Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: plague doctor

Inside the airport terminal built above Containment Center No. 1;

It was neat and bright, with a stark black and white contrast, typical of Umbrella's interior design style.

A sturdy male Officer in his thirties, wearing a black military uniform, was standing in the terminal waiting.

Captain Auston Lance, the supervisor in charge of Containment Center No. 1, was one of the UBCS Officers assimilated by William Russell.

Dozens of Security Personnel also stood to the side, guarding Lance.

They wore dark blue combat uniforms imprinted with the red and white Umbrella logo, helmets, and masks, with an array of weapons and equipment hanging from their bulletproof vests.

The equipment of the Security Personnel was superior to the standard-issue armies of countries around the World, but it was far behind that of the UBCS and USS.

One must know that the UBCS combat uniforms were semi-sealed, possessed good cut-resistant properties, and the combat ratings of the UBCS were all above ninety.

And how did they compare to the USS?

There was no comparison.

Every USS operative was forged by throwing money at them; they were simply not comparable to 'grunts' like the Security Personnel.

...

Similarly, Victor, who was responsible for escorting the plague doctor, along with five other UBCS members and those three Tyrants, were also waiting here.

Everyone stood behind the airport jet bridge exit; an atmosphere of tension and excitement permeated the terminal.

Because connected to the jet bridge was none other than the private jet of the Umbrella boss, William Russell.

"Clack, clack—"

Soon, the sound of many footsteps came from the jet bridge.

Alpha, led by Hank, walked out first, standing in a fan formation at the exit.

William, wearing a trench coat, and the casually dressed Halsey were the last to come through the jet bridge into the terminal.

Seeing this, the Security Personnel and UBCS all saluted loudly: "Boss!"

"Hmm." William nodded and signaled, "At ease."

"Yes!"

Immediately after, William's gaze focused on Victor.

Victor had short hair, was in his thirties, had a resolute face, and possessed a natural military bearing.

Then, William didn't speak with Dilson first, but instead came before Victor and the other UBCS members to praise them:

"Captain, it was indeed the right choice to entrust the first containment mission to you all. I am proud of you."

"Boss, this is our duty!" Victor and the UBCS all puffed out their chests in response.

"Heh."

William smiled slightly, reached out to pat Victor on the shoulder, and then scanned the UBCS members, saying:

"Given your company's outstanding performance, you're surely not interested in bonuses, so I shall bestow upon your company the title of 'Removers'."

"Yes!"

Hearing William say this, the UBCS seemed even more excited.

Indeed, having been assimilated by the system, they had little interest in money and held absolute loyalty to William.

And being able to receive a name personally bestowed by the boss for their company was enough for them to brag about among personnel of all levels for a lifetime.

William looked at Victor again and said in a low voice: "Captain, from now on you are a Major and the operational Commander of the West.

Also, those three Tyrants are handed over to you Removers. Do not let me down."

"This..."

Viktor was stunned for a moment, but quickly reacted and said solemnly: "Boss, please rest assured."

"Ugh ah~"

At this moment, Halsey covered her mouth and yawned, then said lazily in a urging tone:

"Boss William, hurry up, I can't wait anymore~."

"You, oh you." William shook his head helplessly.

Then, he took her to Lance and said: "Alright Captain, take us down."

"Yes, Boss."

Lance, who had been waiting for a long time, had no complaints and led the way for William, Halsey, and the others.

After receiving their reward, Victor and the UBCS commanded the three Tyrants to leave the terminal and head to the CH-53E Super Stallion parked outside to return to Alberta.

...

Due to the limited space in the elevator, only Hank and six other Alpha team members accompanied William and the others.

Not long after, everyone arrived at the underground containment facility, which had a layout similar to the Hive.

When heading to the control center here, Halsey, her expression turning serious, asked Lance:

"Has that medieval-dressed Doctor had any conversations with you?"

Facing Halsey, Lance answered respectfully as well:

"According to the Boss's instructions, we have designated him as 049, nicknamed the plague doctor."

"049?" Halsey turned her head and glanced at William behind her.

William just shrugged, not explaining much.

Lance, not noticing their little interaction, continued: "After learning that you, Dr., and the Boss were coming, we did not interrogate him privately."

"Dr." William took over from Halsey and asked Lance: "Is there anything in the Containment Center that needs to be reported?"

Hearing this, Lance told William: "The D-Class Personnel brought in yesterday seem to have strong resistance.

The Security Personnel first tried to persuade them kindly, guaranteeing they would have food and clothing, and promised that if there were sufficient other D-Class Personnel, they would not become experimental subjects.

But they still violently resisted and tried to escape, though they were easily subdued by the Security Personnel."

"Hmm." William didn't say anything more.

In fact, months ago, he had proposed a memory modification plan to Halsey.

However, she had not yet fully researched the technology of memory.

According to her explanation...

Clones were like a blank sheet of paper, on which various pasts could be easily written.

But the memories of normal people were like very messy draft paper.

If one attempted to erase or modify them, the best outcome would be becoming a vegetable.

So William could only let those survivors become D-Class Personnel.

Compassion?

Cannot have it.

Before long, everyone arrived at the control room of the Containment Center, with Hank and the other Alpha members remaining outside to stand guard.

The screen hanging in the center displayed the scene in the interrogation room, while the plague doctor was reading notes, sitting upright on the side against the wall.

William and Halsey came to the screen side by side and ordered Lance: "Alright, dispatch a Researcher to talk to him."

"Yes, Boss."

...

The following content is the first interrogation of number 049:

(A Researcher walks into the room and sits opposite 049.)

049: (Speaking in standard English with a magnetic voice) Oh, has it finally begun?

Researcher: Begun what?

049: Heh, never mind.

Researcher: Very well, I am Dr. ■■...

049: (Interrupting, tone slightly excited) Doctor? Were you the one who tried to cure those three patients?

Excellent medical skill; it has also been a great help to my research on curing the pestilence.

Researcher: Three patients? Pestilence? I don't understand.

049: (Tone slightly disappointed) It seems you are not that Doctor. A pity, a pity.

Pestilence... Hmm... (Left fingers rhythmically tapping the table), what was it called... it is...

(Sighs) Ah, never mind.

It is everywhere, and many have already succumbed to it; in the future, more will succumb.

And I

have dedicated my life to finding a cure for it.
