Chapter 34 - The Peak of the Wave

May 22, 2008.

Inside the four-floor complex that now housed Axiom and Vanguard Capital, the air was a crisp, artificial 19 degrees.

Xavier Guan stood on the balcony of the executive floor, his small hands resting on the glass railing. Below him, the city was a hive of frantic activity, oblivious to the fact that the floor of the global economy was currently disintegrating.

Behind him, the office was a symphony of productivity. Axiom had expanded from a single floor to a multi-pod powerhouse.

On the third floor, the Gaming Pod was overseeing the launch of Legacy-RO 2.0 and three new mobile titles designed for the upcoming smartphone boom.

The Harvester Pod on the second floor had tripled in size; rows of silent, liquid-cooled servers were mining more than just gold—they were mining data, sentiment, and influence across a dozen virtual worlds.

"Xavi, look at the Friendster metrics" Sarah said, walking onto the balcony with a tablet—one of the new Vanguard Education production models.

"The Sentiment Pod is hitting its targets" she reported, her eyes bright with the power of the tool she was wielding.

"We have ten thousand Elite bot profiles—all with backstories, friends, and histories. They've successfully pivoted the national conversation. People aren't talking about the telco tax anymore; they're talking about their right to digital connection. The telcos are being framed as Corporate Colonizers while Vanguard is the Local Savior"

Xavier didn't look back. "And the influencers?"

"We've 'acquired' the loyalty of the top twenty tech bloggers in the country"

Sarah said. "They don't know they're working for a seven-year-old. They think they're part of a 'Vanguard Think Tank'. Whatever we want the public to believe by Tuesday, they'll be writing about it by Sunday"

Xavier nodded. The bot farms weren't just for PR; they were a weapon of mass persuasion. He was building the capability to sway an election or sink a stock price with a few lines of code.

The expansion wasn't just digital.

On the large monitor in the breakroom, a commercial was playing. It featured a bright, sunny park in Cavite. In the center was Mei-Mei, wearing her signature star-dress and sparkly sunglasses. She was holding a vibrant purple "Magic Potion"

"It's sour! It's sweet! It makes your brain go *zap*!" Mei-Mei cheered on screen, her laughter infectious.

The commercial ended with the Guan Desserts logo and Mei-Mei's face as the official mascot.

"She's a national sensation, Xavi" Clara said, joining him on the balcony. She looked at her son with a mix of pride and a lingering, quiet awe.

"We had to hire a specialized team just to manage her fan mail. People are calling her the Vanguard Princess. The stalls are seeing lines that rival Jollibee"

"It's her light, Ma" Xavier said, his voice softening. "People need something bright when the world is getting dark"

"It's more than that" Clara whispered.

"She feels safe because she knows you're there. She doesn't know about the Shells or the Shorts. She just knows her Kuya makes magic"

Xavier looked at his mother. "And you, Ma? Are you okay with her being the face of the brand?"

"I was worried at first" Clara admitted. "But Mark's Guardians are everywhere. I've never seen a child more protected than Mei-Mei. If being a mascot makes her happy and keeps our family together..."

The domestic peace was interrupted by a frantic shout from the workstation.

"Xavi! Brent Crude just touched $135!" Leo screamed, his voice cracking.

"The US inventory numbers just leaked. It's a massive drawdown! The market is going parabolic!"

Xavier walked back inside, his eyes fixed on the flickering oil chart. It was a vertical line of green. To the world, it was proof of an energy crisis. To Xavier, it was the peak of the mountain.

"This is it, Leo" Xavier said, his voice a cold anchor in the room. "The peak of the wave. Close the long positions. All of them"

"What? Xavi, it's still going up! We could see $140 by morning!"

"Close it, Leo. Now" Xavier commanded. "Lock in the $120 million profit. And as soon as the last long is cleared... I want you to flip. Go short. Max leverage across all twenty brokers in the Obscura... I mean, the Shell network"

Leo's hands shook as he typed the orders. "You're betting nearly half a billion dollars that the price of oil will fall in the middle of an energy crisis?"

"The crisis is a ghost, Leo" Xavier said. "The recession has already killed the demand; the world just hasn't checked the pulse yet. By June, the tank will be full, and the price will drown"

Within ten minutes, the trades were executed. Xavier had successfully surfed the surge and was now positioned to profit from the carnage.

While the oil millions were moving, the political war reached its climax.

General Trias Plaza was a sea of blue.

Nearly twenty thousand students, parents, and local workers had gathered for the "Connect-Trias Public Hearing"

The air was thick with the scent of Mei-Mei Special drinks and the sound of a thousand smartphones chiming with Vanguard Messenger alerts.

The NTC Commissioner sat on a temporary stage, looking like a man awaiting execution. Beside him, Representative Santos's son was sweating through his suit.

Patrick Velasco stood at the podium, his voice amplified by the massive Guan Heavy Industries sound system.

"They say our signal is redundant!" Patrick shouted, gesturing to the crowd.

"They say these students don't need free messaging! They say we should pay a tax to companies that have been overcharging us for a decade! I ask you, General Trias—is this signal redundant?"

"NO!" the crowd roared, a sound that shook the windows of the municipal hall.

Xavier sat in the front row, holding Mei-Mei's hand. He wasn't looking at the crowd; he was looking at the NTC Commissioner.

"Mark" Xavier whispered into his headset.

"Sir?"

"Activate the Transparency Feed" Xavier commanded.

Suddenly, the massive LED screens on either side of the stage flickered.

Instead of the Vanguard logo, they showed a series of leaked internal emails from the Big Two telcos. They detailed the specific lobbying budget allocated to Representative Santos. They showed the plan to "physically disrupt" Vanguard's fiber lines.

The crowd went silent as they read the words. Then, the silence turned into a low, dangerous rumble.

The NTC Commissioner stood up, his hands raised in a gesture of surrender.

"In light of... new evidence and the overwhelming public sentiment... the Commission hereby grants Vanguard Digital a permanent, non-expiring license for the Calabarzon 3G spectrum! The 'Digital Tax' review is officially terminated!"

The plaza erupted. It wasn't just a win; it was a coronation. Vanguard was now the law of the air.

Late that night, back in the Ortigas penthouse, the adrenaline of the day had faded.

Xavier found Mei-Mei in the Study Den, her "Magic Book" glowing in her lap. She was focused on the screen, her lips moving as she read a message.

"Kuya! Look! The dragon found a friend!" she cheered, showing him the screen.

It was a video message from a girl about Mei-Mei's age. She was sitting in a room filled with high-tech toys, a window behind her showing the skyline of Singapore.

"Hello, Mei-Mei! My name is Sophia" the girl said, her English accented and precise. "My Papa said you have the best magic book. Can we draw together?"

Xavier's eyes narrowed as he looked at the girl's metadata. Sophia Lee. Daughter of David Lee, Lead Negotiator for the Singapore-ASEAN Tech Council.

"She's my pen pal, Kuya!" Mei-Mei explained. "We're going to make a potion that makes the clouds turn into ice cream!"

Xavier sat on the floor beside her. He had intended for the Magic Book to be a security device, but the Abyss had apparently facilitated a connection that was even more valuable.

Sophia Lee's father was the man who would decide the regional 4G standards in 2010.

"That's a very important friend, Mei" Xavier said, kissing her forehead. "Tell her that the dragons in Manila would love to see her ice cream clouds"

Xavier walked to his workstation and pulled up the Bloomberg terminal.

The date was May 22, 2008. In the first timeline, the world still had four months before the total collapse. But in this timeline, the tremors were already shaking the foundation.

"Leo" Xavier whispered into the dark.

"I'm here, Xavi" the voice came back, sounding exhausted but resolute.

"Prepare the offer for Manila Telecom" Xavier said. "The Big Two are bleeding from the PR war and the oil surge. Their debt is coming due. We're not going to be a regional player anymore"

"We're going national?"

"We will" Xavier corrected.
