Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Hunted

The core pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

faster.

The entire cave responded.

Not violently.

Not suddenly.

But… deliberately.

Sora felt it first.

A pressure crawling under his skin, like something invisible tightening around his chest.

"…The hell is that…"

Johan didn't answer.

His eyes were locked on the core.

"…It's accelerating."

Crack.

A sound echoed from deeper within the cave.

Then—

another.

Scrape.

Drag.

Thud.

Sora slowly turned his head toward the tunnels branching from the chamber.

"…Don't tell me…"

Something moved in the dark.

One.

Then another.

Shapes began to crawl out.

Not charging.

Not rushing.

Emerging.

"…You've got to be kidding me," Sora muttered.

Creatures.

But not like before.

Some dragged themselves forward with only their arms, their lower bodies missing.

Some stood—but uneven, their limbs mismatched, twisted at unnatural angles.

Some had armor half-formed, cracking as they moved.

One creature's jaw hung loose—

yet it still growled.

Another had its chest caved in—

yet it still walked.

The smell—

became unbearable.

Rot.

Burn.

Blood.

"…This is messed up," Sora said, his voice low now.

No grin.

No excitement.

Johan stepped forward slightly.

Aether rising around him.

"…They're not acting on instinct."

The creatures didn't rush.

They spread.

Surrounding.

Positioning.

Sora's eyes narrowed.

"…They're… boxing us in?"

Johan's voice sharpened.

"…No."

A pause.

"…They're herding us."

Silence.

The larger creature—the one from before—

stood in the back.

Watching.

Waiting.

"…That thing…" Sora muttered.

"…It's controlling them."

Johan shook his head slightly.

"…Not directly."

His eyes flicked to the core.

"…But it's using it."

The pulse—

grew stronger.

The creatures moved.

Not all at once.

One lunged.

Sora reacted instantly—

fire bursting along his blade.

"Get off me—!"

FWOOSH.

Flames tore through the creature—

burning it apart.

But—

another took its place.

Then another.

"…They're not stopping!" Sora snapped.

Johan moved—

his aether pressing outward—

forcing multiple creatures back at once.

"Don't waste energy," Johan said sharply.

"…They're trying to wear us down."

Sora clicked his tongue.

"…No shit!"

A creature lunged from the side—

Sora ducked—

countered—

burned it—

Another came from behind—

Johan intercepted—

aether striking it mid-air.

"…Stay focused!" Johan called.

Sora grinned slightly—

but it wasn't excitement.

"…I am!"

The swarm tightened.

Not chaotic.

Coordinated.

Every movement—

deliberate.

Every attack—

timed.

Sora stepped back slightly—

just enough.

That was the opening.

Three creatures lunged at once.

"…Tch!"

Sora ignited his blade—

but this time—

his flames surged too wildly.

BOOM.

The explosion pushed them back—

but—

"…Damn it—!"

His footing slipped.

Just slightly.

On the other side—

Johan was surrounded.

Five.

No—

seven creatures.

He raised his hand—

aether compressing—

controlling space—

But—

it wasn't enough.

"…Too many…"

His control—

perfect as it was—

was being stretched.

The creatures didn't break through.

But they didn't need to.

They stalled him.

Exactly as planned.

Sora's eyes widened slightly.

"…Johan—!"

Too late.

The large creature—

moved.

It vanished.

No sound.

No warning.

Just—

gone.

Johan's eyes snapped open.

"…Behind—!"

Sora turned.

Too slow.

It was already there.

Right behind him.

Its arm—

raised.

Then—

CRASH.

Impact.

Sora's body slammed into the cave wall.

Hard.

Stone shattered.

Blood splattered.

"…Ghh—!"

His vision blurred.

The fire around his blade—

flickered.

Then—

nearly died.

"…Shit…"

He tried to stand—

but his body didn't respond properly.

Pain shot through his ribs.

"…That… hurt…"

Across the chamber—

Johan froze.

"…Sora—"

That moment—

was enough.

The creature moved again.

This time—

toward Johan.

Fast.

Too fast.

Johan raised his hand—

aether forming—

but—

His timing—

was off.

Just slightly.

BOOM.

The impact hit his side.

He was thrown across the cave—

slamming into the ground.

His control—

broke.

The aether around him—

shattered.

"…Ghh—!"

For the first time—

his breathing—

was uneven.

"…Damn it…"

The creatures stopped.

Not attacking.

Waiting.

The large one stood between them now.

Watching.

Measuring.

"…It planned that…" Johan muttered.

Sora coughed—

blood hitting the ground.

"…Yeah…"

He laughed weakly.

"…Smart bastard…"

Silence filled the cave.

The core pulsed again.

Stronger.

Faster.

The creatures twitched—

ready to move again.

Sora pushed himself up.

Slowly.

His body screamed in pain.

"…Tch…"

He wiped the blood from his mouth.

His eyes—

burned.

"…You think… I'm done?"

A flicker.

Fire—

returned.

Stronger.

Wilder.

Unstable—

but furious.

Across from him—

Johan stood as well.

Slow.

Shaking—

but standing.

His breathing uneven.

"…I lost control…"

His hand trembled slightly.

"…Unacceptable…"

But then—

his eyes changed.

Sharper.

Colder.

"…Then I'll just take it back."

Aether surged.

Not calm.

Not gentle.

But intense.

For the first time—

Johan's control—

wasn't perfect.

But it was stronger.

Sora grinned.

"…Heh…"

Blood still dripping.

Fire raging.

"…Now we're talking."

The creature watched.

Silent.

But its eyes flickered.

Because something had changed.

These two—

weren't breaking.

They were adapting.

The same way it did.

Sora stepped forward.

Fire blazing.

Johan raised his hand.

Aether roaring.

"…Round two," Sora muttered.

Johan nodded.

"…This time—"

Their eyes locked onto the creature.

"…we hunt it."

The cave trembled.

The swarm shifted.

And in that moment—

the hunters—

and the hunted—

became one and the same.
