Chapter 5: The Road That Calls

The wind grew colder the farther Kael walked.

Eryndor lay behind him now—its lanterns distant, dim, and fading. Ahead, the road stretched into darkness, winding toward the unseen horizon where the Blackstone Mountains loomed like silent giants.

Kael slowed.

His mind screamed at him to stop.

Turn back.

This isn't you.

But his body… his body didn't listen.

Each step felt guided, pulled forward by something deeper than thought.

Come…

The whisper returned.

Clearer this time.

Closer.

Kael clenched his fists. "No."

He stopped walking.

For the first time since leaving the city, he forced his feet to stay still.

"I'm not going anywhere."

Silence answered him.

Then—

Pain.

It struck without warning.

A sharp, burning sensation tore through his chest, dropping him to his knees. He gasped, clutching at his shirt as that strange energy surged again beneath his skin.

Brighter now.

Stronger.

Cracks of pale light flickered across his arms, pulsing in rhythm with his heartbeat.

"Stop…!" Kael gritted out.

But the power didn't obey.

It expanded.

And then—

He saw it.

Not with his eyes.

But inside his mind.

A mountain.

Black stone, jagged and endless.

The sky above it churned with dark clouds, twisted and unnatural. At its peak stood something ancient—a broken structure carved into the rock itself, like a forgotten throne swallowed by time.

Chains.

Massive, glowing chains.

Wrapped around something buried deep within the mountain.

Holding it.

Sealing it.

Kael screamed and the vision shattered.

He collapsed forward, breathing hard, his hands trembling against the cold ground.

"The seal…" he whispered.

The words came without thought.

Without understanding.

Yet he knew they were true.

"You've seen it."

Kael froze.

That voice—

It wasn't the whisper.

It was real.

He turned sharply.

A figure stood on the road behind him.

Cloaked.

Still.

Watching.

Kael struggled to his feet. "Who are you?"

The figure didn't answer immediately.

Instead, they stepped forward, the faint moonlight catching the edge of a silver emblem—a broken crown.

Kael's breath caught.

Something about it felt… familiar.

Wrong.

"You shouldn't have come this far," the figure said at last.

A woman's voice.

Calm. Controlled.

"But then again… I suppose you didn't have a choice."

Kael frowned. "What are you talking about?"

Her gaze didn't waver.

"You felt it, didn't you?" she said. "The call."

Kael hesitated.

"…Yes."

She studied him for a moment longer, as if weighing something unseen.

"Then it's worse than we thought."

Kael's patience snapped. "Start explaining."

The woman reached up and pulled back her hood.

Her face was sharp, her eyes cold but not unkind—marked by experience far beyond her years.

"You're connected to it," she said plainly.

"To what?" Kael demanded.

She took another step closer.

"To what's buried beneath the Blackstone Mountains."

Kael's chest tightened.

"The seal…" he said quietly.

A flicker of surprise crossed her face.

"So you have seen it."

Silence stretched between them.

The wind howled softly across the open road.

"Then listen carefully," she said.

"Because if you keep walking…"

Her eyes locked onto his.

"You won't be coming back."

Kael let out a bitter breath. "You think I want this?"

The woman said nothing.

"I didn't ask for any of this!" he continued. "I don't even know what's happening to me!"

"Then stop pretending you're in control," she replied sharply.

That hit harder than he expected.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then she asked:

"What did you see?"

Kael hesitated… then answered.

"The mountain. Chains. Something sealed inside."

He swallowed.

"…Something alive."

The woman closed her eyes briefly.

"Then it's already reaching for you."

Kael's heart skipped.

"What does that mean?"

She looked at him again.

"It means," she said slowly, "you're not just hearing the call."

A pause.

"You're part of it."

The wind died.

The world seemed to hold its breath.

Behind Kael—

Something moved.

The woman's expression changed instantly.

"Don't move," she said.

Too late.

A low growl echoed from the darkness beyond the road.

Deep.

Unnatural.

Hungry.

Kael turned.

From the shadows at the edge of the wilds, a shape emerged.

Then another.

Eyes glowed in the dark.

Bodies twisted, wrong, like they didn't belong in this world.

"They found you faster than I expected," the woman muttered.

Kael's pulse thundered. "What are those things?"

Her gaze hardened.

"Proof," she said, "that the Forgotten is waking up."

The creatures stepped closer.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Circling.

The woman lowered her stance slightly.

"Stay behind me if you want to live."

Kael didn't move.

Fear gripped him—but beneath it…

That same pull stirred again.

The creatures stopped.

Watching him.

Not her.

Him.

One of them tilted its head.

Then—

It stepped forward.

Kael's breath caught.

"They're not attacking…"

The woman's voice dropped.

"No."

A pause.

"They're waiting."

"For what?" Kael whispered.

The creature opened its mouth—

Not to roar.

Not to attack.

But to speak.

A broken, distorted voice clawed its way out:

"...Heir…"

Everything went still.

The woman's eyes widened in shock.

Kael's blood ran cold.

The creature took another step forward.

"…Return…"

Kael didn't realize he was moving until his foot stepped forward.

"Stop!" the woman snapped, grabbing his arm.

The moment she touched him—

The light beneath his skin flared violently.

The creatures recoiled.

Hissing.

Afraid.

Kael gasped as the energy surged again, stronger than before.

Uncontrolled.

Alive.

The woman stared at him.

Not with fear.

But with realization.

"…So it's true," she whispered.

Kael looked at his glowing hands.

At the creatures bowing slightly before him.

At the road leading to the mountains.

And for the first time—

He understood.

This wasn't just calling him.

It was waiting for him.
