Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: The One That Learned

The creature didn't rush.

That alone—

made it different.

It stepped forward slowly.

Each movement deliberate.

Heavy.

Controlled.

Sora narrowed his eyes.

"…Yeah. I don't like this one."

Johan didn't respond.

His focus sharpened.

"…It's observing us," Johan said quietly.

The creature tilted its head again.

As if confirming that statement.

Then—

it moved.

Not a blur.

Not reckless.

A single step—

and it was already within range.

"—Fast!"

Sora reacted instantly.

He raised his blade—

fire igniting along its edge.

CLANG.

The impact exploded through the cave.

But—

this time—

Sora didn't get pushed back.

Instead—

they locked.

The creature's arm held his blade in place.

Its strength—

stable.

Measured.

"…Not bad," Sora muttered.

Then—

his eyes widened slightly.

The creature adjusted.

It twisted its body—

redirecting the force.

Sora's stance broke—

just for a moment.

That moment—

was enough.

"Back—!"

Johan's aether surged—

a precise force slamming into the creature's side.

It moved.

But not far.

Just enough.

Sora slid back, regaining his footing.

"…It copied that," Johan said.

Sora glanced at him.

"…What?"

Johan's eyes didn't leave the creature.

"…Your movement."

Silence.

Sora looked back at it.

The creature's stance shifted.

Slightly lower.

More balanced.

Just like his.

"…You're kidding me."

The creature stepped forward again.

Faster this time.

Sora moved to meet it—

but—

It feinted.

Just like he did before.

"…Tch!"

Sora barely dodged—

the strike grazing past him and slamming into the cave wall.

Stone shattered.

Dust filled the air.

Johan moved instantly.

Aether gathered—

focused—

"Don't let it control the pace."

He released it—

not as a blast—

but as pressure.

The ground beneath the creature shifted—

forcing its footing off-balance.

Sora saw it.

"…Got you."

He dashed in—

fire igniting again.

Stronger this time.

Faster.

He swung—

The creature blocked.

But—

Sora didn't stop.

He twisted mid-motion—

adjusting—

changing angle—

The flames flared—

CRACK.

The armor fractured.

But—

not fully.

The creature stepped back.

Stable.

Its eyes flickered.

Analyzing.

Learning.

"…It's getting used to it," Johan said.

Sora grinned.

"…Then we don't repeat it."

The creature moved again—

faster.

Sharper.

It struck—

Sora blocked—

but this time—

The force pushed him back.

"…Stronger too?"

Johan stepped in—

aether intercepting—

redirecting the force away from Sora.

"…Not stronger."

A pause.

"…More efficient."

Silence.

Sora wiped sweat from his face.

"…So it learns, adapts, and hits harder."

He smirked.

"…That's annoying."

The creature lunged again—

but this time—

both of them moved together.

Sora attacked from the front—

fast.

Aggressive.

Johan circled—

controlling the space—

limiting movement.

The creature reacted—

blocking Sora—

but—

Johan's aether struck from the side.

Forcing it to turn.

That moment—

Sora stepped in.

Closer than before.

"…You're not the only one learning."

Fire surged.

Not wild.

Not unstable.

Focused.

For a brief moment—

just one—

His flames obeyed him.

He swung.

SHATTER.

A large section of the creature's armor broke apart.

It staggered.

For the first time.

"…Now," Johan said.

Aether gathered.

Compressed.

Sora stepped back—

just enough.

Johan released it.

A focused strike—

directly into the fractured area.

BOOM.

The creature was thrown back—

slamming into the cave wall.

Cracks spread across its body.

Its movements slowed.

But—

it didn't fall.

Instead—

it stood again.

Slowly.

Its eyes flickered.

Not dimming.

But—

changing.

"…It's still going?" Sora muttered.

Johan's expression hardened.

"…Because it hasn't reached its limit yet."

The core behind them pulsed.

Stronger.

Faster.

The creature's body reacted.

The cracks—

stopped spreading.

Something inside it—

stabilized.

"…Tch," Sora clicked his tongue.

"…So it's connected to that thing."

Johan nodded.

"…If we don't stop the source—"

The creature moved again.

Faster than before.

"—We'll keep fighting it forever."

Sora grinned.

"…Then we break it."

Johan glanced at him.

"…Together."

The cave trembled slightly.

The creature charged.

Sora stepped forward—

fire blazing.

Johan raised his hand—

aether ready.

Behind them—

the core pulsed wildly.

And between them—

the battle reached its peak.

Because now—

it wasn't just about defeating the enemy.

It was about ending what created it.

Before it created more.
