Chapter 191: Defiance in the Dark
The blow from the Void-King had shattered the control consoles, but it hadn't shattered the Alpha's will. Coughing up a mixture of blood and metallic dust, the Alpha pushed himself off the floor. His vision was swimming, and every bone in his body screamed in protest, but he could see the Void-King's shadow creeping closer to the Omega.
"Stay... away from her," the Alpha growled, his voice rasping but steady.
The Void-King didn't even turn. "You are a persistent speck of dust, Alpha. Your weapon is dead. Your sanctuary is cracked. What do you have left but a slow, painful end?"
"I have the one thing you'll never understand," the Alpha said, reaching into his utility belt. He didn't pull out a weapon; he pulled out a small, glowing shard—a fragment of the First Anchor they had recovered in Volume 1. "I have memory."
He jammed the shard into the hilt of his pulse-blade. The weapon didn't just light up; it roared. A chaotic, brilliant white light erupted from the blade, pushing back the purple shadows of the Void-King.
The Omega, sensing the shift in energy, used the last of her strength to channel the core's remaining stability into the Alpha. "The bridge..." she choked out, "it's not for energy, Alpha... it's for us. Fight as one!"
For the first time, a flicker of something—uncertainty? fear?—crossed the Void-King's featureless face. The Alpha didn't wait. He lunged, a comet of white and gold light aimed directly at the heart of the void.
