Chapter 20 - Chapter 36-37

Chapter 36 – A New Beginning in a New City

New York, USA – May 2015

The sound of cars and horns echoed through the bustling streets of Manhattan. New York was a world apart, completely different from any battlefield, military base, or secret operations center.

And that was exactly what Jason Gibbs and Ziva David needed.

After years living in the shadows, they decided to choose the unknown, but this time, of their own free will.

New York would be their first destination, but not their last.

Because now, they lived like nomads, experiencing life far from their old ghosts.

The small apartment in the Greenwich Village neighborhood was nothing special. Exposed brick walls, large windows, and simple furniture.

Jason put his suitcase down, observing the space around him.

"Definitely different from what we're used to."

Ziva, who was opening a bottle of wine, smiled slightly.

— What's wrong? Missing sleeping on the floor of a tent in the middle of the desert?

Jason laughed, taking off his coat and throwing it on the sofa.

— Maybe just a little.

She handed him a glass of wine and raised hers in a silent toast.

— To freedom.

Jason clinked glasses against hers.

— To freedom.

The Unknown of Normal Life

In the following days, they began to adapt to the new rhythm.

Jason discovered that buying groceries in a busy New York market could be more chaotic than a battlefield.

Ziva enjoyed watching him deal with simple things, like trying to order coffee and getting lost in the middle of an overly elaborate menu.

— You're staring at that coffee machine like it's a target. — she teased.

Jason huffed, holding his cup.

— Why are there fifty kinds of coffee? Can't it just be… coffee?

Ziva laughed, taking his order.

"Perhaps this is your greatest challenge yet."

One night, sitting on the balcony of their apartment, watching the city lights, Jason finally broke the silence.

"Do you think we can really live like this?"

Ziva, who had her feet up on the chair, looked at him thoughtfully.

"Live without fighting? Without always having to be on alert?"

Jason nodded slowly.

She sighed.

"It will take time. But I think we deserve to try."

Jason looked at the horizon.

"I think so."

Ziva smiled and leaned towards him.

"Besides… I'm curious to see how you fare in civilian life."

Jason raised an eyebrow.

"Oh, so this is an experiment now?"

Laughing, she gave him a light kiss.

"Perhaps."

Jason pulled her closer.

— So let's make this experiment last.

Life wouldn't be easy.

But for the first time in years, they had a choice.

New York was just the first step.

But the whole world was waiting for them.

And this time, no missions, no orders, no war.

Just the two of them… and the unknown future.

Chapter 37 – A New Rhythm

New York – August 2015

The morning sun streamed through the large windows of the Greenwich Village apartment, illuminating the warm tones of the exposed brick and creating soft shadows on the dark wood floor.

Jason Gibbs woke feeling a pleasant weight on his chest.

Ziva David slept soundly, her head resting against him, her dark hair spread over her shoulder and the sheet lightly tangled around her legs.

He didn't move.

Not because he was trapped, but because he didn't want to be anywhere else.

He stayed there, listening to her breathing, feeling the warmth of her body against his.

The simple fact of waking up like this, without the sound of a helicopter, without a mission alert, without the need to put on a uniform, was a new experience.

And, surprisingly…

He liked it.

When Ziva finally woke up and stretched, Jason was already in the kitchen, trying and failing to prepare a decent breakfast.

She stopped in the doorway, watching with an amused smile on her lips.

"Should I be worried about you handling high-precision weapons perfectly, but not being able to handle a frying pan?"

Jason glanced at her over his shoulder, one eyebrow raised.

"Hey, in my defense, making scrambled eggs wasn't exactly mandatory training in the Army."

Ziva approached, taking the spatula from his hand.

"Then, let me show you how it's done."

Jason leaned against the counter, arms crossed, watching her with an amused look.

"That's humiliating."

She chuckled softly.

"It's necessary."

As she prepared the eggs, Jason approached from behind, embracing her by the waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.

— So I'm learning to be a civilian… and you're teaching me to cook.

Ziva smiled slightly.

— I guess so.

Jason closed his eyes for a moment, just feeling her presence, the smell of coffee mixed with her perfume.

Life… was strangely good.

In the first few months, they both thought they would miss the adrenaline.

But what they discovered was something different.

They didn't miss the war.

They missed the routine, the purpose, the sense of mission.

But now, they were discovering a new purpose together.

Long walks in Central Park, nights watching bad movies just because they could, dinners in small restaurants that weren't marked on military intelligence maps.

Ziva noticed that Jason was starting to relax.

And Jason noticed that Ziva was starting to allow herself to enjoy life.

One night, they were on the sofa, wine on the table, a movie playing on TV. Ziva lay against Jason, her bare feet on the sofa.

"Do you think we're really ready for this?" she asked, without taking her eyes off the screen.

Jason ran his fingers through her hair.

"To live without having to look over your shoulder?"

She nodded slowly.

Jason thought for a moment.

"Yes. But I think it's because we finally have something worth protecting."

Ziva turned her head to look at him.

Her eyes were softer than he had ever seen them before.

"Us."

Jason smiled slightly.

"Us."

She leaned in and kissed him, a slow kiss full of silent promises.

And for the first time in their lives, neither of them felt they needed to be anywhere else.

They were exactly where they were meant to be.

Together.
