The transformation was explosive.
Bones cracked like snapping branches.
Muscles twisted and expanded as fur burst through skin.
Within seconds, Alpha Varkos stood before them in his wolf form.
Aria's breath caught.
He was enormous.
Larger than any wolf she had ever seen.
His fur was a dark iron gray, thick and bristling like armor. Scars crossed his massive shoulders and chest, proof of countless battles.
But it was his eyes that held everyone frozen.
Two burning pools of molten gold.
Power rolled off him like heat from a wildfire.
The wolves behind him immediately lowered their heads.
Submission.
Not forced.
Instinctive.
Marcus whispered under his breath,
"…that's not normal."
Rowan nodded slowly.
"No Alpha should be that big."
Even Kael's wolf inside him stirred uneasily.
But Kael didn't step back.
He stepped forward.
His voice dropped into a low growl.
"This is your warning."
Varkos's massive wolf looked at him.
Completely unimpressed.
Then his attention returned to Aria.
Aria's heart was pounding.
Her wolf was wide awake now.
Stand.
She straightened slightly.
The air between them grew thick with tension.
Varkos slowly began circling her.
One heavy step at a time.
Each movement deliberate.
Predatory.
Marcus muttered quietly,
"I really don't like this."
Lena whispered,
"He's testing her."
Rowan frowned.
"Testing how?"
Alder answered calmly.
"Dominance."
Cassian leaned against the tree again, smiling.
"Oh this is exactly what I hoped for."
Varkos stopped directly in front of Aria.
His enormous head lowered slightly.
Not submission.
Inspection.
His nose twitched as he inhaled her scent.
Aria didn't move.
Even though her instincts screamed at her to run.
Kael's fists clenched at his sides.
Marcus leaned closer to him.
"You jumping in?"
Kael shook his head slightly.
"Not yet."
Marcus blinked.
"Not yet?"
Kael's eyes stayed locked on Varkos.
"She asked for this moment."
Aria lifted her chin.
"You came to take me."
The giant wolf watched her.
His golden eyes glowing brighter.
"Then take me."
A low rumble vibrated in Varkos's chest.
The wolves behind him shifted nervously.
Even they seemed unsure.
Aria's wolf pushed harder.
Command.
She stepped forward.
Just one step.
But the effect was immediate.
Several wolves behind Varkos lowered themselves slightly again.
Submission.
The pressure in the clearing increased.
Like gravity had suddenly grown stronger.
Varkos noticed.
His massive tail flicked once.
Then—
He growled.
Not a normal growl.
It was deeper.
Stronger.
An Alpha command.
The wolves behind him instantly straightened again.
Marcus whispered,
"…okay that's terrifying."
Aria felt the force of it hit her chest.
Her wolf pushed back.
Without thinking—
She growled.
The sound shocked even her.
It wasn't loud.
But it carried something powerful.
Ancient.
The reaction was immediate.
Several wolves behind Varkos whimpered.
One even dropped fully to the ground.
Cassian's grin widened.
"Well now."
Varkos's golden eyes burned brighter.
For the first time—
He looked impressed.
He stepped closer.
Close enough that Aria could feel the heat of his breath.
Then—
He suddenly lunged.
Gasps erupted across the clearing.
But he didn't bite.
His massive paw slammed into the ground inches from her feet.
Cracking the dirt.
A dominance challenge.
Marcus swore loudly.
"Oh hell no—"
Kael's hand shot out, stopping him.
"Wait."
Marcus stared at him.
"She's about to get flattened!"
"Trust her."
Aria's heart hammered.
Her wolf roared inside her.
Stand.
She didn't move.
Didn't flinch.
Didn't step back.
Instead—
She stepped forward again.
Now she stood directly in front of the massive Alpha wolf.
Face to face.
The clearing was dead silent.
Even the wind had stopped.
Varkos stared at her.
Then he growled again.
This time louder.
Stronger.
The ground vibrated.
But Aria held her ground.
Her voice came out stronger than she expected.
"I'm not afraid of you."
The wolves behind him shifted again.
Confused.
Uncertain.
The pressure building between them was enormous now.
Varkos's eyes narrowed slightly.
Then—
He did something no one expected.
He lowered his head.
Not completely.
But slightly.
A test.
An invitation.
Rowan whispered,
"…what just happened?"
Alder's voice was quiet.
"He's acknowledging her strength."
Marcus blinked.
"So… that's good?"
Alder nodded.
"Yes."
But the moment didn't last long.
Varkos lifted his head again.
His golden eyes locked on Aria.
Then—
He shifted back.
Bones cracked as the massive wolf shrank and twisted into human form again.
Within seconds, the towering Alpha stood there again.
He studied Aria with a new expression now.
Respect.
Interest.
And something else.
Curiosity.
"You didn't run," he said.
Aria's voice was steady.
"I told you I wouldn't."
Varkos nodded slowly.
"Good."
The wolves behind him waited silently.
Their Alpha turned slightly, looking at his army.
Then back at Aria.
"You're not weak."
Aria crossed her arms.
"I know."
Marcus whispered,
"I like this version of her."
Rowan nodded.
"Same."
Varkos continued watching her.
Then he said something unexpected.
"You want my pack to follow you."
Aria nodded.
"Yes."
Varkos rubbed his jaw thoughtfully.
"That's an interesting idea."
Marcus blinked.
"Wait… is he actually considering it?"
Cassian chuckled softly.
"Oh he's considering something."
Aria's voice stayed firm.
"Well?"
Varkos looked at her again.
"You want to lead my wolves."
"Yes."
His golden eyes gleamed slightly.
"Then prove you deserve them."
Aria frowned.
"How?"
Varkos's smile returned.
A dangerous one.
"Defeat me."
The clearing exploded with reactions.
Marcus shouted,
"WHAT?!"
Rowan grabbed his head.
"You've got to be kidding."
Lena whispered,
"That's impossible."
Kael stepped forward instantly.
"Absolutely not."
But Varkos ignored them all.
His golden eyes never left Aria.
"You wanted to lead."
Aria's heart pounded violently.
"I did."
Varkos nodded slowly.
"Then show me you're strong enough."
Silence spread again.
Then Varkos said the words that made Aria's stomach drop.
"Fight me."
And behind him—
Two hundred wolves began to howl. 🐺
