The city was louder than ever.
Sirens echoed through the streets behind them as emergency crews rushed toward the tanker explosion.
Smoke still rose into the night sky.
But Liya and Ethan kept moving.
They ran through narrow streets, past closed shops and flickering streetlights.
Ahead of them, the tall clock tower stood in the center of the city.
Its glowing face cut through the darkness like a beacon.
Ethan checked his phone while running.
11:53 PM.
"Seven minutes."
Liya's chest tightened.
The countdown felt louder with every second.
"Why the clock tower?" she asked between breaths.
"If this loop is tied to time…"
"…then the place measuring time might matter."
"That's just a theory."
"Right now theories are all we've got."
They turned a corner and finally reached the plaza.
The clock tower stood in the middle of an open square.
Tall.
Silent.
Ancient.
The giant clock hands slowly moved across the glowing dial.
Tick.
Tick.
Tick.
Each second echoed faintly through the quiet plaza.
Surprisingly…
No chaos here.
No accidents.
No explosions.
Just calm.
Too calm.
Liya looked around carefully.
"This feels wrong."
Ethan nodded.
"Yeah."
"Fate has been throwing disasters at us all night."
"And now suddenly nothing."
He stared up at the clock tower.
11:54 PM.
Six minutes left.
"Maybe this is the final stage."
"What do you mean?"
"The calm before the last move."
Liya crossed her arms nervously.
"I hate that phrase."
They walked slowly into the center of the plaza.
The tower loomed above them.
Massive gears ticked faintly inside its stone walls.
Ethan looked around the empty square.
"You know something?"
"What?"
"This is the first place tonight where nothing is trying to kill me."
"Don't say that."
He laughed quietly.
"Okay, fair."
Then he looked at her seriously.
"If I'm right about the loop…"
"…this is where it ends."
Liya's stomach twisted.
"You still think you have to die."
"Maybe."
"And you're okay with that?"
He thought for a moment.
Then answered honestly.
"Not really."
Her chest tightened.
"But if my death stops the loop…"
"…then tomorrow you finally get your life back."
She stepped closer to him.
"You're talking like this is some heroic sacrifice."
"It kind of is."
"No."
Her voice shook slightly.
"It's stupid."
Ethan smiled softly.
"You're really bad at emotional speeches."
"Shut up."
For a moment they both laughed quietly.
The tension broke just slightly.
Then the clock chimed once.
11:55 PM.
Five minutes left.
The sound echoed across the empty plaza.
Liya looked around again.
Something felt off.
Very off.
"Ethan…"
"What?"
"Where is everyone?"
He glanced around.
The entire plaza was empty.
No pedestrians.
No cars.
No city noise.
Like the world had suddenly paused.
"You're right," he said quietly.
"That's weird."
Then—
The ground trembled slightly.
Both of them froze.
"What was that?" Liya whispered.
Ethan looked toward the nearby buildings.
Windows rattled faintly.
A deep rumbling sound rolled through the earth.
Low.
Heavy.
Powerful.
Liya's eyes widened.
"Ethan…"
"Yeah."
"That sounds like…"
The rumbling grew louder.
Streetlights flickered.
The pavement beneath their feet cracked slightly.
Ethan's voice dropped.
"…an earthquake."
The plaza shook again.
Stronger this time.
Buildings groaned as the ground shifted beneath them.
The clock tower above them creaked loudly.
Dust fell from its stone walls.
Liya felt her heart racing.
"Fate escalated again."
Ethan looked up at the towering structure above them.
The massive clock hands moved slowly toward midnight.
11:56 PM.
Four minutes left.
He exhaled slowly.
"…Yeah."
"This one's definitely the final move."
Because if the tower collapsed during the earthquake…
There was nowhere in the plaza they could run. ⏳
