Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 - Rules of the Loop

The rain outside grew heavier.

Water slid down the bookstore windows in long silver lines.

Inside, Ethan leaned against the counter, studying Liya like she had just handed him the script of a strange movie.

"So," he said slowly, "let's assume the universe has decided to trap us in a time loop."

"Just me," Liya corrected.

"Right. Just you."

He tapped the book he was holding.

"And according to your story… I die every night."

"Yes."

He nodded thoughtfully.

"Different ways each time?"

Liya hesitated.

Then she answered honestly.

"Yes."

Ethan exhaled.

"Wow."

"That's all you have to say?"

"Well, what else should I say?" he replied.

"Apparently my survival rate today is zero."

Liya folded her arms.

"Don't joke about it."

"I'm not joking," he said calmly.

"I'm adapting."

He stepped closer.

"If I panic, that doesn't help either of us."

That answer surprised her.

"You're strangely calm."

Ethan shrugged.

"Probably shock."

Then he gestured around the bookstore.

"So let's break this down."

"Break what down?"

"The rules."

Liya frowned slightly.

"What rules?"

"Every strange system has rules," he said.

"Video games, stories, even weird cosmic time loops."

He raised one finger.

"Rule number one: the day resets at midnight."

She nodded.

"Correct."

"Rule number two: only you remember previous loops."

"Yes."

"Rule number three…"

He paused.

"…fate really wants me dead."

Liya didn't smile.

"Exactly."

Ethan walked slowly between the bookshelves, thinking.

"So what happens if we avoid the dangerous places?"

"I tried that," she said.

"And?"

"You died anyway."

"Different accident?"

"Yes."

Ethan stopped walking.

That meant something important.

"So the universe doesn't care how I die," he said quietly.

"Only that I die."

Liya nodded slowly.

"That's what it feels like."

Silence filled the bookstore.

Rain continued tapping against the windows.

Then Ethan asked the question Liya had been afraid of.

"What if the loop exists because of me?"

She blinked.

"What?"

"What if my death is the reason the day resets?"

"That doesn't make sense."

"Why not?"

He leaned against a bookshelf.

"If my death is a fixed point… maybe the universe is forcing it to happen."

"And until it happens correctly…"

"…the day resets."

Liya stared at him.

The idea made her chest tighten.

"You mean… the loop ends if you die?"

"Possibly."

Her voice rose slightly.

"That's not an option."

Ethan looked at her carefully.

"You're very determined to keep me alive."

"Yes."

"Why?"

She opened her mouth to answer.

Then stopped.

Because the truth was complicated.

In the first loop, Ethan was just a stranger.

In the second, he became someone she shared coffee with.

In the third…

She already felt connected to him.

Even though he remembered none of it.

"I just am," she said quietly.

Ethan studied her face for a long moment.

Then he smiled slightly.

"Well, that's nice to know."

She rolled her eyes.

"You're unbelievable."

"Probably."

He glanced at the wall clock.

4:47 PM.

"So what's our plan today?"

Liya took a deep breath.

"We keep you alive as long as possible."

"And observe what fate does."

"Yes."

He nodded.

"Scientific approach."

Then he pointed at the door.

"Step one?"

"What?"

"Leaving the bookstore."

"Why?"

"Because if the universe is trying to kill me…"

His smile returned.

"…we should at least make it work for it."

Despite everything, Liya laughed.

"You're treating this like an experiment."

"Isn't it?"

He opened the bookstore door.

Rainy air rushed inside.

"Come on, Liya."

She grabbed her jacket.

"Where are we going?"

Ethan stepped into the rain.

"Anywhere except the places I died before."

Liya followed him outside.

Rain fell steadily across the city.

The streets shimmered under the gray sky.

For the first time since the loop began…

They weren't just trying to survive the day.

They were trying to understand it.

But somewhere deep in the city…

Fate was already adjusting the board.

And the next move was coming. ⏳
