CHAPTER NINE
THE HIDDEN ENEMY
The room no longer felt the same, moments ago , it had been filled with warmth, soft breath, quiet closeness, the lingering memory of something new and fragile. Now.. it felt watched. Lena stood frozen, her eyes locked on Adrian's phone. The message still glowed on the screen, "beautiful moments." Her chest tightened. "He saw us," she whispered. Adrian didn't respond immediately, but the way his body stiffened said enough. "Yes," he said finally, his voice low. "He did." The warmth from moments ago vanished completely. Replaced by something cold, something calculating and dangerous. Lena wrapped her arms around herself, trying to steady the sudden rush of unease. "How?" She asked. "How is that even possible?" Adrian's eyes scanned the room instinctively, windows, corners and shadows. "Victor doesn't miss details," he said. "If he's watching, that means he's closer than we thought. Lena's heartbeat quickened, "closer.. as.. here?" "Maybe not inside ," Adrian replied "but close enough." The silence that followed was suffocating, not because nothing was happening but because something was, somewhere hidden. Lena moved closer to him instinctively seeking reassurance. "Adrian.." he looked at her, and for a moment , the hardness in his expression softened. "I won't let anything happen to you,"he said. The words were firm , protective, but this time they carried weight. Because now the danger was real.
Lena studied his face. "You keep saying that." She whispered. "And I mean it." "But what if you can't control this ?" She asked gently. That question lingered longer than expected. Adrian didn't answer right away, because for the first time he wasn't completely sure. Lena saw it, that tiny flicker of uncertainty and instead of fear she stepped closer. "You don't have to carry this alone ," she said softly. Adrian's gaze hardened again, but not in resistance, in conflict. "I'm used to it." "That doesn't mean it's right." "It's necessary." Lena shook her head. "No," she said. "What's necessary is facing things together." The word together settled deeply between them. Adrian looked at her like she had just offered him something he didn't know how to accept. Or something he had denied himself for too long. "You're not part of this world," he said quietly. "And maybe I don't want to be." Lena replied "but I'm already in it." A pause then "and I'm not leaving you in it alone." That hit harder than any argument. Harder than any logic. Adrian exhale slowly, running a hand through his hair. "You don't understand what he's capable of." "Then show me ," she said. He frowned. " what?" "Stop hiding things from me," Lena continued. "If I'm a target now , I deserve to know what I'm facing. Adrian studded her carefully, she wasn't afraid. Or at least she wasn't letting fear control her. "You're stronger than you think," he said. Lena gave a faint smile. "I know." For a brief moment, despite everything there's was warmth again. But it didn't last. Another vibration. Adrian's phone, both of them froze. Slowly he looked down, de didn't want to open it, but he did. "You're predictable , Adrian." Lena's stomach dropped. Adrian's jaw tightened, another message followed. "You always care too much." The words cut deeper than they should have. Because they weren't just threats. They were personal. Lena looked at Adrian, "he knows you." Adrian didn't deny it. "He used to." The past lingered heavily in those words. "Who is he?" Lena asked softly, "not just a name ," " I mean who is he to you ?" Adrian hesitated, then, "he's someone who believes emotions are weakness, Lena's voice lowered. "And you don't?" A pause, then Adrian looked at her. "No," he said. That answer changed something, because now , this wasn't about survival it was about belief. Another message came in faster this time, more aggressive. " let's test that. Lena felt a chill run through her. "What does that mean?" She asked. Adrian's voice was quiet., "it means he's going to push harder." The tension in the room thickened. Lena stepped closer again despite everything, despite the fear. Her voice softened. "Then we don't break. Adrian looked her. And something in his expression shifted. " you are not afraid?" He asked. Lena met his gaze. "I'm." She admitted. A small pause then. "But not enough to walk away." The honesty in her voice grounded him. Slowly Adrian reached for her. Not urgently , not out of panic but with quiet intention. His hands found hers. And held it firm, steady this time. It wasn't about romance alone it was about choice. "I won't let him use this against us ," he said. Lena's fingers tightened slightly around his. "Then don't give him that power." Their eyes met again and this time, there was no hesitation. Because whatever this was between them, it wasn't weakness it was strength. Outside, hidden in the shadows of a parked car across the street. A figure sat in complete stillness, watching and waiting. A faint phone illuminated his face just enough to reveal a cold , calculating smile. Victor. His eyes remained fixed on the apartment window. "Let's see how strong you really are,"he murmured. His thumb hovered over the screen, then pressed send. Inside the apartment, Adrian's phone buzzed once more. He looked down and for the first time. Something close to anger burned in his eyes. "This is just the beginning." The game had officially begun. And this time, there was no turning back.
