Chapter 23 - The Salvatore Brothers Investigate Alexander

The party at Mystic Falls High School had finally ended.

Students slowly left the building.

Cars filled the parking lot.

Laughter and music faded into the quiet night.

But for some people…

The night was just beginning.

Inside the Salvatore Boarding House…

Damon Salvatore sat comfortably on the couch.

A glass of bourbon in his hand.

The fire in the fireplace flickered softly.

Stefan stood near the large wooden desk, flipping through a stack of old records.

Damon watched him with mild amusement.

"You know…"

He took a slow sip from his glass.

"You look like a detective from the 1800s."

Stefan didn't look up.

"I'm trying to find something."

Damon smirked.

"About our mysterious friend?"

Stefan nodded.

"Alexander Nightshade."

Damon leaned back.

"What about him?"

Stefan finally looked up.

His expression serious.

"He doesn't exist."

Damon raised an eyebrow.

"That's dramatic."

Stefan walked closer, placing several papers on the table.

"I checked school records."

"Property records."

"Town history."

Damon leaned forward slightly.

Interested now.

"And?"

Stefan crossed his arms.

"There's nothing."

Damon frowned slightly.

"Nothing?"

Stefan nodded.

"No birth certificate."

"No previous school records."

"No family history."

He paused.

"It's like he just appeared in Mystic Falls."

Damon chuckled quietly.

"Well that definitely screams normal teenager."

Stefan ignored the sarcasm.

"Damon… when you confronted him the other night."

Damon looked up.

"Yeah?"

Stefan's eyes narrowed slightly.

"What did you feel?"

Damon didn't answer immediately.

Instead he slowly finished his drink.

Then placed the empty glass on the table.

"Pressure."

Stefan nodded slowly.

"I felt it too."

Damon leaned forward again.

His smirk slowly returning.

"Whatever he is…"

"He's powerful."

Stefan walked toward the window.

Looking out at the dark forest surrounding the house.

"Too powerful."

Damon stood up.

"Which makes him interesting."

Stefan sighed.

"You think everything dangerous is interesting."

Damon smiled.

"That's why life is fun."

Across town…

Inside her bedroom…

Elena Gilbert sat on her bed.

Her shoes lay forgotten on the floor.

The party was over.

But her thoughts were still racing.

She remembered dancing with Alexander.

The way he looked at her.

Calm.

Mysterious.

Different.

Elena sighed softly.

'Why does he feel so different from everyone else?'

Then she shook her head.

Trying to push the thoughts away.

But it didn't work.

Meanwhile…

In another part of town…

Bonnie Bennett sat quietly at her desk.

Several old books lay open in front of her.

Books about witches.

Spirits.

Ancient supernatural creatures.

She flipped through the pages nervously.

'That power…'

She had never felt anything like it.

Even the oldest magic she had studied felt weaker.

Bonnie whispered quietly.

'What are you, Alexander?'

Far away from them all…

Alexander Nightshade stood alone on a hill overlooking Mystic Falls.

The wind moved softly through the trees.

His golden eyes watched the sleeping town.

He could feel everything.

The vampires.

The witches.

The werewolves.

Their curiosity.

Their suspicion.

Their fear.

Alexander smiled faintly.

'They're starting to notice.'

But none of them understood the truth yet.

And for now…

That was exactly how he wanted it.

From the shadows behind him…

A familiar voice suddenly spoke.

"You know…"

Alexander didn't turn.

He already knew who it was.

Katherine Pierce stepped into the moonlight.

Her smile playful as always.

"You are becoming very popular in Mystic Falls."

Alexander replied calmly.

"It wasn't intentional."

Katherine laughed softly.

"Sure it wasn't."

She walked closer.

Stopping beside him.

Looking down at the town below.

Then she glanced at him again.

"Tell me something, Alexander."

"Yes?"

Her eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"How long do you think it will take before everyone realizes what you really are?"

Alexander looked at the distant lights of Mystic Falls.

His golden eyes glowing faintly.

'Not yet.'

Then he answered calmly.

"Long enough."

Katherine smiled wider.

"Good."

She stepped away.

"Because I'm enjoying the mystery."

And just like that—

She disappeared into the night again.

Leaving Alexander alone with the silent town below.
