The screaming jolted her awake.
It took Ivy three seconds to realize the screams were coming from her own throat.
She sat up in the darkness, her body soaked in sweat, her heart hammering so hard she thought her ribs might crack. The small stone room tilted around her. Cold walls. No windows. Silver bars that burned instead of protected.
The breeding cells. She was back in the breeding cells.
But no. Her hand reached out and touched rough cloth instead of cold metal. A bed. She was on a bed in the temple. Safe. Breathing. Alive.
Her lungs didn't believe her.
The nightmare clung to her like spider webs. Derek's face when he rejected her. The way his golden eyes had turned cold. The way he'd said those words like she was poison. Like touching her would burn him alive.
