Chapter 30 - Digital Bank Run

March 14, 2008.

The heat was a physical weight, but inside the new Vanguard Bank headquarters in Makati, it was perpetual winter.

Xavier Guan sat on his stool in the glass-walled command center his eyes fixed on a wall of twelve monitors.

On the central screen, the PSEi (Philippine Stock Exchange index) was a sea of red.

The property developers like Ayala Land, Megaworld, and Filinvest were all down by nearly five percent in the morning session alone.

"The blood is in the water, Xavi" Leo said, his voice hushed with a mix of awe and terror.

He was holding a printout of the latest Bloomberg feed. "The Bear Stearns liquidity crisis just hit the wire in New York. They're saying JP Morgan is being forced by the Fed to buy them out for two dollars a share. Two dollars! A year ago, they were at one hundred and seventy"

Xavier didn't turn around. He was watching the local Real Estate Bubble indicator he'd programmed into the Abyss.

"Bear Stearns is the sacrifice, Leo" Xavier said, his voice cool.

"But in Manila, the property kings still think they're invincible. They're launching three new Luxury Living towers in BGC this week. They don't realize their buyers' financing is about to evaporate. Our PSEi short position... what's the mark-to-market?"

Leo checked his laptop. "Unrealized profit on the property shorts is currently at twenty-five million dollars. And the US ABX shorts... Xavi, with the Bear Stearns collapse, our total Midas position has surged. Unrealized profit is now at two hundred and forty million dollars"

Two hundred and forty million dollars. Over ten billion pesos.

Xavier finally turned his chair, his seven-year-old face illuminated by the data. "Cash out thirty million of the PSEi profit. We need to fund the Digital Branch launch today. I want the people to see that while the big banks are tightening their belts, Vanguard is giving out gifts"

Down on the street level, the lobby of the Vanguard Bank headquarters was a scene of controlled chaos.

Arthur Guan stood by the entrance, wearing a crisp suit. Beside him was Engineer Alvin, and a row of ten Digital Tellers.

These weren't traditional bankers; they were young graduates from Axiom's IT pool, equipped with high-end devices and biometric scanners.

"Step right up!" Arthur boomed, his voice carrying great authority.

"Vanguard Bank is now open for the future! High-interest savings for the youth, and immediate credit for the workers of the Manila Steel Mill!"

A line of nearly five hundred people stretched out the door and around the corner of Ayala Avenue.

Most were students from the nearby universities, attracted by the "Vanguard Messenger" alerts they'd received that morning.

"It's true!" a student shouted, holding up his phone. "If we link our Vanguard Card, we get a 5% interest rate on savings! No other bank in the country is doing that!"

"And the Steel Guild workers" Alvin added, pointing to a group of men in MSM uniforms. "Your payroll is already live. You can withdraw your back-pay at any Vanguard station or use your cards"

Xavier watched the feed from the lobby.

This was the Digital Bank Run. By offering interest rates that the legacy banks couldn't match, he was hoovering up the liquidity of the youth and the working class. He was building a private treasury that was independent of the national inter-bank market.

---------------

While the bankers were fighting over interest rates, the industrial war was moving into the physical realm.

Mark Mendoza's voice crackled through Xavier's headset. "Sir, we have an intercept. Pineda Access Road, Tarlac. Kilometer 14"

Xavier's eyes snapped to the Guardian feed. "Report, Mark"

"Three unmarked delivery trucks and four motorcycles blocked a pylon shipment ten minutes ago" Mark reported. "

They weren't using sugar this time. They were using a crane. They tried to lift the steel pylons onto their own trucks"

"Aguila?"

"The lead motorcycle has a sticker for Valdez Logistics" Mark confirmed.

"We've engaged the Shield Protocol. The Guardians are already on site. We're holding them at the perimeter"

"Don't let them take the steel, Mark" Xavier commanded.

"But don't fire a shot. Use the Flash-Strobes. And make sure the helmet cams are recording everything. I want the world to see Federico's men acting like common highwaymen"

---------------

Two hours later, the Guan family van pulled up to the main gate of the Manila Steel Mill.

Arthur and Clara were in the back, while Mei-Mei was pressed against the window, her eyes wide with a mix of fear and excitement. She was wearing a tiny yellow hard hat and a safety vest that was three sizes too big.

"Is that where the fire dragons live?" she asked, pointing to the towering blast furnace.

"That's the biggest dragon of all, Mei" Xavier said, helping her out of the van.

"It eats coal and breathes iron. But don't worry, Pa is the dragon-tamer"

They walked onto the production floor. The heat was a living thing, a vibrating wall of energy that made Mei-Mei's pigtails frizz. Engineer Alvin was waiting by the main tap.

"The first ten thousand tons are ready, Mr. Guan" Alvin said, nodding to Arthur.

"But we have a problem. The Aguila hijack attempt in Tarlac has delayed the SCTEX pylon delivery by six hours"

Arthur's face darkened. "Is the steel safe?"

"Mark's men held them off until the local police arrived" Alvin said. "But the video... Xavi, you should see the video"

Xavier pulled up the feed on his phone. It was high-resolution footage from a Guardian's helmet cam.

It showed a group of thugs in Aguila uniforms attempting to winch a ten-ton steel pylon onto a flatbed.

Suddenly, a dozen Guardians on motorcycles swarmed the site, their high-intensity LED strobes blinding the hijackers.

The footage was cinematic, visceral, and damning.

"Sarah" Xavier said into his headset.

"Launch the Highway Hijack campaign. I want this video on every Friendster profile, every news blog, and every TV station by the 6:00 PM news. The headline: Aguila Construction: The Steel Pirates of Tarlac'"

Mei-Mei was watching the molten iron pour into the molds, her mouth forming a perfect 'O'. "Look! The dragon is crying fire!"

She turned to Xavier, her eyes shining with wonder. "Kuya, can the fire dragons make a crown for Ma? So she can be a queen?"

Clara laughed, a genuine, joyful sound that echoed through the industrial warehouse.

She picked up Mei-Mei and sat her on her hip. "Pa is the king today, Syobe. But Kuya is the one who keeps the fire burning"

---------------

On the way back to the penthouse, the family stopped at a Vanguard Station in Pasig.

The station was packed. In the center of the lounge was a sleek vending machine. It was dispensing the Mei-Mei Special—the purple cloud potion.

Mei-Mei ran to the machine, her Bell-shoes ringing. "My drink! Look, Ma! It has my name!"

A student was currently buying one, swiping his Vanguard Peso Card on the built-in reader. He took the bottle and took a long, thirsty gulp.

"This stuff is magic" the student told his friend. "I drank three of these during the exams, and I felt like I could see the answers through the paper"

Xavier watched with a smirk. The Smart Drink wasn't magic, it was a combination of high-grade caffeine, B-vitamins, and a specific blend of glucose that the Abyss had optimized for a cognitive spike.

It was the 2008 precursor to the energy-drink boom of the 2010s.

"We're moving ten thousand bottles a day across the network, Xavi" Sarah reported over the radio.

"And the Vanguard Bank savings accounts are surging. We've processed two billion pesos in new deposits today. The liquidity of the youth is officially ours"

---------------

Late that night, Xavier was back in his command center.

The penthouse was quiet. Arthur and Clara were in the living room, sharing a bottle of wine and talking about the mill. Mei-Mei was asleep, her "Fire Dragon" hard hat resting on the nightstand.

Xavier sat at the Bloomberg terminal. The news was catastrophic.

[ABYSS: BEAR STEARNS LIQUIDATION COMPLETE. GLOBAL MARGIN CALLS INITIATED. INTER-BANK LENDING RATE (LIBOR) SPIKING TO RECORD HIGHS.]

[PROJECT MIDAS: UNREALIZED PROFIT: $282M USD.]

Xavier stared at the screen. Two hundred and eighty-two million dollars. Nearly thirteen billion pesos.

"It's time, Leo" Xavier whispered into his headset.

"Time for what?"

"The Big One" Xavier said. "The Big Two telcos... their stock is currently trading at a premium because they're seen as Safe Havens. But our PR war has just started to hit their reputation. And their debt... Elena found that they're over-leveraged on their own 3G infrastructure loans from European banks"

Xavier typed a series of commands.

**PROJECT: SPECTRUM.**

*Target: Majority Acquisition of National Telecommunications Debt.*

"We're not going to sue them at the NTC anymore, Leo" Xavier said, his eyes glowing with the blue light of the Abyss.

"We're going to buy their debt from the failing European banks for pennies. And then, we're going to walk into their boardrooms and tell them that Vanguard is the new landlord of the Filipino airwaves"

He looked at the infinity symbol on his 2031 phone.
