The call that ripped me so unceremoniously from Kay's arms was the first of a series of events so unfortunate I began checking all my clothing for embroidery reading 'made by Lemony Snicket.'
Somehow, the clothing boutique I worked at managed to have an actual honest to god emergency. Part of the roof caved in and the rain that started at some point while Kay was playing me like a damn fiddle.
As soon as I arrived I was thrust into a flurry of panicked rearranging as we scurried about trying to save all the merchandise. By the end of it I was soaked to the bone and shivering with a twenty minute walk home stretching out ahead of me.
When I was a block from my apartment I bumped into Xavier. He held his umbrella out in invitation for me to join him.
"You look like a drowned rat."
