the street.

Its engine was still running.

Inside the car, she could see two men.

Watching the house.

Amara's breath became shallow.

Her mind instantly remembered Daniel's warning.

Lock the doors.

Fear crawled up her spine.

She quickly stepped away from the window and checked the front door.

Locked.

The back door.

Locked.

All the windows.

Locked.

Still, something didn't feel right.

She turned off the lights in the living room and slowly peeked through the curtain again.

The car was still there.

Waiting.

Watching.

"Who are they?" she whispered.

Her heart raced faster.

Suddenly—

Her phone vibrated.

The screen lit up.

Daniel.

She answered immediately.

"Daniel!"

"Listen carefully," his voice said urgently.

Amara's stomach twisted.

"What is happening?"

"Are you alone?"

"Yes."

"Good."

The relief in his voice was brief.

Then he continued.

"There's a chance someone might come to the house tonight."

Amara's blood ran cold.

"What?!"

"I need you to stay calm."

"How can I stay calm?! There are men outside watching the house!"

Daniel was silent for a second.

"You saw them?"

"Yes!"

"Don't open the door for anyone."

Her voice trembled.

"Daniel… who are they?"

Another pause.

Then he finally said the words that made her heart drop.

"They're the reason I married you."

The line went silent.

Amara stood frozen in the dark living room.

Her mind struggled to understand.

Outside, the black car's headlights suddenly turned off.

The men inside stepped out.

And began walking toward the house.

Amara's hands shook.

"Daniel…" she whispered into the phone.

But the call had already ended.

And now—

She was alone.

With danger coming to her door.
