The instant the colossal shadow beast unfurled its wings, the world seemed to shrink under its presence, as though reality itself struggled to contain it, and the air turned heavy enough to make every breath feel forced. Even Lyra's golden glow dimmed slightly under the pressure. Aarav stood firm, his instincts sharper than ever, realizing this was no unstable fragment—they were facing something complete, something aware. Meera steadied herself beside him, calm yet ready, while Rayan, for once, had nothing to say. Above them, Zippu floated tensely. "This isn't random," he warned. "That Beast is here for a reason."
The shadow figure stepped forward, its voice calm and controlled. "You have been observed," it said. Aarav didn't step back. "Then stop sending messengers," he replied. "Send the one who's watching." A brief silence followed before the figure moved aside—and the Beast advanced. Its form shifted like living darkness, wings trailing shadows across the ground, its glowing eyes fixed not with rage, but with judgment. When it roared, the sound tore through the alley, cracking walls and shattering glass as a powerful shockwave slammed into them.
Aarav ignited his blue energy to hold his ground while Meera raised her hand, Lyra expanding into a radiant shield that pushed back against the crushing force. But before they could recover, the Beast moved—fast. In a single motion, it struck Aarav, throwing him back into the wall with brutal force. "Aarav!" Meera shouted as Lyra rose instantly, golden light clashing against the darkness in a massive burst of energy. The ground trembled under the impact, yet even in that chaos, Aarav realized something—this wasn't a killing blow. The Beast was holding back.
"It's testing you," Zippu said urgently. And then, suddenly, the Beast stopped. Its gaze shifted—locking directly onto Aarav. A low growl echoed, not wild but deliberate. A challenge. Aarav understood. "This isn't her fight," he said quietly, stepping forward alone despite Meera's warning. The moment stretched as the Beast charged again—but Aarav didn't raise his guard. Time slowed, the world dimmed, and the shadows behind him responded.
Darkness split open.
Two piercing blue eyes appeared.
Nox stepped forward, more solid, more real than before. The war Beast halted instantly, recognizing something equal. Aarav exhaled softly. "You came." Nox didn't look at him. Its voice echoed in his mind, cold and steady. "This is not your battle… this is your proving." In the next instant, both Beasts moved, colliding with devastating force. The impact sent shockwaves tearing through the alley as Lyra shielded Meera and Rayan struggled to stay on his feet. Nox moved with precision and speed, countering the war Beast's raw power in a brutal clash of shadow against shadow.
Aarav felt everything—the strikes, the force, the pain. The connection wasn't complete, but it was real. When the war Beast surged forward and struck Nox hard enough to destabilize it for a moment, Aarav felt a sharp pain that wasn't his own. "Nox…" he whispered, clenching his fist. But the wolf rose again, stronger, its eyes burning brighter. Just as the battle was about to escalate further, everything stopped. The shadow figure stepped forward and gave a single command. "That is enough." Instantly, the Beast froze.
"The King has seen enough," the figure said calmly. Silence fell, heavy and unfinished. The Beast stepped back slowly, its gaze lingering on Nox—not with anger, but recognition—before both it and the figure dissolved into the shadows and vanished completely. The alley fell silent again, leaving only destruction behind. Rayan finally exhaled. "I am never sleeping peacefully again." Meera rushed to Aarav, asking if he was alright, but Aarav remained still, staring ahead. Nox's presence faded—but this time, it didn't feel distant. Zippu spoke quietly, "This wasn't an attack… it was a selection." Aarav's eyes hardened. "Then next time," he said slowly, "we won't just be tested."
