Chapter 2 - Alpha’s Instinct

Chapter 2

Kael Vaughn felt it before he heard it.

The moment the power awakened, every instinct inside him snapped to attention. He froze mid-step in the forest as a surge of energy tore through the night, sending a tremor through the ground beneath his boots. Inside his mind, his wolf reacted instantly to something ancient, dangerous, and wrong.

Kael slowly lifted his head and scanned the forest. The trees stood still under the pale moonlight, but the air felt different, charged with something unnatural.

Then it came again. Another pulse. Stronger. The ground trembled beneath him.

Kael's jaw tightened. There was only one force capable of releasing energy like that.

The Fifth Blood.

For centuries, it had been a legend whispered among the bloodlines. A warning passed from one Alpha to the next. If the Fifth Blood awakened, balance would break, and war would follow.

Kael had spent his entire life protecting that balance. Now the prophecy was real.

Behind him, movement broke the silence. Members of his pack stepped out from the shadows, their expressions tense. Ryder, his Beta, moved forward first.

"You felt that too," he said.

Kael didn't answer immediately. His gaze had already shifted toward the distant lights of the human town at the edge of their territory. The energy was coming from there, growing stronger by the second.

"Yes," Kael said at last, his voice low and controlled.

Ryder crossed his arms. "That wasn't wolf energy."

"No," Kael replied. "That was bloodline power."

Silence settled over the group. One of the younger wolves shifted uneasily. "You think it's the prophecy?"

Kael didn't answer, but he didn't need to.

Four bloodlines ruled the supernatural world—the Wolf, the Vampire, the Witch, and the Fae. Each controlled their own territory and power. But beneath their history, there was another name, one erased from records.

The Fifth Blood.

A bloodline so dangerous that the others had tried to erase it completely.

Ryder exhaled slowly. "If the council hears about this…"

"They will," Kael cut in. The council always knew. And when they did, they would send hunters.

Hunters with one purpose.

Kill the Fifth Blood before it became a threat.

Kael's gaze remained fixed on the town. Another surge rippled through the air, closer now.

His wolf stirred violently. But not with fear. With something else.

A pull.

It felt like something was dragging him forward, locking onto him and refusing to let go.

Kael frowned. That should not be possible. His instincts were always controlled. Precise.

This was different. It felt wrong.

His wolf growled inside him, the word clear in his mind.

Mine.

Kael went still.

"What did you say?" Ryder asked.

Kael hadn't realized he had spoken. "Nothing."

But the pull only grew stronger. It was no longer a feeling.

It wasn't just a feeling anymore. It was a command pressing against his mind.

Go. Now.

Ryder studied him closely. "Alpha?"

Kael clenched his jaw. "Something is happening in that town."

"You want to check it out?"

"Yes."

Ryder nodded. "I'll bring the pack."

"No."

The answer came immediately.

Ryder raised an eyebrow. "You're going alone?"

Kael hesitated. Every instinct inside him pushed him forward, not warning him to stay back, but forcing him to move.

Now.

"Yes," he said finally.

"This could be a trap," Ryder warned.

Kael's expression hardened. "Then whoever set it will regret it."

Without another word, he stepped forward.

The shift came instantly. Bones cracked. Muscles expanded. In seconds, a massive black wolf stood where Kael had been.

His golden eyes burned under the moonlight.

Then he ran.

The forest blurred as he moved, wind rushing past him. The scent of rain and pine filled the air, but something else cut through it.

Blood.

Kael slowed slightly, lifting his nose as the scent sharpened. The pull was stronger now, pulling him forward without hesitation.

It wasn't wolf. It wasn't human. It was something else entirely.

His wolf growled again, the word clear in his mind.

Mine.

Kael pushed forward, breaking through the last line of trees. The human town came into view. Lights flickered in the distance as a small house stood at the end of a narrow street.

Its windows were shattered, and the front door hung open. Power rolled out of the house in steady waves.

Kael slowed as every instinct sharpened at once. He could feel the danger, smell the blood, and sense the power.

And something else. Something that made his chest tighten.

He shifted back into human form just outside the door, barely noticing the rain soaking his skin.

Voices echoed from inside, male, cold, and controlled.

Hunters.

Kael stepped forward silently. Then the air inside exploded. Glass shattered. Wind tore through the house.

And in that moment, he felt it. The bond. It hit him hard.

Kael staggered as his wolf went completely still. For a second, he couldn't breathe.

Because standing in the center of the ruined kitchen, silver light glowing beneath her skin, was a young woman.

The moment their eyes met, something clicked deep inside him. A name surfaced in his mind without warning.

Ariana.

His wolf went completely still. Then it spoke. Mate. Kael's blood ran cold.

No. That was impossible. His gaze dropped to the silver light in her veins, and the truth hit him.

The Fifth Blood.

His mate.

The most dangerous bloodline in existence. And between them, hunters.

One of them turned slowly toward the doorway and smiled.

"Well," the hunter said calmly, "looks like the Alpha finally arrived."

He lifted a blade to Ariana's throat.

Kael's wolf surged with fury.

"If you take one more step…" the hunter said quietly.

The blade pressed closer to her skin.

"She dies."
