Chapter 24 - Shadows at the Gates

The night air was thick with unease. I couldn't shake the feeling that someone was watching us. Every time I glanced at the perimeter, I noticed subtle movements—guards shifting, shadows stretching across the walls, and a faint whisper of wind that felt almost deliberate.

The Don had disappeared into his private office, leaving me alone in the grand hall. I tried to calm myself, telling myself it was just nerves, just the residue of the last battle. But instinctively, I knew something was wrong.

A sudden noise made me freeze—a soft metallic clang outside the gate. My breath caught.

I didn't have to guess what it was. The Don appeared behind me, silent as a shadow, his presence grounding yet terrifying.

"Stay here," he said, his voice low but sharp. "And do not move."

Before I could protest, he strode to the balcony and peered into the darkness. I followed his gaze and saw them: figures moving in the distance, their silhouettes barely visible under the moonlight. Too many to count at first glance, but the energy around them felt wrong—predatory.

"They've come back," he murmured, a hard edge in his tone.

"Who?" I asked, my voice trembling.

"Those who thought we were finished," he said, turning to me, eyes dark. "The rivals who thought they could take everything I built. They underestimated me… and they underestimated you."

My stomach churned. Me?

"They're watching the mansion. They've learned from their last mistake," he continued, walking toward me. "Tonight, we see if they're bold enough to step inside."

The Don's hand brushed against mine—not just protective, but possessive. I felt the weight of his gaze, the silent promise in it. "No one lays a finger on you," he said, voice softer now, almost tender. "I swear it."

I wanted to believe him, and I did, but my mind raced with possibilities. The enemies we'd fought before were gone—or so I thought. Now, it seemed, the war wasn't over. It had only shifted… and I was caught in the middle.

The mansion, which had once felt like a sanctuary, now seemed like a trap. Shadows danced along the walls, hiding secrets and dangers alike. And as the night deepened, I knew one thing with chilling clarity: nothing would ever be the same again.
