Chapter 23 - A peace that feels too quiet

The mansion was quiet in a way that made my skin crawl. Not the safe, comforting quiet of victory, but the kind that whispered, something is coming. I moved slowly through the halls, noticing the subtle increase in guards. Twice as many as before. Their eyes followed me, alert and calculating.

Behind me, the Don's presence filled the room even before I heard his voice.

"You shouldn't wander alone," he said, low and commanding.

I turned, forcing a laugh I didn't feel. "The war's over. The enemies are gone."

His dark eyes didn't leave mine. "Some enemies never disappear."

A soft vibration in his pocket pulled his attention. He pulled out his phone, scanned the message, and a shadow passed over his face. Concern. Something I hadn't seen before.

"What is it?" I asked, my heart skipping.

He slipped the phone back into his pocket and studied me, his expression unreadable. "Someone just declared war."

A chill ran down my spine. "Declare war?" I echoed, my voice small.

He didn't answer. Instead, he stepped closer, his hand brushing against mine in a touch that was protective and possessive at once. "Get used to it," he murmured. "This world isn't done with us."

Outside, the night remained calm, but I knew better. The shadows beyond the mansion walls had shifted. Someone was watching, waiting. And for the first time since the auction, I realized that the real danger hadn't ended—it had only just begun.

I looked up at him, breathing uneven, and he caught my gaze with a possessive intensity that made my knees weak. "No one touches you," he said. "Not now, not ever. Do you understand?"

I nodded, my pulse hammering. The promise in his voice was absolute. But deep down, I knew this peace was fragile.

And somewhere in the dark, the war we thought we'd won was quietly gathering strength.
