Chapter 27 — Shadows of Power
The Grand Hall of Krypton's Council was a gleaming expanse of crystalline walls and towering pillars, each etched with symbols of authority and tradition. Councilors murmured among themselves, voices edged with curiosity and ambition. At the center, Alura and Ruby floating poised, flanking the newly constructed Core Stabilization Device, its faint hum echoing against the polished floors.
Von-Ra leaned slightly against a pillar at the back, eyes narrowed, observing every subtle glance, every gesture, and every whispered calculation. To the council, he was merely another dignitary present for the demonstration. To himself, he was the only one who knew the truth: he had returned, reborn, and stronger than ever.
Ruby's holographic projection pulsed as Alura-Ze began the explanation. "Honored councilors, the device before you stabilizes planetary core energy fluctuations. Krypton's increasing mining operations have created critical instability. Without intervention, catastrophic collapse is inevitable."
A murmur rippled through the chamber.
Councilor Thane, a thin, hawk-faced man, spoke first. "And you claim this… device will prevent such disaster? Who will control it?"
Alura stepped forward. "It will be administered jointly, under council oversight. But time is of the essence. Continued mining within the solar system exacerbates the core instability. We recommend resource acquisition from outside the solar system to reduce strain."
Thane's eyes narrowed, skeptical. "And yet you offer us ownership? Or… are you asking us to take responsibility while the risk remains elsewhere?"
Councilor Durn, heavyset and brash, leaned forward. "If we claim this device, we ensure its power… but how do we know it will serve Krypton's best interests, and not the inventors' ambitions?"
Alura exchanged a subtle glance with Ruby, who merely projected calm waves of light over the device. Von-Ra's eyes flickered, absorbing every reaction, storing every angle for future leverage.
As debate spiraled, Von-Ra stepped back to a shadowed corner of the chamber. Alone, he whispered under his breath, the voice barely audible:
"I never thought I'll be reincarnated as a Kryptonian in my second life. All those bad luck from my life on Earth seems a preparation for my second life. Now I know why my luck in my previous life was so shitty—because it was all meant to be spent on my second life, and I hit a jackpot."
He ran a hand through his hair, eyes glinting faintly. "Not just that… I became a Kryptonian, but in the noble house of El, with the divine bloodline of Rao and the conquerors' strength of the Viltrumite. I need to check now if my weaknesses… red sun, kryptonite… were erased alongside the combination of my three bloodlines."
Von-Ra flexed his fingers, feeling the subtle surge of energy coursing through him. The crimson sheen of his hair, hinted at the transformation already underway. He felt stronger, faster, sharper. His body was still evolving, testing the limits of the bloodline fusion Ruby had helped stabilize.
Back in the council chamber, voices rose in heated debate. Thane argued that the device should be kept as a strategic deterrent, never actually used. Durn countered that Krypton could no longer afford hesitation. "We must act, or our planet will collapse. This is not a matter of pride—it is survival."
Alura's calm, firm tone cut through. "The device is operational, and if deployed incorrectly, it could destabilize more than it protects. Careful implementation is required. Mining operations must shift beyond the solar system to maintain long-term stability."
Von-Ra remained silent, observing the subtle greed and hesitation of the councilors. To the world, he was merely attending a demonstration. To himself, he was monitoring, calculating, preparing. His hair shifted imperceptibly in color, from black to a crimson. His strength, reflexes, and awareness increased with each passing hour.
Days passed. While the council squabbled over ownership and theoretical use of the Core Stabilization Device, Von-Ra retreated into the hidden chambers of the El estate. Alone, he tested his body, tracing energy through his veins, feeling the harmonized bloodlines push the limits of what any Kryptonian—or Viltrumite—could endure.
"They have no idea," he mused, voice low and filled with satisfaction. "They think this device is the pinnacle of power. But it's only a tool. The true strength lies within me, evolving in secret."
By the time the council reached no conclusion, Von-Ra's crimson hair had grown past his shoulders, a subtle herald of the fused bloodlines' awakening. Every movement radiated raw power, his reflexes perfect, his senses sharp. Krypton's leaders were blind to the transformation happening quietly behind the polished veneer of diplomacy and debate.
Von-Ra smiled faintly, recalling the struggle of his Earthly life. Every misfortune, every failure, every moment of despair had led him here. Not as a man bound to mortality, but as a godlike hybrid with the strength, wisdom, and cunning to influence the course of Krypton itself.
And yet, the council remained oblivious.
