Chapter 12 - WHISPER OF THE HEART.

CHAPTER TEN

THE GIFT.

Morning arrive quietly, too quietly. For the first time in days, there were no messages, No threats No shadows pressing in from the outside and yet the silence didn't feel like peace. It felt like anticipation. Lena Stood by the window, arms folded gently as she watched the city wake beneath her. People moved normally, cars passed and life continued. As if nothing dangerous was unfolding behind the closed doors. "You thinking again." Adrian's Voice came from behind her soft careful. Lena turned slightly, a faint smile, touching her lips. "You said that like it's a bad thing." "It's usually is." she let out a quiet breath, "It's just strange." "What is?" "Be quiet." Adrian Stepped closer, her expression thoughtful."Victor doesn't stay quiet for long." " I know," Lena said. A pause. "Which is why this feels wrong." They stood in silence for a moment, not distant, but close comfortable, and yet something unspoken Lingered between them. Lena turned fully to face him. Her voice softened. "Last night.." Adrian's gaze held hers. "Yes." She hesitated, not out of doubt because the moment mattered. "That wasn't just fear, was it?" She asked quietly. "No." Adrian said. No hesitation, no confusion. Lena's heart warm slightly. "Good," she whispered. A faint shift in his expression followed, something gentler less guarded. "I'm not good at this," Adrian admitted. "At what?" "This feeling , letting someone in." "You're doing fine." "I don't feel like I'm. " "You're," she insisted softly. "Because you're trying." That word stayed with him. Trying. Adrian reached into his pocket slowly. Lena noticed. "What is it?" He didn't answer right away. Instead, he pulled out something small, wrapped, simple. Lena blinked in surprise. "Adrian.." He looked almost uncertain. "I don't usually do things like this," he said. "You already said that." A faint, almost shy tension flickered across his face. "This isn't about what I usually do." He held the small object out to her. " It's for you." Lena hesitated, not because she didn't want it, but because of what it meant. "Why?" She asked softly. Adrian voice lowered. "Because in the middle of everything happening.." a pause , then. "I wanted you to have something that wasn't connected to fear." Her heart tightened, slowly, she took it. Her fingers brushing his briefly, warm and gentle. She unwrapped it carefully, inside a delicate necklace, simple, elegant with a small silver pendant shaped like a heartbeat. Lena's breath caught , "it's beautiful," she whispered. Adrian watched her closely. "I saw it and it reminded me of you, so o got it."

She looked up. " Why?" "Because it's steady," he said, even when everything else isn't." The meaning settled deep within her. "This isn't just a gift," Lena said quietly. "No." Adrian admitted. "It's not." Silence followed, but this time it was full of something warm something growing. Lena stepped closer. "Help me put it on?" Adrian nodded. She turned, lifting her hair slightly. He moved behind her, his fingers brushing gently against her skin as he fastened the necklace. The touch lingered than necessary. Neither of them pulled away. "You're shaking," Lena said softly. Adrian paused "I'm not used to this." She turned back to face him, "and I'm?" A small smile appeared between them. Her hands lifted, resting lightly against his chest. "I like this version of you." She whispered. Adrian's voice dropped. "There aren't many versions." "Then maybe there should be. Their eyes locked and once again the world outside faded. Adrian's hands found hers gently, naturally. "This changes things." Her voice said quietly. Lena nodded "i know." "And you're okay with that?" Smiled softly, "I am more than okay." He stepped closer not rushed not hesitant, just real. "I don't want to lose this," he admitted. Lena's voice softened. "Then don't let fear take it away." Their foreheads touched lightly , a quietly moment, a fragile promise. And yet outside, the danger hadn't disappeared. It had only shifted.
