Chapter 21 - Who is Zippu...?

The silence in Aarav's room felt suffocating. Even after the shadow had returned to normal, the tension hadn't left. It lingered in the air, heavy and unsettling, like something invisible was still watching. Aarav stood motionless, his eyes fixed on the wall where it had happened. His own voice… coming from something that wasn't him. That moment kept replaying in his mind. "…It spoke," he said quietly, almost to himself.

Zippu floated nearby, his usual playful energy completely gone. His glow was dim, steady, serious. "…Yes," he replied.

Aarav slowly turned toward him. His expression had changed. There was fear—but also determination. "No more half-truths," he said firmly. "Tell me everything."

For a moment, Zippu didn't answer. As if he was deciding how much to reveal. Then he let out a slow breath.

"What you saw… is not just a shadow," Zippu began. "It's a fragment. A piece of something far more dangerous than any creature you've faced."

Aarav's eyes narrowed. "…The Shadow King."

Zippu nodded slightly.

The room felt colder.

"That's not possible," Aarav said immediately. "We never even saw him."

"You didn't need to," Zippu replied. "The Dream World doesn't work like your world. You don't have to meet something… to be affected by it."

Aarav stayed silent, processing every word.

Zippu continued, his voice calm but heavy. "The Dream World is not just a place. It's a reflection. Thoughts, fears, emotions… they take form there. That's why the creatures exist. They aren't random. They are created."

"Created?" Aarav asked.

"From energy," Zippu said. "From minds. From darkness."

Aarav's gaze dropped slightly. "…So that thing… is part of that darkness?"

"Yes," Zippu said. "But not just any darkness."

He paused.

"It's part of him."

Silence filled the room again.

Aarav felt his chest tighten. "Why me?"

Zippu didn't hesitate this time. "Because you connected with it."

Aarav looked up sharply. "What?"

"During the fight," Zippu explained. "When you pushed your limits… when your emotions spiked… you opened a link. And something used that moment."

Aarav clenched his fists. "So this is my fault?"

"No," Zippu said firmly. "It's not that simple."

Aarav let out a frustrated breath, running his hand through his hair. "Then explain it simply!"

Zippu's glow flickered slightly. "The fragment doesn't control you… yet. But it's learning. Observing. Growing."

Aarav's heart skipped a beat. "…Growing?"

"It feeds on instability," Zippu continued. "Fear. Doubt. Anger. The more you lose control… the stronger it becomes."

Aarav froze.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The strength.

The reactions.

The shadow moving on its own.

"…So if I lose control…"

Zippu's voice turned serious. "…it gains control."

The words hit harder than anything before.

For the first time, Aarav looked genuinely shaken. Not because of a creature. Not because of a fight. But because the danger… was inside him.

---

The next day, things didn't feel any easier. Aarav walked into school, trying to act normal, but his thoughts were far away. Every reflection caught his attention. Every shadow made him uneasy. It was exhausting.

Rayan immediately noticed. "Bro, you look like you're fighting an invisible villain," he said casually.

Aarav forced a weak smile. "…Something like that."

Meera turned this time. Her eyes met Aarav's. She didn't ask questions—but she didn't look away either. She knew something was wrong. And she wasn't going to ignore it.

---

Later, the three of them stood together on the rooftop. The same place where everything had started. But now, it felt different. Heavier.

"You're going to tell us," Meera said calmly, looking at Aarav.

It wasn't a question.

Aarav hesitated for a second. Then he exhaled slowly. "…There's something inside me."

Rayan blinked. "…Okay, that sentence already sounds bad."

Aarav didn't react. "It's not a joke."

The seriousness in his voice silenced Rayan instantly.

Zippu appeared beside them, floating quietly.

Meera's expression didn't change—but her eyes sharpened. "Explain."

Zippu nodded. "What Aarav has… is a fragment of the Shadow King."

The air felt heavier again.

Rayan let out a slow breath. "…Why does it always come back to something worse?"

Zippu continued, "If the fragment grows strong enough… it can reconnect to its source."

Meera's voice dropped slightly. "…You mean him."

"Yes," Zippu said.

Aarav looked down at his own shadow. It looked normal. Silent. Harmless.

But now… he knew better.

---

For a few seconds, no one spoke.

Then Meera stepped closer. "We'll deal with it," she said calmly.

Aarav looked up at her. "…What if I can't control it?"

Meera didn't hesitate. "Then we'll help you."

Rayan raised his hand slightly. "Yeah… and if it gets too dangerous… I'll knock you out."

Aarav almost smiled.

Almost.

---

That night, Aarav stood alone again. The room was dark. Silent.

He looked at the wall.

His shadow stood still.

Perfectly normal.

For now.

Aarav took a deep breath. "…I'm not afraid of you," he said quietly.

For a moment—nothing happened.

Then…

the shadow shifted slightly.

Barely noticeable.

And a faint whisper echoed in the silence—

"…You will be."

Aarav's eyes widened.

The shadow returned to normal.

But this time…

it didn't feel like it was hiding anymore.

It felt like it was waiting.
