Chapter 122 - Expecting the Unexpected Pt1

[Later That Day] [Cafe]

Jack and Haley sat across from each other near the corner of a quiet café, though neither of them had touched the drinks sitting between them.

Haley had been staring at the table for several minutes with both hands wrapped around her cup. Her fingers kept shifting along the cardboard sleeve while her thoughts clearly moved faster than she could organize them.

Jack watched her carefully before leaning forward. "Are you mad at me?"

Haley finally looked up, and the question seemed to break something loose inside her. "Mad at you? How are you even asking me that when you're sitting there looking completely normal?"

Jack blinked. "I'm trying to stay calm."

"That's exactly what I mean," Haley replied as she leaned closer, lowering her voice so the people around them wouldn't hear. "How are you not freaking out right now? Jack, I'm pregnant."

"I'm aware of that."

Haley stared at him. "See? That tone. That calm, responsible voice you use when something goes wrong. How do you do that?"

Jack rubbed the back of his neck while keeping his expression steady. "Trust me, my brain is doing plenty right now."

Haley barely seemed to hear him because the panic had already taken over again. "My mom is going to kill me. She literally warned me about being careful. She sat there and gave me the whole responsible-adult speech about protection, consequences, and how she didn't want me making the same mistakes she made when she was young."

Jack opened his mouth, though Haley kept going before he could respond.

"And then there's your career. You're shooting movies, writing books, producing things, traveling everywhere, and people are calling you Hollywood's next leading man. You're nineteen, Jack. I'm nineteen. We were supposed to have years before this happened."

Her breathing started getting faster as she leaned back against the chair.

"I had plans. We had plans. I wanted to travel with you whenever work finally slowed down. Paris, Italy, London, maybe somewhere tropical where we could stay in one of those ridiculous private villas you keep pretending aren't ridiculous. I wanted to build my career and maybe design my own collection someday, and we were supposed to move in together eventually, then get engaged, then get married, and then maybe have kids."

Jack stayed quiet as Haley somehow pushed through the entire thought without taking a proper breath.

From the outside, he probably looked calm.

Inside, he was anything but.

His heart had been pounding since the doctor said the word 'pregnant'. He could still hear them with uncomfortable clarity, replaying in his head no matter how many times he tried to focus on something else.

He was nineteen.

Haley was nineteen.

There was a baby.

Their baby.

Every time that thought surfaced, another dozen followed behind it. He thought about his parents, Haley's parents, projects he wanted to do since his career was at its peak. Then there was Haley's work at the boutique and her career, which was also at its peak. Their relationship and the hardships of being young parents. Well, money wasn't going to be a problem, but almost everything else suddenly felt uncertain.

Then there was the strangest part.

Buried beneath the fear was something warm that Jack wasn't ready to examine yet.

The idea that Haley might be carrying their child terrified him, but he couldn't make himself hate the thought.

He looked across the table at her as she spiraled through everything that could possibly go wrong, and his own panic suddenly became less important. Haley's breathing was getting faster. Her fingers were trembling slightly, and she looked close to either crying or passing out.

One of them needed to stay steady.

So Jack forced his heartbeat into the background and stopped trying to solve the next eighteen years inside his head.

"And now I'm pregnant, and I don't even know what happens next because what if everything changes and you have to cancel things because of me, and what if I can't work, and what if my mom says she warned me, and what if your parents think I ruined your life, and what if we're terrible at this because we're nineteen and we barely know how to be adults ourselves?"

Jack watched her for another second before reaching across the table and gently placing his palm over her mouth.

Haley's eyes widened.

Jack held her gaze, trying very hard to keep his own fear from showing. "You need to calm down and take deep breaths because you're about five seconds away from passing out in a café."

Haley stared at him over his hand.

Jack demonstrated a breath himself. "In through your nose, then breathe out slowly."

Haley reluctantly followed him.

Once.

Then again.

Jack breathed with her, partly because he wanted her to calm down and partly because he realized he needed it too.

After several breaths, Haley's shoulders finally lowered.

Jack looked at her for a moment before moving his hand. He wanted to tell her everything would be fine, but the words felt too easy when neither of them knew what happened next.

What he did know was simpler.

Whatever happened, she wasn't facing it alone.

Jack reached for his phone before he could start overthinking again. His fingers weren't quite as steady as he wanted when he typed several quick messages. He read the replies, swallowed, then slipped the phone into his pocket and stood.

"Let's go."

Haley looked up at him with confusion before slowly getting to her feet. "Go? Where?"

Jack held out his hand.

For half a second, his smile almost faltered. He was scared enough that part of him wanted to sit back down. But he wasn't going to run away.

Instead, he looked at the girl he loved and gave her the most reassuring smile he could manage.

"You'll see."

Haley studied his face before placing her hand in his. A small, nervous smile appeared. "Okay."

Jack closed his fingers around hers.

Her hand was trembling.

His was too.

Haley didn't seem to notice.

Jack squeezed her hand and led her toward the exit, trying not to think about how completely different their lives might look by the time they figured out where they were going next.

After stopping at his new house for a few minutes, Jack drove Haley around for the next half hour in silence before driving to the Dunphy house.

[Dunphy House] [Early evening]

The Dunphy house had become unusually crowded within half an hour of Jack's emergency text.

Claire and Phil were already home when the message arrived, and neither of them had managed to get anything useful out of Jack afterward. Gloria and Manny were already there. Jay arrived, followed by Mitchell, Cam, and Lily. Alex and Luke had both been called downstairs, while Jack's parents arrived last, having thankfully been home when their son sent the message.

Nobody knew why Jack had summoned the entire family.

That uncertainty had created an increasingly uncomfortable atmosphere in the living room.

Phil had checked his phone often enough that Claire finally told him staring at it wasn't going to make another message appear. Jay had already complained twice that if someone used the words "family emergency," they should be legally required to explain what the emergency was. Cam had begun suggesting increasingly dramatic possibilities until Mitchell asked him to stop because none of his theories were making anybody feel better.

Alex sat near the end of the couch, watching the adults with quiet curiosity. Luke and Manny had initially tried to guess what Jack wanted, though their theories had quickly deteriorated into increasingly ridiculous possibilities. Lily understood even less and had eventually occupied herself with one of her toys near Mitchell's feet.

Jack's parents weren't doing much better.

His mother had tried calling him once, received no answer, and decided against trying again. His father appeared calmer, though he kept glancing toward the front window whenever a car passed outside.

Phil checked his phone again and frowned. "The message literally said, 'Family emergency. Please get everyone to the Dunphy house. Haley and I are coming.' That's it. No explanation, no follow-up, nothing."

Claire looked toward the front window. "I called Haley three times, and she didn't answer."

Sarah checked her own phone before slipping it back into her purse. "Jack isn't answering either, which means whatever they're dealing with, they're probably dealing with it together."

Cam leaned forward with both hands resting on his knees. "Could they have secretly gotten married? Because if they got married without inviting us, I want everyone to know that I will support them completely after a brief but emotionally necessary period of devastation."

Mitchell looked at him. "Why would Jack call that a family emergency?"

"Because weddings are emergencies when nobody has chosen centerpieces," Cam replied with complete seriousness.

Jay sighed from the couch. "Nobody got married."

Manny glanced toward him. "You don't actually know that."

Jay pointed at him. "I'm choosing the version of reality that creates the least paperwork."

Alex lowered her book slightly. "Maybe Jack's house burned down."

Phil's eyes widened. "Don't say that. I sold him that house."

Claire stared at him. "That's your concern?"

"It passed inspection," Phil replied quickly. "I'm concerned about Jack too, obviously."

Then the sound of an engine reached the driveway.

Phil moved toward the window and looked outside before turning toward everyone. "They're here."
