Guilt prickled at my skin.
They had been my anchors in the human world. The only people who had stood by me when I arrived in the city alone, heavily pregnant, and stubbornly determined to survive. They didn't know everything. They only knew I had come from complicated family circumstances. They knew I had refused to speak of the father of my children.
They had never pressed, and that alone had been relieving.
Carefully, I began typing. Apologies first, reassurances second.
I'm safe. The children are safe. I had to return to my family for a while. It's complicated, but we're okay.
The three dots appeared almost instantly.
