Chapter 25 — Bloodline Collapse
The laboratory shook violently. Alarms shrieked, red lights flickering across the crystalline consoles. Energy pulses erupted from the Core Stabilization Engine as the air filled with the acrid tang of ozone and burning circuits. Ruby's voice, calm but tense, filled the chamber.
"Critical instability detected. DNA sequences are conflicting at maximum thresholds. Emergency protocols engaged."
Von-Ra's body arched in agony, his voice a ragged scream. "AACKK—! WHAT… IS… HAPPENING TO ME!"
Inside his mind, three voices shouted over one another.
Viltrumite: "You are weak. Dominate. Destroy. Bend everything to your will or perish!"
Kryptonian: "No… balance. Control. The lives of millions depend on you. Do not let instinct override reason!"
Rao's Essence: "My child… you carry my burden. Strength without guidance will destroy more than your flesh. Choose the path of duty."
Von-Ra's mind swirled in chaos, every thought fracturing into three competing streams. His Viltrumite instincts urged him to lash out, to force the bloodlines into submission through sheer will. But the Kryptonian heritage reminded him of morality, strategy, and the lives at stake. Rao's divine essence reminded him that his choices would echo across time, shaping Krypton's fate.
Ruby's voice cut through the tumult. "Master, brute force will destabilize your cellular integrity. Attempting to dominate the Viltrumite sequence without proper calibration will result in systemic failure. Life support cannot compensate for total collapse!"
Von-Ra's hands clutched at his head. "I… I CAN'T… CONTROL IT!"
Outside the chamber, the alliance had arrived. Dru-Zod, stoic yet tense, stood at the edge of the observation platform. Alura In-Ze covered her mouth with trembling hands, Lara Lor-Van tried to steady her daughter Kara, who had sprinted to the center of the laboratory screaming:
"BWIIIG BWODEEEERRRR! UWAHHHH! WHAT'S HAPPENED TO YOU, BROTHER VON!!"
Koryn Zod gritted his teeth, silent, fists clenched, eyes flicking between the contorted form of Von-Ra and the containment systems.
Ruby projected a holographic readout. "Life signs dropping. Vital integrity compromised. Three genetic sequences—Kryptonian, Viltrumite, and Rao's divine essence—are irreconcilably clashing. Immediate intervention is required, or Master will cease to function."
Zor-El's eyes reflected both guilt and fear. "The Viltrumite bloodline cannot fully awaken until the host reaches biological adulthood. the divine essence of Rao resists domination by alien DNA. The fusion was never guaranteed."
Dru-Zod's usually calm voice was tight with anger. "You experimented with your own son, Zor-El? And now he's dying because of your arrogance?"
Jor-El's voice cut in, trembling with urgency. "Dru, calm yourself. Now is not the time for blame. We need to stabilize him before the council learns of this disaster."
Von-Ra's body convulsed violently, black hair falling in clumps, blood streaming from his ears, nose, and mouth. His muscles tore, reformed, and tore again in a grotesque symphony of agony. His chest heaved, lungs struggling against a body fighting itself.
"RUBY! NOW! DIAGNOSE EVERYTHING! EVERY STRAND! EVERY CELL!" Von-Ra roared through the pain, eyes wild.
Ruby's calm tone carried over the chaos. "Analysis complete. Master's Viltrumite DNA is in uncontrolled activation, overwhelming cellular repair mechanisms. Core stabilization fields are insufficient to contain the energy surges. Immediate physical intervention is impossible without lethal risk to the operator."
Kara screamed, rushing closer. "I won't let you die! Stay with me, Brother!"
Alura held her back. "Kara! You cannot! He's…!"
Dru-Zod stepped closer to the edge of the platform. "If he dies here, Krypton loses more than one life. But if we act now… we might all perish trying to intervene."
Von-Ra's mind flickered between visions: a swirling galaxy, the Viltrumite homeworld's destruction, the radiant sun Rao sacrificing himself, and visions of Krypton's dying core.
Viltrumite: "You are unworthy! Suffer or die!"
Kryptonian: "You must endure. Think beyond the pain!"
Rao's Essence: "Your duty is to all, not yourself. Let go if you must."
Von-Ra's body twisted violently, the air around him shimmering as the energy from his DNA clashed with reality itself. Ruby's voice remained steady, a lifeline amidst chaos.
"Master Von-Ra… stabilization failure imminent."
"No… NO! I WON'T… I—" His scream tore off into the laboratory, echoing against the walls, bouncing off the containment fields, shattering the air.
Then, silence.
The body of Von-Ra collapsed fully. The convulsions ceased. The blood pooled around him. The glow of his golden eyes dimmed to nothing.
Kara fell to her knees beside him, wailing uncontrollably. "BROTHER! NO! PLEASE!"
Alura covered her face with trembling hands, sobs choking her. "He… he can't be gone… not now!"
Dru-Zod's face was grim, jaw clenched, but his voice quiet. "Even the strongest potential among us… even a combination of bloodlines… can fail."
Ruby's voice, calm but tinged with worry, reported: "Vital signs absent. Cellular collapse complete. Prognosis: death."
Zor-El sank to his knees beside his son's inert form, voice barely audible. "I… I… I failed you… My son…"
Jor-El knelt beside him, eyes glistening with tears. "We have… underestimated the weight of combining three legacies. Rao's divine essence… the Viltrumite strength… Kryptonian lineage… it is too much for one body."
Even Koryn, silent until now, whispered, barely audible, "Von… Ra… I… I should have protected you…"
