Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: A Pleasant Conversation

Continuation of the interrogation of Subject 049;

Researcher: When you speak of the Great Pestilence, are you referring to the Black Death?

049: (Pauses) Why would you ask that?

Researcher: Because your attire resembles that of Doctors who treated the Plague during the 15th and 16th centuries.

049: I see, but the Great Pestilence is not the Black Death. I do not know how to explain it to you.

Researcher: In 그 case, let us skip that for now and discuss the incident that occurred in Athabasca.

Was it you who killed those townsfolk and turned them into mindless corpses?

049: They were all infected. I had no choice, but I... I cured them.

Researcher: Cured? They are all dead. Does that count as a cure?

049: (Somewhat displeased) Dead?

No, Doctor (tone emphasizing)!

Please do not use unprofessional terminology to question my efforts. There is only one disease in this World, and that is the Great Pestilence.

The vast majority of them were very, very ill!

Researcher: Forgive me, I did not mean to provoke you.

But the fact remains that those you have 'cured' are, in a sense, no longer human.

049: (Expressing sadness) Sigh... true. My current medical skills cannot yet fully save them. I am sorry... Inside the Containment Center's control room;

William watched 049's composed demeanor and gentlemanly grace, finally understanding why 049 had such high popularity in his original World.

However, who were the three patients 049 mentioned?

William was somewhat confused.

Could it be the Tyrants?

Standing beside him, Halsey spoke with great interest:

"That 049 seems to share many common topics with me! May I speak with him personally?"

"No!" William refused immediately.

Nonsense. Even if the internet in his original World called 049 a 'Little Angel', he was still a mass murderer.

He possessed the ability to kill with a single touch.

What if Halsey had what 049 called the Great Pestilence?

Umbrella could not afford such a loss.

Seeing William getting a bit angry, Halsey had to step closer, standing on her tiptoes to whisper in William's ear:

"Boss, I believe 049 can answer many of my difficult problems. I must ask him in person.

It would be helpful for perfecting the spartan project and even for the research on the t-virus.

I was involved in the construction of the Containment Center; there are isolated interrogation rooms here. Safety should not be an issue."

"."

Hearing what Halsey said, William no longer flatly refused but began weighing the pros and cons.

If her safety could be guaranteed, it wasn't impossible. He then turned to Lance beside him and said calmly:

"Captain, prepare an interrogation room with isolation equipment so Dr. Halsey can safely converse with 049."

"Yes, sir." Lance immediately executed the order, turning to walk out of the control room.

"Oh? Boss, you agreed?"

William did not respond to Halsey. He simply led her out of the control room and commanded Hank:

"Hank, Dr. Halsey will personally interrogate Subject 049 shortly. You and six other Alpha members are to protect her closely."

"Yes, sir."

"Wow~!"

Halsey couldn't hide her excitement and hugged William, squinting with a smile. "I knew the Boss was the best!"

"Uh..."

Sensing she was being a bit too intimate, William looked away, pushed her embrace off, and cautioned:

"Once you enter the room, you must follow Hank's instructions completely. No fooling around, do you hear me?"

"Mm-hmm! I got it~" Halsey nodded obediently.

Soon, fully armed Security Personnel escorted 049 to a slightly larger room.

In the center of the room was a specialized bulletproof glass wall with sound transmission holes, dividing the room into two sections.

049 was escorted by security to a seat behind the wall.

Shortly after, Halsey entered the room under the protection of Hank and the other Alpha members, sitting across from 049.

049 offered no resistance throughout the process, which greatly relaxed William as he watched through the one-way glass outside the interrogation room.

The following is the dialogue between Halsey and Subject 049;

Halsey: Hello, I am Dr. Halsey.

049: (Smiling) Hello, Doctor.

Halsey: Were the patients you mentioned curing earlier three 'burly men' wearing green leather coats?

049: Yes. Could they be... your masterpieces?

Halsey: That's right.

049: (Rather excited) Is that so? Wonderful, it seems I am not alone!

...049's reaction made Hank and the others tense up.

049 also seemed to realize his undignified behavior and quickly adjusted his mindset.

Dialogue continues... 049: This proves you are different from other Doctors (the word 'Doctor' was spoken with a tone of disdain).

Very different. Your horizons are much broader.

At the same time, you have given me much inspiration for my methods. Thank you, Doctor.

Halsey: (Waving her hand somewhat bashfully) You're welcome. So... do I have that Great Pestilence you speak of?

049: (Does not answer directly, but gazes at Halsey for a while) Not for now. For now.

Halsey: I see. Never mind, let's not dwell on those questions.

049: (Nods) Indeed. Let us discuss academic matters.

Next.

Halsey asked 049 various questions multiple times, and 049 answered them very patiently.

049's attitude when talking to Halsey was significantly better than with Dr. ■■.

049 even proactively pushed his notebook through the gap at the bottom of the bulletproof glass to Halsey's feet, sharing his insights on curing the so-called Great Pestilence.

The entire process lasted about one hundred and forty minutes, and Halsey and 049 had a very pleasant conversation, appearing like kindred spirits.

Finally, it ended with 049 stating he needed rest, and he was escorted by security to a specially made containment room.

Shortly after the interrogation ended, William discussed some precautions with her, such as using lavender sedatives to better contain 049 and so on.

Afterward, he led Halsey back to the surface and boarded the private jet waiting at the airport.

Eventually, the A380 and two F22s flew away from Containment Center No. 1, heading back toward Troy Base.
