The practitioners had each changed in the same direction: deeper in their specific orientations, more fluent in what fluency in their orientations produced, more present to the founding circle's particular quality without the Year One quality of practitioners still learning what kind of presence the founding circle required.
Wei Shen sat in the center of the Year Three morning practice and attended to the difference. He did this at each year's beginning — the specific comparison, Year One to Year Two to Year Three, each year's opening practice read against the prior year's — because the difference between years was a kind of record the practice kept for itself. The seventeenth notebook had three years of this comparison now. The Year Three entry would be the third.
He wrote in the seventeenth notebook after the Year Three opening practice: the depth is no longer a quality I read by attending to it. It has become the quality of the attending itself. She found the founding circle.
Not in the sense of discovering its location — the Monitoring instrument did not produce location data in the manner the Enforcement instrument did. She found it in the sense that every practitioner who had come to Tidal Shore and stood at the founding circle's outer ring had found it: through the ambient quality the founding circle produced at close range, the chord the keepers had maintained for eight centuries and the voice present for three years and the receiving layer oriented and the Dao of the Cradle still holding. She does not know the correspondence or the design documents or the forward resonance or the accreting depth's four-month pulse.
