Chapter 4 - Secrets Behind the Smile

The morning sun crept slowly through the thin curtains of Amara's room, casting golden rays across the floor. She lay awake on the bed, staring at the ceiling. Sleep had barely visited her that night.

Her mind was crowded with thoughts.

Marriage.

A stranger.

And the mysterious man she now called her husband.

Adrian.

She turned her head and looked at the empty space beside her on the bed. Adrian had already left the room earlier that morning. She had heard the faint sound of the door closing, followed by the distant noise of a car starting outside the house.

Amara sighed softly.

Everything about him felt distant and unfamiliar.

Even though they were married, it still felt like she was living in a stranger's house with a stranger's life.

She sat up slowly and wrapped her arms around her knees.

"Why did you marry me?" she whispered to herself.

The question had haunted her since the day of the wedding.

Adrian was wealthy, handsome, and successful. He could have married any woman he wanted.

Yet he chose her.

A girl he barely knew.

A girl whose life had suddenly been thrown into chaos.

Her thoughts were interrupted by a gentle knock on the door.

"Madam?" a soft female voice called from outside.

Amara blinked.

"Come in," she replied.

The door opened, and the house maid, Esther, stepped inside with a polite smile.

"Good morning, Madam," Esther said, carrying a tray of breakfast.

Amara forced a small smile.

"Good morning."

Esther placed the tray on the table beside the bed. The aroma of freshly made tea and toasted bread filled the room.

"Master Adrian asked me to bring this to you," Esther said.

Amara frowned slightly.

"He did?"

Esther nodded.

"He left early for work, but he said you should eat."

Amara looked at the tray quietly.

A strange feeling stirred in her chest.

Adrian was cold and distant most of the time, yet sometimes he did small things like this.

It confused her.

"Thank you," she said softly.

Esther bowed slightly before leaving the room.

When the door closed again, Amara slowly reached for the cup of tea.

The warmth spread through her hands.

For a moment, she wondered what Adrian was really like beneath that calm and unreadable expression.

Meanwhile, across the city, Adrian sat inside his office on the top floor of a towering glass building.

The large windows overlooked the busy streets below.

His desk was covered with files and documents, but his mind wasn't focused on work.

Instead, he was staring at his phone.

On the screen was a photograph.

Amara.

It had been taken secretly during their wedding ceremony.

Her eyes had looked uncertain that day, filled with questions she didn't dare ask.

Adrian's fingers tightened slightly around the phone.

"I'm sorry," he murmured quietly.

A knock sounded on his office door.

"Come in," he said.

The door opened, and his assistant, Daniel, walked inside carrying a folder.

"Sir, the meeting with the investors is in thirty minutes," Daniel said.

Adrian nodded.

"Alright."

Daniel hesitated for a moment before speaking again.

"There's… something else you should know."

Adrian looked up.

"What is it?"

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Someone has been asking questions about your marriage."

Adrian's expression hardened instantly.

"Who?"

Daniel placed the folder on the desk.

"We're not sure yet, but the inquiries are coming from someone connected to the Moretti family."

Adrian's eyes darkened.

The Moretti family.

One of the most powerful and dangerous families in the city.

He leaned back slowly in his chair.

"So they've started moving already."

Daniel nodded nervously.

"What should we do?"

Adrian stood up and walked toward the window.

The city looked peaceful from above, but he knew the truth.

Beneath the calm surface, power and greed controlled everything.

"Keep watching them," Adrian said quietly.

Daniel nodded.

"Yes, sir."

But as Daniel turned to leave, Adrian spoke again.

"And Daniel…"

"Yes?"

"Make sure Amara is safe."

Daniel looked surprised but nodded.

"Of course."

When the door closed, Adrian remained standing by the window.

His reflection stared back at him in the glass.

"You deserve a normal life," he murmured softly.

"But unfortunately… your life is now tied to mine."

Back at the mansion, Amara decided to explore the house.

She had spent most of her time inside her room since the wedding, too nervous to wander around.

But today felt different.

The house was enormous.

Long hallways stretched endlessly, decorated with expensive paintings and elegant furniture.

Amara walked slowly, observing everything with curiosity.

Suddenly, she heard voices coming from a nearby room.

She paused.

The door was slightly open.

Inside, two maids were whispering.

"…I heard Master Adrian married her suddenly," one of them said.

"Yes, but no one knows why," the other replied.

Amara's heart tightened.

She didn't want to listen, but her feet refused to move.

"I heard it has something to do with the Moretti family," the first maid whispered.

"The Morettis?" the other gasped. "That family is dangerous!"

"Exactly. Some people think the marriage was for protection."

Amara's breath caught.

Protection?

Protection from what?

Before she could think further, the floor creaked beneath her foot.

The maids fell silent instantly.

Amara quickly walked away before they could see her.

Her heart pounded loudly.

Protection?

Was that the reason Adrian married her?

But why would she need protection from such a powerful family?

None of it made sense.

Her mind was filled with questions again.

Later that evening, Adrian returned home.

Amara was sitting quietly in the living room reading a book when she heard the front door open.

Her eyes lifted.

Adrian walked inside, loosening his tie.

For a moment, their eyes met.

An awkward silence filled the room.

"Welcome back," Amara said softly.

Adrian nodded.

"Thank you."

He placed his briefcase on the table and looked at her carefully.

"You seem more relaxed today."

Amara shrugged slightly.

"I explored the house."

Adrian almost smiled.

"Did you get lost?"

She gave a small laugh.

"Almost."

The atmosphere between them felt lighter than usual.

But Amara's thoughts returned to what she had overheard earlier.

She hesitated.

"Adrian…"

"Yes?"

She looked directly at him.

"Why did you marry me?"

The question hung heavily in the air.

Adrian's expression froze.

For several seconds, he didn't speak.

Amara waited patiently.

Finally, Adrian sighed and sat down across from her.

"It's… complicated."

Amara frowned.

"Complicated how?"

Adrian looked at her quietly.

There were many secrets he couldn't reveal yet.

Not until he knew she would be safe.

"You'll understand one day," he said.

Amara's disappointment showed clearly on her face.

"That's not really an answer."

"I know."

She stood up slowly.

"I don't like feeling like a stranger in my own marriage."

Adrian felt a sharp sting of guilt.

"You're not a stranger."

Amara looked at him sadly.

"Then stop treating me like one."

With that, she walked toward the staircase and disappeared upstairs.

Adrian remained seated in silence.

Her words echoed in his mind.

Then suddenly—

His phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Yes?"

Daniel's voice came through the line, tense and urgent.

"Sir… we have a problem."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"What happened?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Someone from the Moretti family was seen near your house tonight."

Adrian's entire body went still.

"Who?"

"We couldn't confirm yet, but—"

Adrian cut him off.

"Double the security around the mansion."

"Yes, sir."

Adrian ended the call slowly.

Then he looked toward the staircase where Amara had disappeared.

His jaw tightened.

"They're already getting closer."

Upstairs, Amara stood by the window in her room.

The night sky stretched endlessly above the city.

She hugged herself tightly.

This marriage felt like a puzzle with missing pieces.

And the more she searched for answers, the more confused she became.

But deep inside her heart, she felt something else too.

A strange connection with Adrian.

Even though he was distant.

Even though he kept secrets.

She sensed that there was something painful hidden behind his calm smile.

Something he was protecting her from.

But what?

As she turned away from the window, she didn't notice the black car parked quietly outside the mansion gate.

Inside the car, a man watched the house carefully.

His eyes were cold and calculating.

He spoke into his phone.

"Yes… she's here."

A pause.

Then he continued.

"And Adrian Romano is protecting her."

Another pause.

The man smiled darkly.

"Should we proceed with the plan?"

The voice on the other end of the call answered.

"Yes."

The man ended the call and looked at the mansion again.

"Let the game begin."
